    Understated and Functional.

As much as you love your dog, you aren't super keen on twinning with Fido on a wet, rainy day, so the next time you head out for a rainy walk, zip up the Outdoor Research Women's Valley Jacket. The Valley Jacket features a waterproof and windproof fabric that's also breathable, so not only are you protected from the rain and elements, but you won't become a sweaty hot mess. Additionally, the Valley Jacket features a hint of stretch for unimpeded mobility, which is awfully convenient when Fido decides to take off in search of smellier pastures clear across the dog park. Zippered ventilation runs from the bottom hem to the bicep, allowing you to dump excess body heat quickly and efficiently. Fully taped seams bolster your defense against moisture, while the packable, wire-brimmed hood offers ample protection, without getting in the way of a backpack, purse, or pony tail.

I will start by saying that I have been on a saga for buying the right rain jacket without spending too much money. I live in a dry climate but will be working for the summer in a subtropical zone. I wanted to find a jacket that would be lightweight and compact for sporadic rains at home in the high desert, but would be waterproof and breathable enough to hold up to the hotter and more wet conditons of my summer work site. After trying a couple of jackets from other brands, I was disappointed. The first was a thin laminate shell that was light and waterproof, but felt like a greenhouse inside. The second was Gore-tex and was more breathable and still very waterproof, but was heavy and crunchy feeling. I decided to take a look at Outdoor Research products, as I know the brand has a great reputation. After much research I found the Interstellar, which was the ideal jacket for my situation, but a little more than I could justify spending. I kept looking around and came across the Valley Jacket. From the review I read it seemed like a good compromise. It may not be ultra breathable like the Interstellar, but for the savings I thought I would give it a try, and I'm glad I did! The jacket is super light, and has a very soft feel in comparison to many rain shells. I wore it in the rain for the first time today, and the surface repelled water as well as any other rain shell I have used, and it felt really breathable. I am curious to see how it performs during field work this summer! My only complaint is that the jacket runs a bit wide. I tend to like things to be a slimmer fit, but that is not a huge concern for me with rain jackets - function is the priority! I got the Oasis color, and it is brighter than it looks on the website, which works for me! I am very satisfied to find such a great shell at an affordable price.

Finally, jacket I've been looking for!

I have looked off/on for a new rain jacket for a year. Was nervous about another jacket that promises to be breathable (last one was older, so it always left me feeling sticky and damp when it rained in summer). This one is soft (not crunchy and loud!), very breathable, the right length, has pit zips and elastic AND velcro cuffs, soft material around the collar, and I loved the fact that it does have a "collar" instead of just running straight from zipper up to hood. The *only* thing I don't quite love is the placement of the adjustable drawstring thing on the center back of the hood. I decided to get over it since I will almost never be wearing the hood and leaning my head against a seat in a car, for instance. Otherwise, it would be lumpy and hard. Worn it in the rain the past two days, and never felt like I was going to start sweating in it! Also - I tried the Aspire by OR as well, and found it to be heavier, stinky (rubbery smell), less breathable, and not as slim cut as this one.
