Skyward II Pant

If you're one of those people who think there's no such thing as waterproof and breathable, it's time to reconsider. The Outdoor Research Men's Skyward II Pant is proof that you can have your cake and eat it too, and it even tastes good. When it's your turn to set the skinner and your body temperature is spiking, a combination of the AscentShell 3L fabric and the large outer thigh vents let all that heat escape so you can plug on without having to spend the rest of the tour in your sweaty baselayers. The fabric also works to keep wind and moisture from the outside from permeating, while the gaiters seal out any chance of snow getting where it doesn't belong.

The cherry on top (of your cake) are the thoughtful details Outdoor Research incorporated into the Skyward II. Stretchy face fabric and well-articulated knees support full range of motion whether you're booting up a couloir or laying down some GS-worthy turns, and a specially designated avalanche beacon pocket provides easy beacon access. In case your crampons or ski edges decide to go rogue, 420D scuff guards protect your pants from tears so you can spend less time sewing and more time on the snow.

  • Breathable pants that keep you dry and comfortable on the ups
  • Waterproof, breathable, wind-resistant fabric for all-day comfort
  • Articulated knees and stretch face fabric promote range of motion
  • Stretch gaiters keep snow out, even when it’s chest deep
  • Designated avalanche beacon pocket for easy beacon access
  • Reinforced scuff guards keep pants safe from crampons and ski edges
  • Item #ODR00RF

Great pants, zipper issues

Overall, these are great pants. I tried the various pants of this style at the backcountry store and landed on this one, which is between the super flexible pant and bombproof inflexible version. I’ve used them for skiing, backcountry/skinning, and ice climbing. They’re great for each of those applications in terms of flexibility and protection. Pockets and vents well placed. A problem is the zippers catch often. Especially the standard pant pockets. I swapped out one, and experience the same on the replacement. It’s a pain when wearing gloves and you need something.

If you are like me and heat up way to easily, these are the pants for you. Once I get moving, I get way too hot even on cold days. These pants solve that problem for me. They breathe very well and regulate my heat. There are vents on each leg for the super warm tours. There are scuff guards to protect them from ripping from crampons or other sharp objects. They block wind well and are very water resistant. I have used these pants over 50 days this winter split boarding, snowboarding in a resort, snowmobiling, and snow shoeing. These pants have stayed dry even in the longest resort days. On the colder days, I wear an Icebreaker base layer under the pants. I love the stretchiness in these pants allowing full range of motion on the uphill touring or hiking in snowshoes. The pockets are very waterproof keeping all of my essentials dry. There is a pocket that you can stash a backcountry map and your beacon in as well. There are adjustable straps on the hips to get that perfect fit. I am 6'0 175 and a size large fits me great. I don't see myself ever using a different pant for my winter activities. I am hooked and you will be also if you try these pants.

Great shell

I tried a variety of this cut on in the warehouse and landed here. Flexible enough to climb in, but sturdy enough for the cold. They make this exact cut in a thinner and thicker material, depending on your preference. The thinner felt more like hiking pants to me and thicker are bulletproof (but can’t bend your knee past the hip). Pockets are well placed and vent comes in handy. First ones had a defective zipper and I had to exchange.

Great pants

Bought these for both ski and climbing. There are multiple variations of this pant in terms of thickness and breathability, and these are in the middle on both. Pocket placement is great and there’s a venting option for the pant, which is great on a climb. I haven’t abused them much yet, but they feel sturdy. Pair great with a light base layer for most skiing scenarios. Note - I had to exchange my first pair for a faulty zipper...no big deal.

Thank you for the review! Enjoy these! For climbing, the bottoms may be a little wide, so maybe add a gaiter to help secure and protect... Leta OR Rep

I'm a rookie- and as such, still learning about what makes a great pant. these were really comfy around the waist- which for me is a big deal. I typically use the bibs, but I was totally into these.

100% agree. The Skyward is my "go to" kit! Thank you for the review! Leta OR Rep

I wore these a couple times on a couple different resorts, and they performed super well. They are very breathable, so if you're riding on a colder day, you're definitely going to want some baselayers on underneath. On a warmer spring day though, these are going to be perfect! They're nice and stretchy, waterproof, and the style is spot on!

These great for cruising the resort on warm or cold days. Burly gaiter material will clearly withstand years of use. Plenty of pockets give you options for storing items. They are a little heavy and warm but the thigh vents help you dump heat and are easy to zip up before descending.

Hey Nicholas, Thank you for this review. The Skyward on the women's side is my go-to ski pant. Leta OR Rep

Regulate Heat, Regulate Snow

Although the pants I tried on were too long (Medium was too big for 5'7"), I found them to have great mobility and to be very durable even when I put them through its paces snowboarding and snowshoeing. The inner scuff guards worked well, and the thigh vents were extremely effective for regulating body heat. It has a bit of a fleece lining to keep your warm when you need it too. The avalanche beacon pocket is a nice touch if you're going to the backcountry.

Thank you so much, Ryan! Leta OR Rep
