    Skin to ski.

Transitioning from skinning to skiing is generally the coldest part of days spent in the backcountry, but the Outdoor Research Women's Transition Hooded Fleece Jacket certainly quickens each transition. Developed for skinning, the Transition features a Polartec Power Grid fleece that excels moisture management and quick-drying comfort, and there are lighter, stretchier panels at the waist and underarms to ensure mobility and breathability. This light fleece also features a snug fit for easier layering, and the balaclava hood fits under helmets with ease.

    Wardrobe Staple--Love It

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: S pewter/charcoal color
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 115lbs

Purchased this hoodie last spring in my usual size S in the pewter/charcoal color. While form-fitting on my 5'3", 110 lb. frame, it doesn't feel tight or constrictive when zipped up. I have worn and taken this hoodie EVERYWHERE. Have put down vest over it, worn it over nice tees/tanks in air-conditioned restaurants, and used for walking/hiking on chilly spring and now fall days. The pewter color goes with pretty much everything, and this hoodie is one of the first things I grab for trips. Pricey, but all-around versatile wardrobe investment. Agree with another reviewer that zips on pockets would be good add-on. I wash mine in warm water and hang to dry. Has held up well with lots of wear, and has been a great year-around hoodie.

    My Go-to

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This is my favorite piece for ski touring. It's lightweight, has a great. flattering fit and I love how it's longer in the back so it doesn't ride up under your pack. My one criticism, and the reason I only gave this piece four stars, is because the hand pockets don't have zippers! What?! I really don't understand that design decision, and would buy at least two more of these if they started doing zip pockets. I don't want to lose my inclinometer, snacks, or chapstick in the backcountry. If the lack of zippered pockets doesn't bother you, then I'd say stock up on the Transition hoody because it's the best fleece out there otherwise.

    Highly Impressed

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 135lbs

This jacket is crazy effective for both warmth and breathability. Oh, and comfort too!

For how light it is, it's super warm. When you think you need a heavy fleece, you don't, you just need this piece. And on top of that, if breathes extremely well, because of the smart fleece-mapping.

This is my trusty pick for everything!!! Skiing, touring, mountain biking, climbing, cold-weather running and hiking. I do wish they made it will a hoodless option, because I would get that one as well.

The durability is on point. Mine still looks new, without any pilling, after two years of use.

The sizing is true. This is form-fitting, which is how it's supposed to fit. This is not a layering piece. You aren't going to put a sweater under this, you want it to be your sweater. So, go with your normal size. I'm 5'8, 135 lbs and the medium is just right.

    Must have for hiking!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I wore this jacket for 3 days straight hiking the Grand Canyon from North Rim to South Rim and it functioned perfectly.

Temps were ranging from about 40 degrees - 60 degrees which is a little warm for this jacket, but because of the breath-a-bility it worked perfectly. It also warmed me up quickly after dunking in Ribbon Falls early in the morning. Throughout most of the hike I was in shade and would've been cold, but thanks to my transition jacket I was perfectly content.

It did show light signs of wear on the back from my backpack, so I might recommend wearing this hiking or climbing wear the pack won't be rubbing up and down constantly on your back.

On sizing, the small fit perfect and is my true size, however I would probably size up to a medium on my next one as it will fit a little bit more comfortable if I had on a long sleeve t. It will definitely layer under a shell great as it clings to your bod and is well tailored. I love that the design of the Polar Tec Power grid, where it keeps your front nice and warm, then is lighter on your back panel to help expel extra heat.

Definitely a must have mid/base layer jacket.

    Must have for hiking!

    Take that, R1!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

What’s better than a Patagonia R1? The OR Transition hoody! It’s a grid fleece just like the standard R1, but the perfect weight and cut (Patagonia has been more recently making their lines more roomy/baggy/bulky at the waist—unnecessarily so). This thing is so snuggly, and it’s not too warm to wear while doing lots of cardio-related activities. I wore it on The Nose of El Capitan, S facing and direct sun. It blocked the sun, helped cut a bit of the wind, and allowed me to jug and haul 31 pitches without getting sweaty. And the Transition was there for me when I needed a bit of warmth too! I can’t wait to take this piece ski touring this winter! Size note: if you have broad shoulders, you might want to size up one size.

Linds - you are ahead of me on this one! I have one coming and can't wait to use it! The key benefits of this piece are: 1) durability, 2) efficient thermal quality, 3) wicking, 4) packable, 5)anti stink!

it's WAY beyond a fleece!! Enjoy!
