Skyward II Jacket
You're halfway up the skin track and you're completely soaked, but it's not raining or snowing. It's sweat. With the Outdoor Research Men's Skyward II Jacket you'll stay dry from your baselayer out, even when you're the one setting the skinner. The AscentShell 3L membrane is completely waterproof, wind-resistant, incredibly breathable, but also maintains a comfortable stretch so you can pole plant freely.
The Skyward II is a winner simply because of the shell, but Outdoor Research also added a laundry list of thoughtful features to optimize the jacket's performance in the backcountry. Large hem-to-bicep vents let you easily cool down without shedding layers, and front pockets are strategically placed out of the way of a harness or backpack waist belt, allowing easy snack access. When you're getting ready to rappel into a couloir, or need to quickly access your beacon, the jacket's double zipper lets you do so with ease.

I used this jacket a handfull of times snowboarding in the Wasatch range frontcountry resorts out of Salt Lake this year and it was great! The ultra-breathable membrane kept me dry all day, even when I over layered and had to hike out. Ventilation options are many and easily usable with mittens or gloves on. I had enough room to layer underneath and still maintain comfortable movement. If you are looking for a waterproof yet highly breathable/ventable jacket, this is the ticket to ride!

All around a sweet jacket. Was able to take it out skiing a few times this season and it performed wonderfully each time. The long zipper pulls made it easy to remove (or open pit zips) with mittens on. It remained breathable but kept me dry all day, and even though it isn't huge, it allowed for lots of movement! Would recommend!

The rumors are true, OR's Ascentshell delivers on protection and breathability in a super mobile package, basically a hybrid shell erasing the hard / soft shell boundary. Looking for a jacket to hold up to resort use but lightweight and breathable for BC use. Rocked this guy on two recent 30" plus storms (resort) here in the Wasatch, with the snow a tad heavier / wetter than normal. During white-out conditions and many powder naps the Skyward shed everything - the protection is there. Digging out from said naps the jacket didn't turn into a sauna, and I clearly found myself using the pit vents less than normal. The breathability is there, not to mention these hem to bicep zippers I feel confident heat management wouldn't be an issue even while touring. Great fit plus evident quality in construction and materials. If you are in and out of bounds consider the Skyward for a single jacket to do both.

This is a great softshell jacket! It's wind resistant, waterproof, and stretchy! I can comfortably move around and shift my body wherever it needs to go. I've taken this thing snowboarding many times, and it has yet to fail me! It's a pretty minimalist jacket, so I don't feel weird wearing this around town on an extra rainy day.
