Alti Glove

The Alti Glove already has a reputation for standing up to brutal alpine conditions, but this season, these bombproof expedition gloves got a big boost in ergonomics. Outdoor research has a die-hard mission to create something that's innovative and actually works, and its all-new 3DFit Technology is no exception. Rather than translating a two-dimensional design into a three-dimensional glove, Outdoor Research used a process of draping fabrics on three-dimensional molds of the human hand in different positions to create a dramatically different glove shape that minimizes bulk and maximizes dexterity. The result is better handling and grip of ski poles, ropes, or ice axes.

Built with the ever-trustworthy protection of Gore-Tex and an even heartier dose of PrimaLoft insulation than years before, this ski-mountaineering glove provides excellent warmth, waterproofing, and breathability without sacrificing tactile ability. And while these gloves are geared towards technical objectives, that doesn't mean they lack a few more luxurious details, like the soft nose-wipe thumb and removable, touchscreen-compatible liner with silicone grip palm.

  • Mountaineering gloves built for the harshest conditions
  • Trustworthy waterproof, breathable protection from Gore-Tex
  • Lightweight PrimaLoft HiLoft insulation keeps digits warm
  • All-new 3DFit Technology provides increased dexterity
  • Articulated fingers for excellent grip on ropes and tools
  • Removable touchscreen-compatible liners

WOW !!

Just got back from 7-day CO trip where temps were well below zero....very glad I got these before I left and had subjected them to my scientific "test." :) Here's how I compared the Alti's to three other top-of-the-line winter gloves . My "test" consisted of putting different gloves on each hand and then sticking both into a bucket of ice water and grabbing the ice to test the palms, too. It was evident within a minute that these kept the cold out longer. In use they were even better than anticipated. Breathability was outstanding: I tend to get sweaty hands, but didn't at all with these. Also, with no leather on the exterior, no moisture soaked into the shell...as happens to even to the best treated leather in my experience. The little moisture that accumulated inside quickly dried out when either removing the liner.,or when my activity level decreased. Other things to note: You get three pairs of gloves with these. Tough waterproof shells with some insulating ability. Liner is great for aerobic activities when worn alone. Or combine them for frigid temps. The only minor thing that could be improved would be more velcro securing the liner on two sides (rather than one) because it would tend to come out when pulling my hand out. If you need to be taking the gloves on and off frequently, the BD liner is more secure, but the trade off , IMO, wasn't worth it.

Backcountry Great. This Glove not for me

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I had an old version of this glove from OR. They were great, super warm, easy on and off and decent dexterity. New version has a liner, like wearing and keeping track of 4 gloves. I Didn’t see that in the description. Very little dexterity. You can accomplish almost nothing with them on, might as well have Mittens. When you take them off to do whatever it takes almost a minute to get all 4 sets of gloves back on. Most frustrating is that tiny loop meant to pull the gloves on is too small to use when wearing a glove. I Wore them skijouring once, I needed to take them off to deal with gear and give the dogs treats. I nearly froze my thumb because I was putzing around trying to take 4 gloves on and off so much.

Shell fingers much too short

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

OR's size chart indicated my size as L. That's what I ordered and received. Inner gloves fit perfect. All fingers and both thumbs of shells were about 1/4" too short, and didn't fully extend to the webs between fingers. Very disappointing. I returned them. Didn't order XL because I thought the inner gloves would be too big and the extra material would bunch up inside the shells, which would make the fingers colder.

Warm Waterproof absolutely no dexterity

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Used these gloves twice this season, one day it was raining on the slopes. Hands were super warm and dry all day. Biggest problem is that the inner liners and the shell don't seem to match up. It leaves you with to much room in the fingers but to tight in the palm. The also made the gloves feel like they have no dexterity at all. I even had difficulty in latching my ski boots, which wouldn't even be hard if i were wearing my mittens. I will be returning these gloves for a pair that has more dexterity.

Warm Glove but the Fit is a little off

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Used gloves for snowboarding this season and stayed dry and warm every time. Liner fits great, but the outer shell fit is a little short in the fingers especially between the thumb and index finger.

Not warm, despite great construction

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Writing on behalf of my SO, we were very disappointed in these gloves. Her hands were cold and needed a handwarmer inside of them despite it only being 20*F out. The construction is excellent, the functionality was great. The liner was easily removed and the glove is relatively comfortable (despite being a bit bulky)... but the warmth was completely unacceptable for the price.

Didn't work for me

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These gloves had an odd fit that didn't work for me. In addition, the liners didn't seem to integrate well with the gloves. My hands are small and I ordered a small so I don't think sizing was the issue. I returned them after a single use.

Terrible warranty service

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Purchased the gloves for cold wet weather. Used 6 times and noticed one of the seams on the right liner gloves was splitting open. I emailed the Outdoor Research Warranty department attaching a picture and received an email acknowledgement stating would hear from them in 2 weeks. After two weeks with nothing from Outdoor Research I contacted Backcountry who are setting up a store credit so I can get a good pair of gloves. I will stay away from outdoor research products in the future.

Bad Fit

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I ordered these gloves in hopes to keep my hands warm in 0 degree conditions. The gloves themselves appear to be warm enough but the fit around the fingers is really off. The valley between the fingers is shallow and does not go all the way down to where the valley between the really is, leaving one with limited dexterity. The liners fit well and have a good range of motion, the problem lies with the outer glove. I cannot attest to the warmth of the glove as I returned them because of the fit.

