The Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero is a burly full-coverage hat designed for extremely wet climates. In Seattle, there are two types of weather. It's either raining, or it's about to start raining. The Seattle Sombrero's waterproof breathable Taslan Gore-Tex to keep the downpour from soaking your head. Its soft brushed-tricot lining wicks moisture, and the chin strap is removable. The foam-stiffened brim on this Outdoor Research hat offers full protection from rain or sun, directing water away from your head when it's really coming down. And if things get really wet--like, you fall into the river you're raftingthe sombrero's foam brim floats. Maybe better than your boat.
- Protective hat is must when hiking in wet, rainy climates
- Gore-Tex construction delivers waterproof, breathable protection
- Durable nylon face fabric withstands wear from the trail
- Item #ODR0086

Waterproof, but hot
This hat has a wide brim and should be very waterproof with Goretex, but I hike often in hot weather and it has no ventilation. I will look for something else that has some mesh and will not be so hot in Sunny Colorado.

Good hat & does what I ask.
I use this at the park whenever it is pouring rain when I run my Border Collie (Which is several times a day...If you have one, you know what I'm talking about). It does rain frequently here in the Pacific NW. I have long hair which I can roll-up & band & fit into the top comfortably & not look obvious or silly. This isn't achievable with many hats! I have gone through a lot & this is a real treat to wear. Also , the chin strap is good at keeping it on when it is windy... but if it is really blowing, it hat gone sideways.... but it was really ripping. My wife always says,"Hi Ranger!" when I'm wearing it & my kids think I look ridiculous , but it's just for the dog. It only has to keep my glasses dry, give me great unobstructed field of view ( my dog Tux is a real trouble maker so I'm always on guard! ) and keep my hair contained. This is one of only two that I have bought after going through many that I still like. Will buy again when this gets lost or worn out.

The coolest hat ever!
I love this hat! perfect for blocking the sun, keeps the rain off, and is also lined so your head stays nice and warm! Probably not the best hat for the summer, but cold Oregon or Alaska rain--perfect!

BEST RAIN HAT, BAR NONE!
LISTEN UP, I'VE OWNED THIS HAT FOR 8 -YEARS NOW AND IT'S NEVER FAILED ME IN THE HEAVIEST OF DOWNPOURS. THIS IS A "RAIN" HAT, NOT A FICTITIOUS, FAKE, WATER-LEAKING PIECE OF JUNK. MY SOMBRERO RAIN HAT IS STILL IN "NEW-LIKE" CONDITION, THAT'S WHY I AM GOING TO ORDER ANOTHER ONE, JUST TO HAVE IT ON HAND! NOTE: NO MATTER WHAT SIZE YOU ORDER, THESE HATS HAVE AN ADJUSTABLE VELCRO HEAD-BAND FOR TWEAKING YOUR FIT. I WEAR A 7 1/4, I ORDER THE LARGE AND JUST TWEAK IT A TAD AND IT'S PERFECT, AND I MEAN PERFECT. IN SUM, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON ANY OTHER BRAND IF YOU'RE SEEKING THE BEST RAIN HAT -- YOU JUST FOUND IT, YOU'LL LOVE IT, NOW ORDER ONE. YOU'RE WELCOME!

You win! Best review! I LOVE the all caps... I can HEAR you!! So glad you love the Sombrero. We at OR call it a "pinnacle product." It is so core to who we are and the quality of our brand. Thank you so much for the killer review. :-) Leta OR Rep

Perfect for Seattle weather
Bought this for a trip to Seattle over Thanksgiving holiday. No problem in the rain. My husband bought one long ago and recommended me to get this hat because it worked the best for him. I got a large based on their measurement. Fits perfectly. Don't think twice about it.

Great fit for my melon!
I wear a size 8 baseball hat, so finding a hat isn't always that easy, but the XL size of the OR Seattle Sombrero Hat fits perfect. It's a good looking hat that protects me from the elements when I'm hiking.

