San Juan Jacket
Outdoor Research built the San Juan Jacket for bluebird days in light fluffy snow off the beaten path. Its softshell fabric is ruggedly resistant against winds and water to keep you comfy whether you're skinning through wind or skiing through snow spray. The helmet-compatible hood provides additional protection from the elements when you're descending a wide open apron of fresh powder or finding your way up an exposed ridgeline. The jacket moves with your body thanks to movement-mirroring stretch, so your body is covered regardless if you're moving up or down the mountain.
- A softshell jacket built for riding through snow in the backcountry
- Water resistant material sheds dry snow keeping you warm on descent
- Biting wind doesn't penetrate through jacket while ripping skins
- Helmet compatible hood offers extra protection in rough weather
- Movement-mirroring stretch moves with you while carving hop turns
- Lock in heat with elastic drawcord hem during ascents

Breathable, Durable Soft Shell Jacket
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
This is my go-to jacket for snowshoeing and touring in the winter months. This double woven soft shell is "Colorado waterproof," easily shedding the dry snow we see throughout the Rockies. This jacket has great stretch and is also incredibly breathable, helping regulate temperate on long cold ski tours. -Dan, Osprey Rep

Burly Softshell

A well-designed skiing and mountaineering soft shell. The fit is great and allows for full range of motion without lifting or bunching. Construction is quite burly and should stand up to encounters with sharp rocks and branches. I love the cinch-down system on the helmet compatible hood that keeps it secure on the ski down. The wind resistance is excellent, and while it's not waterproof by any means, it has done a good job shedding dry Utah snowfall. For me personally, the jacket is a little thicker than I want for ski touring - it's too heavy for me to wear on the skin up without sweating, so I have to take it off, and for me the whole point of a softshell is to throw it on and leave it on all day. For that, I really love another jacket from Outdoor Research - the Ferrosi. If you move at a slower pace and/or run cold, this would probably be the ticket, however!

It is a great shell for a great price! I did not use it for anything but did go through some weird fall rainstorms with it holding up great! It is not 100% waterproof but does provide decent waterproofing! I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quality shell for an unbeatable price.

Durable material and comfortable fabric makes for a solid shell piece. Breathes well, so it won't keep you warm in anything below 40 degrees, but that's not its purpose. Cool feature I discovered while trying it out is that it has a small key ring leash in the left side hand pocket.

I used this jacket for climbing some multipitch climbs in windy high 40 degree weather and it did a great job in cutting the wind and keeping me warm. I never felt limited in movement while using this jacket, the hood fit well while wearing my climbing helmet. It also breathes really well when building up a sweat from hiking up some steep trails. This jacket also just looks great! I got several compliments from other climbers and friends asking what jacket I was wearing This jacket would work really well for any activity where you need to be protected from wind and small percipitation but need the extra breathability. I’m 6’0 145lbs and the M fit perfectly.

Hey Dana - Thank you for the review. The San Juan is great because it has not membrane to make you overheat, although the tight weave can warm up if really working it uphill. Still, better than with a membrane! Appreciate the review! Leta OR Rep