Poor weird unusable fit

I purchased these last year mostly for riding my fat bike in the mountains of Wyoming. Short story, didn’t ride at all last winter. Now this winter I am using them and found that the liner glove and shell are so poorly mismatched in size it like someone opened the package and changed them on purpose. The blue inside glove is HUGE, like floppy finger tips huge. The insulated shell outer glove has fingers that are so short that I can’t grab the bar and reach the brake lever at the same time. There is this unnatural space beteeen the fingers where the glove won’t reach my hands. Like the were made for someone with short stubby half fingers. Now how the liner glove with the super long fingers is supposed to fit with the shell glove with super stubby fingers is beyond me. They are warm, but very disappointing for a pair of OR gloves that cost $158.00. I wish I could return or exchange them. They will only be used for pushing the snow blower. I don’t recommend these for anything. One star because -1 wasn’t an option.

Fit Concerns

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

Can't speak to the performance of the glove itself, but will echo the general sentiment of a few other folks, as I too had some surprising issues with fit. I have a pretty normal size medium hand, nothing special about my fingers, but these gloves had a pretty narrow cut in the palm which made it impossible for my to spread my thumb fully. Never had that problem in any pair of gloves I've purchased, including other OR gloves. I ended up returning the gloves without even using them.

Bad fit

I really wanted these gloves but I must confirm that like many of the reviewers of this and other OR gloves have said the XL’s have short fingers. Unbearably short. Who did they have in mind when they cut the patterns for these? Giant munchkins? It’s horrible. Many reviews for many of their gloves state clearly that the large and extra large gloves have short fingers while the smalls have long fingers lol. Who’s smokin pot over there? Needless to say they were promptly sent back. Looks like I’m stuck wearing mittens. I will say they seem well constructed and warm if they fit without cutting off the circulation at the ends of your fingers.

Great engineering, terrible fit

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

These look like a really good pair of gloves for keeping you warm. My first complaint is they don't make a comparable version in women's (of course...why would women want a good glove?). But I tried a medium anyway since I have really big hands for a women (Typically an XL in women's gloves). They were basically bear hand gloves - the palm was HUGE, I could pinch over an inch of excess room in there, while the fingers were actually too short! Is this how they are supposed to be? I'd like to see the hands that fit in these. Weirdest-fitting glove I've tried on before. I returned.

No more numb hands

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought these gloves for their warmth and Gore-Tex waterproof shell because I tend to get very cold hands in cold conditions. I couldn't be happier with these gloves. I first used them snowboarding this spring up on Mount Rainier and my hands stayed warm when I wore just the outer shells. I then wore them when I climbed to the summit of Rainier with the temps in the teens and I ended up having to switch the insulation liners out for a thin fleece liner because my hands got too hot. The gloves seem to be super durable and I love the new design. The movement constriction has been minimized a ton from the previous design of the glove and can be compared to the gloves you get at Costco, which is a huge plus considering they have way more warmth.

Great value and very warm

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I didn't buy these from backcountry, but I thought I would post my review as I bought these up here in Canada from a local store. I bought a size XL, and the fit at first just didn't seem right, kind of like the previous review. However, after using them a few times they seemed to fit much better. I'm not sure why that is. But. what I can say is they are very, very warm. Like most winter gear, they are warmest when you are active and moving your hands. I've used them when the temp gets down to -25C, with no problem. Even better, if I am doing work like shovelling snow or even just running the snowblower, they have been very warm. The dexterity is not the greatest, but by comparison, most of the gloves I have with high dexterity are significantly less warm. When I go outside, and if keeping my hands warm is the priority, I'll choose my Alti gloves. For reference, I have a pair of North Face Vengeance, and a pair of Arcteryx Betas with the liners (2016s) and the OR Altis are the warmest. Another feature I like is the gauntlets are large and I can get the sleeves of my jacket under the gauntlet, even when wearing both gloves on when it's always harder to tuck the second sleeve in after you've put both gloves on. Some gloves, this is very difficult because of the combination of dexterity and size of the gauntlet. At the price these are being offered, they are an excellent glove for the really cold days. For warmer days (temperatures above -10C) these gloves may even be too warm. When I first got them, I thought I might return them because of the fitment I mentioned earlier, but after trying "to get along" with them a few more times I am really happy I kept them. best glove I have ever bought. I can't speak to their water resistance because here in Calgary, we don't really see much in the way moist conditions, but they are Goretex, and are very well put together, so I'm pretty confident in their ability to stay dry if the need ever arises. Great glove and probably the best value you can find in a cold weather glove.

Thank you for your review, Carl. I find that all gloves tend to have a degree of "break in" and will feel even better after you use them a bit. So glad you love these gloves! Enjoy! Leta OR Rep

Nice, but not for me.

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

For some reason, these did not fit me well at all. I have small hands for a dude, but kinda long and skinny fingers. Both L and XL made my hands feel very cramped. I honestly couldn't tell a difference between the sizes. Too bad, because they seem really well made and look like they'd be warm. Won't deduct points for fit as that is subjective, but I will knock points off for excessive straps, cords, etc. If I'd kept them, I'd be removing some stuff/ trimming them back to avoid annoyance.

Thank you for the review, and I am sorry these didnt work for you! Leta OR Rep
