Defective product

Familiarity:
I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

My husband bought me a pair of these. When i went to charge them they would not charge. My husband opened up the unit and found wires not connected and the battery was not glued down inside. It had a 3M adhesive that no one bothered to use to hold battery in place. I called the company and sent them back right away, within 5 days of purchasing them. I wanted the company to know that they might have a defective lot of ear discs. Every time i get in touch with them it seems they cannot find my return. This is an expensive product and it was defective. If they were a decent company i would have had my new unit already. I agree with the one review that was posted, the wires inside were not connected and we found out by opening it..we did have to pry it open too.. I will have to look for another brand if Outdoor Tech does not come through. This was a Valentines gift too so it hurts even more..

Not worth the money

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I don't normally write bad reviews. I buy a lot of tech gear and sometimes it's great, but often times I'm underwhelmed, but I usually keep my opinions to myself. In this case, I feel compelled to write a negative review because I tried to get the company to address the issues, but they hid behind their limited warranty period. They replaced the product under warranty originally, but the replacement still had the same problem of audio cutting out sometimes when I turned my head/helmet one way or the other. It seems like either an interference issue or perhaps there are wires inside that maybe didn't get soldered very well? It's hard to tell, because it's a wireless product. They refused to warranty the replacements because by the time they were available again to send to me the original warranty period had expired! They offered a 30% discount off another product, but I wasn't about to waste more money with them if they wouldn't stand behind their overpriced product. I loved the concept of these Chips because they are about as close to Apple Airpods Pro as you can get in a ski helmet, from a tactical perspective with the charging case. The sound quality is good when they're not cutting out. The phone audio only works in the RIGHT ear and I think my hearing is better in my left ear so that is a real issue for me. I've tried switching them to the other side, but then I keep mixing up the controls. Others have reviewed these and I'm acknowledging the same issue with summoning Siri: It requires a "long press" but if you press too long then you have just shut off the headphones and game over when you were trying to SAVE time by using Siri. A double press of one side would be the best way to summon Siri or they should work with the "Hey Siri" functionality like other Apple headphones, but maybe Apple only allows that for their own products, which would be a shame. I only ski with music once in a while because I am a volunteer ski patroller and I need to be able to hear my patrol radio. I primarily use these for phone calls, but because the audio only works in one ear and my hearing doesn't seem as good on my right side, these are pretty poor. Also, the auto-off functionality means that they turn off automatically after just a few minutes if I'm not listening to music. That's just dumb, it should be configurable to extend the time out from five minutes to one hour or more or be able to disable the auto-off function completely. I get that this is intended to save battery life, but it makes them pretty useless to me, especially at this price point. I posted a similar review on OT's website, but they clearly suppressed it as it's not showing there. I hope this review helps others from wasting their money. I'm still searching for a better product (fully wireless helmet audio) with the charging case. I wish Apple would make something like this that could be dropped into a ski helmet or have the headphone. An induction charging case would be great too (a la Airpods).

Auto-Off makes them almost useless

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Unless playing music or an audiobook, these will shut themselves off after ~5 minutes. Half of the time, they will only reconnect for calls and not media playback. Depending on the app, they may not reconnect to play music at all unless you restart the app. If you get frustrated and don?t turn them back on right away and a call comes in a little later, it will not reconnect fast enough to get the call. I find myself having to take my phone out of my coat more than when I was using wired headphones 10 years ago. ODT would not accept a return and does not seem to have a plan to fix this. Their only solution was to keep playing music all the time and ignore your group on the lines and lifts. The controls have improved from the 2.0.

Half-baked Product

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I don?t like to write negative reviews, but this product is deserving. I was looking to upgrade from my existing Chips 2.0 as I liked the fully wireless feature. Unfortunately, the implementation on the Ultra?s is lacking. I found the pairing a bit problematic, but the bigger issue was the ability to make an outgoing call. In order to access Siri, you have to press the right speaker button for what?s called a long press. A short press restarts you music. The problem I experienced was the Ultra?s had trouble distinguishing between a short press and a long press. I just couldn?t get it to work reliably. The other issue I discovered was the long delay in getting a response back from Siri, sometimes 15 seconds or more. My Chips 2.0 are rock-solid with Siri queries. In addition, phone calls can only be heard on the right speaker. Really? I would recommend you hold off on making this purchase until Outdoor Technology gets their act together and improves upon the features of the Ultra product. I sent mine back and will continue to use my reliable Chips 2.0 until something better comes along.

Great option for ski helmet audio...

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I have had all the previous version of the Chips to date, and believe this is the best iteration yet. However, as mentioned before, they do come with their own "quirks". If you pause your music when getting on the chairlift, and do not start it again, these will shut off before you reach the top. Not a deal killer by any means, but it would force you to turn each one back on individually and allow them to re-pair. It also takes some adjustment having to turn each one one and off - but that goes away after first use. I do like that it is easier to activate voice assistant with this version. Through a bit of experimentation, I uncovered that the sound is best when you actually leave the foam inside your helmet ear pads. Several manufacturers provide a "donut" shaped cut-out that can be removed. This does allow for the Chips to fit in nicely, but causes the sound to seem very weak in bass - leaving the foam greatly improves the sound. Biggest lesson learned = turn down the volume all the way rather than pause when getting on the lift. Battery life is very impressive.
