Great Shell!

This shell has been a huge win for me. Water beads right off, loose yet formfitting, and stretches everywhere you want. I'm 5'10" 75Kg and a medium is perfect. I could fit a base layer, a thin fleece jacket, and two down hoodies under this thing. The only drawback I've noticed is a little reduction of shoulder range of movement regardless of what layers I wear, but this hasn't been an issue with daily use.

light weight water protection

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Incredibly light weight and made for running. Made for warmer temps and when not needed, packs down for portability.True to size and pockets are deep enough for a cell phone and blister kit.

Breathable, comfortable, and not waterproof

I really like this jacket. It was my favorite until prolonged exposure to rain. I've owned it for about 10 months and I have used it many times fishing and hiking the 10k+ ranges of SoCal and the Sierra's. My most frequent use of this jacket is for a windproof shell while I am active on the trail. It breaths very well and offers great weather protection without overheating. Unfortunately the Motive Accent jacket or the pants( I hardly use the pants) are not what I would call waterproof. During a previous storm I stood under the spout of my rain gutter. They handled a tremendous amount of water for a short period of time. Today I used the pair durring a 4 mile hike in the rain with no pack. They did well for the first hour. The pair steadily degraded as the hike continued. I had some leakage at the zipper and shoulders. Areas of friction between the arms and legs were soaked along with one of my forearms and a spot on my chest. I was 65% dry. They perform poorly for so-called rain gear. I have not been bushwacking or have had a need to wash my shell yet. It has received minimal, if any abuse. I'm glad this failed close to home and not on top of San Gorgonio. That could have been dangerous. I could not recommend this to a friend as rain gear. This is a good jacket if you don't need to rely on it for rain exposure over 30 minutes. I want to give it four stars, it's great unless it's raining, but this is not waterproof rain gear as advertised.

Pretty good coat that fails in the waterproofing category

I have been using this jacket for about half a season now. I do quite a bit of trail running, Alpine climbing and Rock climbing in it. It is a pretty sweet jacket for fast and light missions and is far better than previous Ascentshell jackets I have tried. It is quite versatile and the material is durable which is why I purchased the jacket. It is definitely a great jacket for summer rock climbing and Alpine climbing because it is breathable and stretchy so on cooler days or higher elevation, it is great all day and fairly durable for the weight(other than the DWR). For trailrunning, it is definitely on the heavy side (300g vs 150g for most jackets) and it also takes up a lot of volume in a running vest. However, it wasn't really designed for that so if running is your main goal, maybe look into a different jacket. One thing to note if buying it: to say this jacket is waterproof is definitely a stretch. It is fairly water resistant but will not keep you dry in a downpour and the DWR performance was definitely reduced after only using the jacket 3 or 4 times so that was a bit of a bummer. Reproofing the Jacket helped but only so much. It is definitely not as good as a performer as other 'soft hardshell' jackets I have used in the same category. Overall it is a great light jacket that is surprisingly durable and versatile for a very reasonable price.

"Breathable" but no vents

I ordered black but it is very very clearly navy blue and does not match any other black from OR or any other brand. So that was my first downside. Next is how they advertise this jacket as breathable but it has no vents. Quite disappointed in it but it is very waterproof and keeps you dry from the outside.

Highly breathable

I run really hot and this jacket was great in helping me vent some of that heat without having to fiddle with pit-zips (which I hate). Impressive design and sufficiently waterproof that I had 0 problems even in Chilean Patagonia. Highly recommend.

Just what I wanted

I purchased the AscentShell for a lightweight backpack on Vermont's Long Trail. I poured one day not like my home NW type of wetness, but cold buckets for the whole day. The trail that day took me over several sweat evoking mountains and ridges but my shell kept me dry and breathed beautifully!

Perfect all season shell.

This is my first purchase for Outdoor Research and it is exactly what I was looking for. Great as a Spring or Fall rain shell and great as a Winter outter shell. It works for summer too if you are in a downpour although I have something else as a just in case rain jacket, but now might go for another OR product. The packability is good especially for what this jacket is and better than comparative jackets and it's fairly lightweight. I was caught in a late winter hailstorm mix with rain and snow too and this jacket couldn't have performed better. This jacket kept my mid/base layers dry and doesn't interfere with breathability. I think it works best in cooler to below freezing weather with other layers, but it is also fine in summer with just a T-shirt on. There really is no need for another rain shell if you want one to wear all year. For the price it can't be beat in this category. I am more than extremely happy with my purchase. I am looking forward my next gear purchase from Outdoor Research

Great lightweight rain jacket

Don't expect this jacket to keep you warm but it will keep you dry. I've been in a few rainy situations so far and it's kept me dry and comfortable. The jacket fits well if you're slim (I'm 6'4" and wear a large). Adding a sweater or bulkier clothing works but you can't bundle up too much without the jacket feeling tight. I have a winter coat I use for cold weather situations so this jacket is good for mild to warm weather. It's a great jacket that will serve me well.
