Light as a feather, strong as dragon scales.

Explore misty mountains with the Outdoor Research Men's Mithril Softshell Jacket protecting you from sudden downpours. This three-layer jacket magically combines the comfort of a softshell with the protection of a hardshell, including a waterproof, breathable Ventia membrane and fully taped seams. Protection like this can fend off snowflakes and raindrops and still keep you comfortable on steep tours in the backcountry. Outdoor Research lined the Mithril in smooth microfleece for moisture management as well as lightweight warmth. There are adjustments at the hood, hem, and each cuff for secure coverage.

I made the mistake of listening to the idiot on the OR website whose review indicated this jacket is "not very warm", and wore a Marmot stretch fleece under it the first time out in the rain. It was < 45 degrees outside, and after walking half a mile non-strenuously, I was sweating but completely dry. (By comparison, my 10-year old TNF Summit hardshell has basically the same effect with similar layering, and that's 3L Gore-Tex.)

The jacket also handles wind well gusts over 30 mph without a hitch. If you're active - as you're supposed to be when wearing this kind of shell - you'll be very comfortable with just a baselayer in temps close to freezing. Colder than that, add another layer and you're good.

The material flexes with you, and for my "athletic" build is perfect over a base layer, light fleece midlayer or both, without any noticeable restriction of arm movement.

The material feels very durable, but time will tell; one review that made me hesitate said the seam tape peels after a couple years. But then I read the OR warranty, and now I'm not worried about it.

If I have a complaint, it's the absence of pit zips - I'm hoping to (finally) replace my TNF shell and use this as my main winter ski shell, but would be nice to be able to use it in spring as well.

Yea, I have this jacket too, and I love it. OR did a great job making a softshell that is waterproof. It isn't supposed to be warm, its a softshell. I normally wear large in OR but I went with an XL so I could layer under it and it is cut a little small anyway.
