i knew i would like these, because i had already bought the Ferrosi shorts months earlier, and they quickly became a favourite i had originally thought about buying the convertible Ferrosi pants (long pants with zippers just above the knees so you can convert them to shorts), but i have bought several pairs of convertible pants years ago and i seem to always lose one of the leg pieces after i unzip them for me, the ideal pair of hiking pants: (i) have elastic in them and fit tight enough so that big steps up (eg, my foot placed on a rock just below my waist) isn't constrained because my pants are too lose or lack any give in the fabric; (ii) thin enough so legs don't overheat (if it's cold i will put on baselayer bottoms underneath); (iii) dry quickly: i don't care for waterproof pants; if it's raining, i don't mind getting wet as long as i know i can get dry quickly; (iv) a sensible combination of easy-to-reach pockets and pockets secured with zipper; (v) an "open" leg at the bottom (so they do not look like sweatpants); (vi) a decent-enough fit, doesn't have to fit like expensive dress pants, but well enough that i don't feel weird wearing them in a cafe; and (vii) sized more or less like jeans so i can get the right size on the first try so these Ferrosi check all of these boxes for me, five stars

Great Summer Hiking/Climbing Pant
I've owned one pair for about 3 years now and have worn them religiously in the climbing gym, at the crag, and hiking in the summer months. The Ferrosi pant is super breathable while providing the coverage and protection I want (UPF 50 rated fabric) from the sun. After 3 years of use in some areas with very abrasive rock (granite in the Wind River Range, sandstone in Indian Creek) I've got a few spots showing some wear and tear but they still have plenty of life left in them! - Dan, Outdoor Research Rep

I bought these pants because I was looking for a very lightweight pair of hiking pants as we have been suffering through a long heat wave here in NE NJ. Temps in the 90's with high humidity makes for tough going. When hiking I prefer long pants as opposed to shorts for a few reasons - better protection against bugs, branches and poison ivy as well as getting my legs from scrapes by the rocks. So I got to try them out last week while hiking in Minnewaska Preserve and they proved their worth. I't like some other reviewers mentioned - "like not wearing anything." The fabric is extremely lightweight - so much so that I brought another pair of pants just in case these got ripped while doing some scrambles. Well, I did run into a few scrambles and no problem at all with them scraping along the rocks. Fabric is extremely stretchy - which is obviously helpful when hiking. Minor picks - I wish the front "cargo" pocket would be long enough to hold a cell phone and I prefer a more tapered lower half on the pants. First world problems for sure. All in all, will be my preferred hiking pants when the temps and humidity are high. High;y recommended.

Love these pants so far not much time wearing them. Don't even feel them very comfortable. So far I can tell that the are good in warm weather. I can feel the cold on cold days. You will need to layer for sure....Fits true to size ...I would recommend them

Fit being my pain problem @ an athletic 6ft 185 lbs where thighs never fit me, If it wasn't for the arc'teryx pants I ordered with these I would be using them. Their fit is nice if a little loose at the bottom. But the lack of a built in belt and slightly too loose of a waist means i would have to bring a belt with me on 100 mile hike which is just not going to happen. Order the size your order in your street pants.

Super light and comfy hot weather pants

I hike regularly in kings canyon and sequoia national park in the central sierras. The temps here can hit low 90s at 4000-5000ft. These pants provide breathability and plenty of motion. Last season I tried out TNF paramount active pants, which were very light and breathable. But these pants blow them out of the water. These pants seem less durable than the Prana zion stretch, so I wouldn't lean on them for bushwacking or rubbing against rocks, they are perfect for hiking in hot weather.

I have been using OR Ferrosi pants for backpacking, hunting, fishing and all outdoor activities for many years. The new design is a huge disappointment. They have made changes that effect the usefullness of these pants. They eliminated the spring tensioners on elastic band on the pant legs. They replaced elastic with an elastic fabric material with no way to adjust it. New material is cloth and not as strong as old style. They eliminated the zippers on the rear pockets. No way to secure items. BIG MISTAKE! They changed the front slit pockets into a jean style pocket. Items can fall out easily. They made the belt loops narrower and thinner so a belt can easily ride up on waistband. They made these very functional useful outdoor activity pants into a pair of stretch pants not made for rugged outdoor use. I am extremely disappointed. They ruined a good design to save cost.

From climbing to backpacking and sometimes even trail running, I take these things everywhere. The reason I like them so much is because of their breathability. I stay pretty active on most of my trips, and these things wick sweat away like nobody's business. I've worn them as sun protection while trekking across the deserts of Southern Utah in 95 degree heat and found them to be surprisingly adept at keeping me cool and dry. Obviously it was still hot as hell, but the fact that I didn't have to take them off speaks volumes in and of itself. While they'd never provide enough warmth for a snow-excursion at rest, as long as I'm staying moderately active I've found them to work great in cold temperatures. I used them in a moderate snow storm on the way up and down a local mountain in temps as low as 15 degrees. Their DWR finish shed snow easily and kept me dry and I found them to be surprisingly wind resistant given their insane breathability. They also offer plenty of stretch to climb in or even wear while doing some early morning yoga outside your tent. They also pack down quite small and are very lightweight. I haven't tested the thigh pocket with anything bigger than my iPhone X, but that fits comfortably and doesn't effect the mobility of the pants at all. My one complaint is that the waistband stretches out over time. You can get around this pretty easily with a belt, but for future version either an elastic waistband or integrated belt would be an easy improvement on these.

