    Built for alpine assaults.

Ready to handle your alpine forays, the Outdoor Research Men's Maximus Pant is a winter workhorse that keeps pace with demanding ice climbs and mountaineering missions. Gore-Tex Pro keeps the heaviest snow at bay, and movement-mirroring stretch panels ensure uninhibited mobility, whether you're on a technical climb up or a thrilling ride down.

The Gore-Tex Pro fabric's seams are fully sealed to prevent moisture from seeping in throughout the day, and bib styling helps keep snow out when you're shredding through waist-deep powder. A specialized avalanche beacon pocket secures your transceiver so you don't have to strap it uncomfortably to your chest while climbing. Zippered pockets stow other essentials such as energy gels and maps, and the drop seat lets you heed nature's call without removing your suspenders.

    • Stretch panels boost breathability and flex

    No poweder down my pants!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 193lbs

These pants are the most legit pants I've ever put on! Living in Colorado I love my powder days and I love my ice climbing days! I needed something that was tough and could stand up against ice walls that would also stop powder from falling down my pants after a big dump! These pants to it all!!

    Great quality but un-specific cut

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 155lbs

These are a little too baggy to fit properly around a climbing boot. Not ideal for mountaineering or skiing. would be a better if they just made it either 100% for climbing or 100% for skiing. they are trying to attract more people with a less specific product that wont meet the needs of either market

    Good materials, poor design

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'2"
    • Weight: 180lbs

There are some merits for these pants to work great for some for climbing and mountaineering. The quality of the fabric is top notch and features are what we are looking for in a backcountry ski\snowboard and mountaineering shell pant.

But who were they made to fit? I'm a solid 34x34 and OR Large in every pant I've had, so I bought these online.

They don't fit around my alpine boots or any snowboard boot. But did around my AT boot but getting to the buckles and power strap required unzipping the cuff. The avlanche beacon pocket sits very high when crouching (tightening boots or tucking knees) the beacon will smash into my hip. The clip is good for keys though.

The waist is tight, the legs are tight and the crotch is cut high. Anyone with muscular legs will have a problem.

Its subtle but important that the fly zipper is tiny and difficult to use wearing gloves, its the only zipper you're guaranteed to use and hardest to grab.

Can OR just make the Vangaurd Bib or the old Access pant with a bib please? Please stop trying to reinvent the wheel every 3 years.

    Good materials, poor design

    Hey Reid,

So in no way were these pants designed to fit around a snowboard boot, ski boot or really even an AT boot. The Maximus is designed for alpine climbing and ice climbing, so you are accurate that it would not fit around those boots you mentioned. It sounds like you purchased the wrong pant for your use? For a Gore ski shell, I HIGHLY recommend the Furio Pant for those boots.

Now, I will pass your feedback on to OR about the fit, since I haven't heard that before. And point taken about the zipper pull - thank you for addressing it.

The Vanguard and Access had very limited sales, which is why they do not offer it anymore.

    OR Rep

    Hey Leta,
I believe some of the older designs were too bomber, so guys like me that bought them 8 years ago now need new ones. I'm still using a 8 year old Access Jacket.
If the Furio were a bib, I'd have them.

I have a comment for backcountry.com, not you Reid. If these are in no way designed to go over a ski, snowboard, or even an alpine boot then whey do they show up when I select ski pants to narrow down my selection? Maybe get the category of the pants updated....

Do these pants have any venting?
