Why We Like The Hemispheres Jacket

The Hemispheres Jacket is new to Outdoor Research's lineup of bomber winter gear, and it's ready to rip—frontcountry or back. It features a GORE-TEX membrane with fully sealed seams, delivering a dry ride from first chair to last, from skin track to powdery descent, all winter long. And, due to the breathable nature of the membrane, you won't find yourself overheating when you're scouting out the goods. Side vents do run from hem to pit, though, so there's plenty of ventilation if you really need to dump excess heat. Should the forecast call for stormy weather instead, you'll be more than prepared to face an onslaught of flying snow, with an adjustable storm hood, drawcord hem, and hook-and-loop cuffs to keep the cold out.

Where the Hemispheres Jacket really stands out from the crowd of other hardshells, however, is the incorporation of Gore-Tex stretch panels at the hood and beneath the arms. This fabric works just like regular Gore-Tex, providing breathable, waterproof protection, but it does so with unparalleled stretch—leaving you free to focus on the fresh tracks ahead.

Women's?

No room in chest. 5'3", B chest, 120 lbs, and I could barely zip it closed (size Small). Side zippers allow for hips, and sleeves allow shoulder movement, but no room in torso. A larger size would have meant sleeves down to my knees. Returned.

Great for squares, less so for pears

Stretch to fabric, ability to shed water, fun purple color, hood that can accommodate a helmet, and good pocket placement are all a plus (it was the material + pocket placement that won me over). However, I have a classic "pear shape" physique (as many women do). Had to buy one size up so it's roomier than necessary on top and tight enough where the zipper starts at the bottom that I sure hope I don't gain any weight. Not ideal but I have yet to find the jacket maker that nails shape, size, and functionality "just right".

Great fit and mobility

I first tried the S and found the sleeves way too long and roomy. The XS fits much better but may be a little constricting around the hips with a lot of layering. I am 5'2" and 114 lbs. Love the big side zips and the mobility in the arms.

Fabulous jacket

I am in love with this jacket. I'm petite so struggle to find something that fits appropriately. This is in the perfect Goldilocks Zone, not too tight that I can't layer and move, and not looking like a circus tent draped over my torso either. I love all the zippers and pockets, yet it's clean and simple design makes it packable and perfect for the backcountry. I recently wore this on a wet and windy day in the mountains and it kept me dry all day. What a satisfying feeling to watch water bead right off and never soak in!

Functions beautifully, fit is very good

I love this jacket. The stretch panels help me feel like my movement is never impaired, I get plenty of breathability from the size zipper vents, and the stash pockets on the inside are excellent for goggles, sunglasses, or skins. Although I am 5'2", I went with the medium, because I am very curvy at the butt, hips, and thighs. This jackets hits me at mid-butt, so it needed to be big enough to go over my butt and the small would have been too tight. The medium goes over my hips and butt perfectly and has room for layers, but isn't too baggy. However, the arms are comically long on me. I know this is partly because I had to size up and I'm only 5'2", but I have other medium-sized jackets where the arms are not this long. The lower part of the arms are also very wide, which is nice if you use undercuff gloves, but even then it seems excessive. The velcro adjustment makes it so I can make this work, but it can be a struggle with large, cold-weather, overcuff mittens. So, in summary, the jacket functions beautifully, but there are a few fit things that could be tweaked. OR in general really needs to make more gear for short, curvy athletes.

Good for skiing

Love the design and fit. I brought this three years ago, and this jacket and hemisphere bib are my go to outerwear for my backcountry skiing and resort skiing. I like the elasticity of the jacket. Waterproof lasted well only for one season. Even after I treat it with Nikwax several times, it does not protect my inner puffy jacket from getting wet under heavy rain esp shoulder and wrist part. While riding lift chair, my thigh also get wet wearing hemisphere bib. Probably still good for snowy weather and it is no worse than any other gore tex water proof jacket. If I expect heavy rain in the resort I usually bring construction work wear that is 100% water proof and wear it over this jacket. It is hard shell jacket without insulation so I bought a little larger size to be able to add some layers inside. It Is easy to pack in the backpack during summer for backcountry ski. wish it had bigger pockets to put climbing skins

LOVE THIS JACKET!

It's got all the things and the best part is the up/down dual action zipper. I love this for backcountry use with my beacon. You won't be sad about this jacket or the customer service you'll receive with Outdoor Research. They ALWAYS take such good care of their customers.

Poor quality - material broke down within 1 season

Used this jacket skiing but found that inside material broke down within a couple uses when wearing a small backpack with the jacket.

Great Goretex Jacket for Touring

Great jacket for ski touring. Love the full side zips for ventilation. Sometimes the pocket zippers get stuck due to the inside lining getting caught in the zipper. That's my only complaint.