I recently had the opportunity to try these pants out for the day and immediately bought a pair the next day! By far some of the most comfortable pants I've owned, it feels like you're nothing! I wear these pants all the time and you can wear them for most occasions, not only are they crazy comfy they look great too! As with other OR gear, these are super high quality. I feel like OR has stepped their game up in recent years with better quality products! Even for being lightweight, these feel very durable and feel like a solid product. You wont be disappointed with these pants!

I've owned several pairs of the Ferrosi pants. They're my favorite lightweight summer climbing and hiking pants. This review is of the most recent version (2019). The fabric is still awesome. Lightweight, stretchy, breathable, and durable. This is where they shine. The rear pockets no longer have zips. I'd prefer zipped pockets on technical pants to prevent losing stuff. But that's not a deal breaker. The front pockets have always been a bit shallow. I'd prefer them to be slightly deeper for modern phones. My biggest issue is the sizing, which is why I only give these 4 stars. I normally wear a 32 in all pants/shorts. On my previous Ferrosi pants, the 32 was always a tiny bit big in the waist, but not too bad. I always wore a lightweight belt just to keep things nice and snug. If anything I wish OR had snugged up the waist a bit so I didn't have to wear a belt at all times. Sizing down would have been tough as the smaller sizes were tight in the hips and thighs. They went the opposite way. These pants are absolutely huge in the waist for a 32. I have a ton of extra room around the waist. I can easily pull them down around my knees even when they're buttoned! Consider sizing down in these. Don't just order your old size without trying them on. Otherwise, they're still great pants.

Comfy Pants

These pants are comfy! Great range of pockets to use with a harness or not. The bottom pant leg adjustability is great. I like a longer pant leg so I can still wear them with sandals and just tighten them so I don't step on the hems. Super breathable and thin. Fairly weather resistant. Great for anything, anytime!

Purchased a pair for scrambling and wanted something that was light, wind resistant, comfy, and durable. It hit the mark on everything but the last part. Wore them summiting the Middle Sister in June and sitting on down on the cinder crap piles in the saddle left noticeable tears in the seat. Brushing against some cinder crap up towards the last 500ft resulted in more tiny subtle tears. It is doubtful they’d last a season of central Oregon scramble adventures.

Hey Eli, Thank you for the review. The durability is what it can be for the lightweight aspect of these pants. That is a key benefit of these pants, but there is some sacrifice in abrasion durability if that is what is most important to you. For a pant that offers something a bit more efficient in durability, you will be sacrificing light weight features. A totally valid option here would be the OR Voodoo Pant. The Ferrosi Pants are best for hiking, travel, and more light-durability adventures. The Voodoo gives a greater degree of durability with a more dense fabric. Thank you, Leta OR Rep

I have a couple of the short version of these pants as well as the long. They run just a slight larger. ( I’m 5’11 and 158 lbs). Size 30x32 fit me perfect and OR finally added a 32 inch inseam this year (formerly, 30x30 was only available). The material is durable, flexible, and light , great for warm climates.

The entire Ferrosi line from OR is incredible breathable and comfortable for your most dynamic, demanding outdoor activities. These shorts are no exception. I recommend them for anything from hiking to climbing and anything in between. Note that if you have thunder thighs, you should size up about an inch at the waist.

I swear these things are like a second skin. They move well due to the nylon and spandex construction, breathe well, have 3 zippered pockets (1 on the left, 2 in the back), and crush it on hikes/climbing/adventures of all sorts. I wear these climbing, hiking, and I'm taking them to Peru for adventures too. I'm impressed how well they've held up against scarpes and brush too. I can be anywhere between a 30 and a 32 and a 30 is perfect here. I wouldn't say size down for sure, but that's my experience.

These pants are very lightweight, comfortable, and stretchy. They breathe very well making them a great option for summer hiking/climbing when you want a longer pant to protect the legs. These pants are durable, the ripstop material is strong and won't be phased by branches or from the wall when you are climbing. They are so stretchy that even the hardest yoga positions wouldn't be an issue. They are water resistant and have a nice side pocket with a zipper to keep the phone safe on a climb, along with the traditional pockets. I am 6'0 175 and usually wear a 32x32 and a 32x32 worked just great for me.

The Ferrosi Hoody is made of some magic stuff - super light and breathable, yet highly wind resistant and durable. It is also stretchy making it comfortable during high activity... so what does any of that have to do with these pants? The Ferrosi pants are incredible. They are impossibly light - so light you'll forget you're wearing pants. They are super stretchy and thin, and move incredibly well, yet remain amazingly protective and abrasion resistant. Again, this fabric is some magical stuff. But it works.

Do these new design fit different the the previous version of these pants? I see people are saying they run larger. Do you know if this is true. Thanks
