This thing saved my life! I took it on a week long backpacking trip in the Great Smoky mountains this past January. Happened to be the coldest week of the winter with night time temps reaching -5 f and day time highs in the single digits. When I stopped for munchies and to catch my breath I instantly threw this on and my head stayed toasty warm. It’s like a sleeping bag for your dome. Btw, I never saw myself in it so I can’t speak to how it looks. Who cares???

Really dig this hat if I was using it for say…winter camping. I think people who are looking for a hat for the coldest of cold days are really gonna dig it. I don’t. It looks pretty funny. I thought it would hug my head a little closer and round out a bit. It doesn’t and I feel like I should be in a Devo video. It’s toatally warm and, like all OR products it’s very well constructed. A real winner in a tent or something else static. A little too warm for aerobic activities. It also really interferes with hearing, (muffles sounds), which again is great…in a tent and sleeping bag. Call me vain but for an everyday hat, it looks funny.

The concept is great, the fit is just not good - I got the largest size and the elastic band is too sharp around the ears.

I don't have a large head (a swelled head perhaps, but that a different story!) - however I couldn't get the beanie to fit comfortably. I had tried the small/medium and that definitely didn't fit, so I gave it to a friend and ordered the Large/XLarge, but compared to other beanies I've worn which were wool - so heavier and maybe conforms better to the shape of my head - the down beanie, despite being super light and super warm, just didn't warm its way into my heart...

Does it resemble cupcake frosting? Maybe a bit, and that's only one reason why I love this adorable down beanie! It's light, packable, warm and unique. I wear it everywhere. Its so light and comfortable that I often forget it's on my head.

This beanie is straight up awesome. I was very skeptical, but it ridiculously warm and comfortable. Weave of the fabric is tight enough that it actually muffles outdoor noise quite a bit. Compacts down like your favorite down jacket, so its good to go on your head, or in your pocket. Sorry Merino beanies, there's a new king in town.

I bought a L/XL based off of the size chart. Unfortunately it's ginormous. The fabric all bunches in the back leaving a layer effect. It almost resembles a turbin, thats how much fabric im talking here. I wrote OR and am awaiting response. Hat is warm enough and will be taking on backwoods outing in a few days.

Never short on warmth

I bought this product for my wife since she is naturally cold blooded. It is now her favorite dog walking hat for 0 - 30 degree weather. She also brings it on all back country expeditions for guaranteed warmth when ever she needs it.

i love my down beanie its very warm and it packs down so small ! i got a big nugget so i had to get a lg xlg and it fits well i have a 7 3/8 in head

Thank you for your review. Id like to ask this question: Is this beanie only sit above the ears or does it easily and comfortably pull fully over the ears and lobes if desired? Its hard to tell from the photos. Photos on the OR website make the beanie look small and some of the photos on the Backcountry website make the beanies look small. Thanks for any help you can lend on this.

Great for winter base camp

I got this just to keep my head warm when stopping on the winter trail for a break and of around base camp on climbs. Well worth the money! Incredibly warm of course and very soft. Not as breathable as I would like, but you can't have everything you want.

All depends on the size of your head. I've found a lot of OR hats are unisex. just the colors really that change.

My head is 21.5 inches/54.61cm. The size says S/M 55-57cm Medium 57cm Large 59cm L/XL 59-61cm XL 61cm Pulled all the way down It (S/M) does not cover the bottoms of my ears. Would the L/XL be too big?

The L/XL should work well for you, I enjoy wearing mine over the top of another fabric beanie that i normally wear. Seems to be more comfortable that way and stays put.

Thanks Neil ! The elastic stiching was streched to the max when I wore the S/M. No way to wear it over any kind of hat. I will return it for a L/XL It's a great product and I am looking forward to getting the L/XL.
