Bug Helios Hat

Outdoor Research's extremely popular Helios has taken the hiking and fly fishing community by storm. Instead of reinventing the wheel, they added a bug net to the crown  to create the Bug Helios Hat. This hat has the same UPF 50+ rating that resists the dangerous rays of the sun, and is constructed with the same breathable, moisture-wicking material. The only real difference is the band just above the brim that hides a full-face bug net to protect you from mean, biting critters.
  • Full-brim hat for fishing and hiking
  • UPF 50+ for defense against the sun
  • Bug net tucks away when not in use
  • Adjustable chin strap for windy days

Bought this hat for the black fly hatch in spring and it has proved to be one of my favorite investments for early summer outdoor recreation. Even when it’s not buggy out this is one of my favorite hiking hats due to how well it packs and it’s weight.

I had this had and when there were bugs the built in bug net was amazing. All that additional fabric was incredibly hot though. You could find relief from the heat by opening up the bug net "pocket" and having the bug net out and draped back sort of like a habit but it looked stupid and created a lot of drag along your pack as you looked around. The construction seemed really solid though. Overall it was a good enough had I wasn't looking to replace it until I lost it on a back packing trip. (it was too hot that day so I took it off and just used a bandanna) I had strapped it to my pack but not well enough. I guess a hat that is too hot to keep on during a hot day is problematic. If you don't generally run hot it may be a good hat for you. Personally I just keep a separate bug net that I can toss over my hat if need be these days.

Perfect Hat!

This hat has everything! The bug net tucks away on the outside of the hat and the strap keeps the hat securely on my head. Goof for rain or shine.

Hey Linda - isn't it though? Well designed and gives you the protection you need, sun or bug! Leta OR rep