Really??? This thing suxs!
Way overpriced for such a poorly made hat. Of course, it is made in CHINA!
December 3, 2015
very light weight
very comfortable, like the adjustable size, does a good job of keeping the rain off. I like the being able to stuff it in my coat pocket when I don't need it and pull it out when the weather turns.

Great hat for the pacific northwet.
Waterproof and a nice wide brim all around to keep the rain off without blocking the sound like hoods do.

Not as nice as the Nimbus it replaced.
I used to have an OR Nimbus Sombrero for many years. I recently lost it and had to replace it. I researched many hats and tried on many of the OR hats and this Seattle Sombrero is the closest thing to my old Nimbus. First off, for cold, rainy, Seattle days...this hat is probably perfect. For me it will be more of a 3 season hat (Spring, Summer, Fall) and it seems a little overbuilt and hot for summer use. I used to use the Nimbus for kayaking and my head rarely got hot. Kept the rain off and the sun off. But, there are two things that make me worry about the Seattle version - 1) it has velcro on the sides instead of snaps. So, if you don't look in the mirror when you put the sides up they are often mismatched or crooked. The Nimbus had snaps so you only had one way to put the sides up and it was always perfect. 2) The entire inner hat is lined. That and Gortex not being nearly as breathable as the folks at Gore would like you to think, it seems like it'll be a sweaty hat to wear on a summer day. No ventilation options at all. But, it was the closest thing to my old Nimbus so I bought it. Seems very well constructed and I have not doubt it is waterproof. Regarding sizing, I measured my head and the chart says I'm a solid Large. The large is very big on me. I have to tighten the inside strap all the way to make the hat comfortably snug. Plus it looks pretty baggy up top (lots of extra room). I ordered a M and found that was too snug, but the brim and top were just the right size. So, I stuck with the large. I'm feeling this is the best hat I've found but maybe not the best for me. Or maybe I just miss my Nimbus. You know how it is when you lose an old trusted piece of gear and have trouble finding it's equal...

Hey there - the Seattle Sombrero has been in the line for decades, and I think the Nimbus was a lighter version of the Seattle Sombrero. The SeaSom is indeed lined, but you can try the Halo Sombrero. I think that will be the right replacement for what you liked in the Nimbus. Good Luck! Leta OR Rep

Absolutely love it
The Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero is the bomb (to borrow a term from 1995). The fit was perfect (I bought an XL for my big head) and it's not hot and heavy. I love the versatility of it - I wear it hiking, but to do yard work, as well. Super happy with this purchase!

fits well & adjustable. Brim up for fair weather hiking & down for rainy hiking. Best for Fall & spring.

Hey Peter - this is an OR staple. It's what we call a "Pinnacle" product. Many try to copy it, which is a complement, but there really is only one Seattle Sombrero! Thanks fr taking the time to write! Leta OR Rep

Great for wet weather!
This hat is perfect for keeping rain off of your head and its great at directing the moisture away from your face. It can also shield you pretty well from the sun, but if you use it in too warm of conditions it can feel a bit muggy. I suppose this is due to the Goretex membrane that has to reach a certain level of humidity before it allows vapor to escape.

I sort of love walking in the cool rain with this thing on. Keeps water well away from neck, strap is great, and adds just enough warmth for most rainy situations. Would change nothing.

This hat sheds rain and wet snow, fits great, packs up small. We've had lots of rain in CO, this has come in handy.

This hat will repel rain, the Gore-Tex will, as long as it is kept clean and you use some DWR every so often, shed water it most conditions. Reference the reviews below for more on its style and performance.
January 19, 2011
This hat is nothing but a rain hat. It is made of bomber gore-tex and performs as such. The downside is that its too hot and heavy for dry warm weather use. I suppose it would make a decent all-around hat when it cools down in spring and fall.

if i'm close to a measurement should i go under or over? if it stretches out a little, should i go under my head measurement? you get the idea, i don't want it too loose- i figure too tight if it'll loosen.

...go alittle over....these hats are cool in that they have a custom adjuster inside with velcro that will crank it down in size and tighten it up...very cool because it makes your hat totally custom fit.
