Just like the dead star it was named after.

It seems like Patagonia's Black Hole 32L Backpack has a limitless capacity for all the hiking gear you need on day-long trails. Inspired by Patagonia's alpine packs, the Black Hole features a light-yet-strong ripstop shell laminated in TPU and finished with DWR for extreme protection from rugged environments. Heavy-duty molded padding gives the shoulder straps and back panel a comfy ride, and there's a webbing waist belt for additional stability on tough trails. A unique double zipper lets you access the main compartment through the top flap or at the side. The hydration sleeve has a port for your reservoir's tube, and the sleeve doubles as a laptop sleeve on urban adventures.

    Portland-proof and rain ready!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this bag for a teenager and wasn't sure they would like it. Fortunately, this bag is one of the most universally loved backpacks that I've ever seen. This navy and paintbrush red color way is awesome, it's more fun than a plain black bag and the navy is dark enough to hide any residue. It handled a weekend trip to a foggy city like a champ. My daughter carries this with her while she commutes via city bus, Max train and longboard. I'm hopeful that it will hold up to the rains of the PNW this winter, but only time will tell.

    Fired Up...

My step daughters home burned down July 2nd, and she lost most of her gear and clothing. I purchased this for her (along with much more) to help her get geared back up for a month long trip to Europe. She loves it as much as this time around!

      love this pack.

Use it as an everyday carry, awesome padded pocket for the laptop and notebook. Water resistant when I get caught in the rain on the bike. Great addition to my black hole duffel for traveling. a ton of room for camera gear, extra clothes, whatever else you need for the day.

        Great Pack!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I got this pack primarily for use as a commuter backpack with the occasional travel use. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed this, there are tons on pockets inside for your phone, wallet, laptop, even a water bottle (inside), you name it. It is super comfortable on the shoulders, and the back panel is sturdy and soft. I love the material that Patagonia uses for their Black Hole series of bags, it is super durable, pretty much waterproof (with the exception of the zippers), and comes in some really cool colors. You can use this pack for many different uses since it comes with one giant compartment that can be adjusted using the fold top, it also has a hydration reservoir slot. The front pocket allows for smaller items and a daisy chain down the front lets you clip whatever you'd like to the front. I love this backpack, and would recommend this one or the slightly smaller one to anyone looking for a commuter bag that is very multi-functional.

        Fill it up!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used this pack for traveling, bike commuting , riding trains, and schooling. The amount it holds is amazing! I primarily got it after my other backpack did not protect my laptop in a few downpours. This has been put to the test in rain and done great. So far, I have stuffed it with a pair of shoes, extra clothes, 15" laptop, 2 books, a notebook, pens, wallet, sandwich, and 40oz hydroflask. Love it! Get one!

        Great Commuter Pack

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Got this for my brother for hid bday and he loves it. Carries his 15" laptop nicely so his hands are free to dual-wield strawberry frappucinos.

        Dig it!

I really like this pack. It has lots of pockets, seems quite durable and is plenty water resistant. Its comfortable even was a decent load in it and makes a great hiking or school pack.

          My issues:
Weld the seams! The pack is water resistant and not water proof. I have used it in downpours and my stuff has gotten wet. It still is quite water resistant and the only time my stuff got wet it was a tropical storm :P

Put a small zipper pocket in the top lid. The fold over lid is a bit odd but is quite practical once you figure out how to use it. If it had a pocket to prevent things from falling into the main compartment that'd be $$$.

          Overall, Love it, 5 stars!

          Great for daily use

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this bag! I use it all the time. It's my day to day school bag, travel bag, hiking bag, etc. It's great for any occasion and keeps your belongings dry in the worst of weather

          So many pockets!

I love this backpack! It has huge pockets so you can always fit one more thing, which is important in a pack. I also like the waterproof material. I also have a matching duffel and messenger bag so I was obviously sold. Patagonia does it again!

            Great Climbing Pack

This is my go to pack for all of my climbing gear. It is burly, durable, and also looks great. Love the top loading and am always amazed at how much I can fit inside this thing. It is versatile enough to fit climbing shoes, harness , chalk bag, snacks and layers to just fitting a couple extra outfits for a weekend adventure.

              Great pack

This is the second Black Hole 32l pack that I have owned. Overall this is a great pack and is a great upgrade over the first gen pack. You have plenty of space if you bike commute to work or need to throw some clothes in your pack for an overnight stay. Inside there is organizer that can stash pens, keys, and a Passport or wallet. The full zip on the side is a nice feature if you have stuff crammed at the bottom of the pack and don't want to search for it. The only feature that I am 50/50 on is the two buckles to close the lid. They can be a little annoying when you are in a rush, but help to close and secure the lid. Overall this is one of the better 32l packs on the market.

                Another Win for Patagonia!

                • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This backpack has worked great! I've used it for simple day to day use, hiking, and traveling. I love it's versatility. It's super comfortable to wear, even when it is loaded up. The side zipper makes it incredibly easy to access your gear quickly and efficiently when you don't want to have to undue the top. I do wish it had a side zipper on both sides, but that is just nit picking. I got caught in a hail/rain downpour and the material of the bag held up perfectly and all my gear stayed dry! I'll be using this bag for a looooong time. My go to bag for sure.

This simple waterproof backpack is amazing! Being a college student walking around campus in the pissing rain is a struggle. Having this backpack has saved my laptop and my grades. This back also rocks for hikes and day activities. Would recommend.

                  Engulfed everything!

                  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This thing will hold pretty much anything besides a seven piece mariachi band. It easily held everything from my previous day pack and then some. I love the overall design of this bag. It's completely modern and stylish. It's at home pretty much anywhere. In the mountains, at school, on the train, on da' plane. If I had to make any changes I would love for it to have a water bottle carrier on the side. Besides that it has pretty much all the other bells and whistles. Great product and Backcountry was as easy to deal with as ever. Goat worthy!

Best Backpack I Have Ever Owned

                  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this backpack because it acts as a small suitcase. When you lay the pack down it zips almost completely open so you are able to lay it out like a suitcase. I can fit so many things in here. Currently using this pack as my day to day backpack from going to work to then going to school. It gives me more than enough room to fit my books and lunch and any miscellaneous items. Cant wait to use it as a travel bag!

awesome update to an old favorite

                  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The original Black Hole 35L pack was one of my favorites, and this is a killer update. The old pack was great, but not the best for wet weather commutes even though the fabric was waterproof. The fold over top of the new pack does a great job to remedy this, and I've had it out in the rain on my bike with my laptop and iPad inside with no problems at all. It's a few liters smaller than the old pack, but if you need to the fold over flap can be overstuffed, and you can easily get that 3 liters back. Two thumbs up all around for this guy.

                  Unanswered Question

Will a 15.6 " laptop fit in the laptop sleeve for this model?

Does anybody know if the laptop sleeve is big enough to hold a 17" laptop since the size dropped from 35l to 32l for this years model?
