Capstone Heated Gloves
From cool groomer days to sub-zero powder days, the Outdoor Research Capstone Heated Gloves offer the pinnacle of warmth and performance. Built with an AltiHeat rechargeable battery-powered heating system, these gloves feature the option of running two batteries per glove and offer an enhanced heating element surface for toasty-warm heat output.
In addition to battery operated heat, the Capstone Gloves feature a Gore-Tex insert for waterproof, breathable protection. A combination of PrimaLoft HiLoft Silver and EnduraLoft insulations offer essential warmth that ensures you won't have to pay a visit to the warming hut on days that you've foregone the AltiHeat. - Q & A
they are helpful BUT.....
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
These gloves offer no heat at the tips of fingers , nor the palm side of the fingers/hands. They are much better than NON heated gloves for me and really help me stay outside longer on the slopes. Had a battery that died first hour of use on a neg 6 degree day, called and customer service said he said would ship out another that day.....fast forward two weeks, still no battery. Call again, no record of me calling the first time, again told me he would send an extra battery the following monday....fast forward 3 more weeks, no battery, called again and finally spoke with a very nice woman who was very apologetic and sent me an extra set over night shipping. They work well , used these one season and they are great gloves without the heater as well. . Charging takes 6-8 hours. I do wear very very thin merino wool liners which fixes the sweating problems that a lot of people complain about. If I had to purchase again, I would go with a brand that offers complete heated fingers and the palm side heating.
Great Glove...Poor Battery
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I bought these last winter and used them quite a bit. I love how effective the heat is at keeping my fingers warm even on cold days. The control is pretty easy to use. The glove has an amazing fit and is really durable.
The down side to these gloves is that I can only get about 2-3 hours when the power is on the medium and only about 1 hour if it is on high. My fingers get really cold easily so I use the medium and high setting quite a bit. The low setting doesn't do much for me on cold days but I need to use it to conserve battery life. I will likely have to get another battery, but for the cost, I was hoping the dual battery would be plenty for a full ski day (as it was advertised).
Looking for a challenge
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I recently bought these gloves and think I may never sit out cold again. Already had the Hotronic heated insoles, so the weak link had been my fingers. Not now! I used these this past weekend and while it didn't get below 20F, I was actually keeping the heat off and taking the gloves off once I got into the lift line. This makes the included leashes very useful. Early in the morning I was a bit cold, turned on the heat for 5-10min and then turned them off the rest of the day. This glove will be too warm above 30F even w/o the power on.
The fit seemed true to size, though I ordered these a size up expecting limited dexterity, but that is not a problem for typical ski pole grip.
I will protect these gloves and look forward to years of use from them. I'll try to update/replace this review when I have more extensive testing under more brutal conditions. My Swix leather/GoreTex were OK down to 15F, and I expect Outdoor Re will be good down below 0F...
I wear a size 8 Hestra glove perfectly with no room for a liner save a silk one. The medium in the Capstone is larger a bit. But itâs a good thing. The heating element warms on top and down the fingers. But not to the tips. In my case on the lift if the tops get cool, the slightly larger gloves allow them to pull back into the heat on the lift. Iâve worn them but one time so far and they work as advertised. Theyâre warm all on their own, and in the 14 degree morning I turned them on the lowest setting and they were fine for about an hour. I took them off outside and pushed them to the highest setting for 10 minuets and had to turn it down again to the lowest setting. It got too warm!
Ok but design flaw
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Bought these for fat-biking in brutally cold MN winters, often less than zero F. I find riding is tough on my hands since my hands are basically stuck grabbing bars and my fingers just get frost-bitten. Anyway, wanted to love these. And to be fair, they are nice, high-qaility gloves. The two sets of batteries are nice. What I don't like is the design of the heating system. It seems to warm my whole hand equally, thus causing sweat in my palm area but my finger tips can remain cold. Why not max heat at finger tips, where everyone seems to need it, and reduce heat in palm area? At $400 pair I expected more. Still, if you need warm GLOVES, these are probably the warmest. I've warn many other high-quality gloves and these surpass all of them.
Are both sides of the glove heated? (i.e. the palm and the top surface) and is the thumb heated? Thanks, Crystal
Hi Crystal. Sorry for my delay here. No, just the back of the hand, where your blood vessels are closest to the surface. This glove is insanely warm. You will love it!
