Refuge Hooded Insulated Jacket

Designed for high-output cold weather missions where insulation is key but temperature regulation is paramount, the Outdoor Research Refuge Hooded Insulated Jacket delivers breathable warmth and comfortable movement in the mountains. Whether you're climbing on a cold fall day or ski-touring deep in the winter, this jacket and its VerticalX insulation help keep you at an optimal temperature, even when you're working hard. The lofty VerticalX fill and a special ActiveTemp fabric treatment help keep you from getting too warm as you skin up steep ridgelines, while the fabric's mechanical stretch ensures uninhibited movement on chilly alpine climbs. The Refuge has also got a weather-resistant shell that protects you from chilly alpine gusts and light-to-steady snowfall, while the helmet-compatible hood with a special Hood Lock system gives you a snug fit with or without a helmet, so you'll be comfortable and covered whether you're shredding a fresh run with your helmet securely fastened or hanging around the campfire with a baseball hat at the end of the day.

Good Jacket

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

First off I have seen many reviews saying this jacket runs small however that is not the case for me. I originally ordered one size bigger than normal and this was too big, so I returned and ordered my true size, XL, and this fits perfect both with only a t-shirt or a flannel or hoodie underneath. Since I ordered this in summer on sale I can not speak to how this preforms in the winter, however just trying it on made me warm so I can tell it will be a good jacket for those early/mid/late fall and winter days. I would fully expect to be warm anywhere from 10F - 40F depending how I layer. I bought this jacket on sale for under $200 and it was a no-brainer purchase. However I would not be as keen to buy at full price since I like a good deal. I would recommend for anyone in the market for a lightweight jacket. Also the hood it big, and meant for a helmet underneath, however adjusting the draw string in the back makes the hood fit and feel like normal. All around great jacket.

I love this jacket! Not only is it lightweight, but it is very warm. I would say it is warmer than my Patagonia Nano Puff jacket and made with more durable materials that stretch. I use this jacket as an insulating layer when snowboarding on really cold days or as my outer layer when snowshoeing. It is super wind resistant and it says water resistant but I went snowshoeing in this jacket in a blizzard and stayed warm and dry the whole time. Great addition to your layering system but versatile enough to be an outer jacket as well.

My wife purchased the OR Refuge for me for Christmas. I needed an all around jacket. One that would work just as well hiking the smokies as it would walking my jobsite at work. I couldn't be happier! It packs down well enough into its pocket and weighs a decent amount. I just hiked a 26 mile trail in the south Cumberland mountains wearing it. It was in the low 40's during the day and this jacket over my marino baselayer kept me warm and dry while hiking. I was pushing pretty hard on a few sections and I noticed zero sweat buildup, in my experience that means its breathes really well. The evening dropped into the teens and I was just as toasty. I've worn it at work as a construction superintendent walking the site well into the teens and I have always been warm. I was caught in a decent rain shower and it shed it off without issue. The fit is perfect. I can easily layer under it if the weather permits and my shell fits over it no problem. I was pretty shocked at how well it regulates temperature. I often walk into our office trailer and forget I'm wearing it even with the heat on. The only flaws I see are the weight and hood. It weighs a little more than some of the competition but its also warmer. I would rather carry the extra 4 ounces knowing I'm going to be warm. The second flaw Is the hood. I don't wear helmets ever so having the massive hood just looks dumb. I understand that this jacket is designed for mountaineering, I just wish OR (and other) companies would offer regular hooded versions of there jackets. All in all this ones awsome and i definitely recommend. Its VERY comfortable and it is now my go to jacket weather I'm hiking, mountain biking, fishing or heading to work.

Awesome review Nicholas! Thanks for giving so much detail about how the jacket holds up during different conditions and activities.

Shouldn’t you be wearing a hard hat on the job site?

I was surprise by how warm this jacket is with out excessive bulk. OR put a lot of thought into the design, and it really paid off. Especially, with the wrist cuff and adjustable hood. The whole piece feels sleeker than you’d expect from a big winter jacket. Some other nice feature was the lining in the pockets and around the neck. Both took the comfort to anther level. I took this jacket on several adventures and it felt great. This jacket is now an automatic go to for those days I refuse to let the cold stop me from having an epic adventure.

This jacket exceeded my expectations! It feels like a great big fluffy hug when you put it on because of the puffy material on the inside. I am a big fan of the wrist cuffs and the adjustable hood grabs the top of your head in such an efficient way that keeps the hood from falling down in strong winds. Very pleased with this coat! 9/10 would recommend to a friend.

Best Fall Jacket

At first glance, the jacket does seem to be really puffy for an active insulated layer but it packs down like a champ and you will be happy you have it whether you are belaying halfway up a shady side multi-pitch route in Red Rocks during the fall or earlywinter or high in the alpine pushing to the summit. Me and my climbing partner both used it in Red Rock this past weekend. With a small 20L pack I had for the climb I was able to fit a liter of water snacks some extra emergency cord and the OR Refuge with plenty of room left for more water which I wish I actually had. It kept me warm at belays but was not causing me to overheat wearing it for the last few pitches as the sun was coming down and the wind blowing. I would guess it was about 45 - 50 degrees and it was moderate, non-strenuous climbing wearing it over a tee-shirt. As we made the walk off the sun dropped completely, got a bit colder but with the fast pace walk down I warm and not overheating. Varying layers based on your activity would allow this jacket to fit a wide range of purposes and I consider it a mid-layer option. I’m 5’10” 160, on a sendy day and the size M fits great for fall rock climbing and would say a sporty fit meaning it would be a bit snug if wearing if over a few other warm layers. I large fits me well but would be too big to lead in and would then just serve as a belay jacket. I hope my strange way of telling you this jacket is awesome was useful and will help with your decision.

Fantastic and super helpful review! Love the OR Refuge Jacket!

ordered the large and it fits well. great flexibility with changing temperatures, i.e. handles the cold well (under 25) and isn't too warm at temps above 40. the mobility is nice, too. lightweight and comfortable.

Nice jacket / Poor design

I really like the quality of the jacket but the fit is horrible! Sleeve length is way too long and kinda baggy but the torso is tight! Armpit area was also on the tighter side and not as stretchy. Had to return mine for something else.
