Travelling Backpack

I used this backpack to travel through Europe for 7 weeks carrying its max 46L size. The backpack is very durable and comfortable once you get it exactly right where you want it to be. You need to adjust it a lot though for it to be comfortable. You can access the items inside form multiple different pockets on the backpack. The only con on this bag is the very bottom of the back piece stabs into your back if the bag is to big or it is not adjusted right to your fit. Once it is adjusted though it fits perfectly. This bag is easy to carry around with you while traveling, I much rather have this then a roller bag.

    Great First Pack

I bought this bag for a ten day trip to Europe and did a lot of research before picking this one. I like the idea of having some extra straps and a lighter frame. This pack is amazing, the size is great for a beginner backpacker.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this pack for weekend and overnight trips with my dog. I really like the size and the many adjustments that can be made to get the pack in the sweet spot! I can fit my hammock, tarp, cooking gear, food extra set clothes, top quilt and underquilt, the dogs gear...small hammock with pad plus his food ( strong dog but getting older so I carry his stuff) i hike near lot of creeks so no need to tote lots of water..just use the Be Free small stuff..i'd phone ect..and I still have room for more! I like the way the compression straps pull everything in nice and snug. This is a great pack for me

      no bottle pockets

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Possible great pack with completely unusable water bottle pockets. That's just not something i can get by frustrated because it might be the perfect pack for me otherwise. How can no one at Osprey have actually tried getting a bottle in/out while wearing the pack?

      Great Fit with Outside Straps

Bought this pack for my girlfriend, heres what she has to say:
"I did a lot of research before buying this pack because I wanted to make sure that I got a backpacking bag that fit well and that could carry all of my gear for short 2-3 day backpacking trips. I opted for the Kyte 46 instead of the Aura 50 because the Kyte has straps at the bottom of the pack for a sleeping pad. Even if I could fit my pad in the bag or somewhere else, I like to have the extra straps for towels, layers, etc. The pack fits great and makes the load feel lighter."

I love this backpack - it's big enough to go lightweight backpacking but small enough for a day of climbing or hauling camera gear. Fits well, beautiful color, and the durability is great. The only thing is I wish the waist/hip pockets were bigger like my old Osprey backpack so i could fit my iPhone to take photos easily. It would also be better to have the top adjustable so if you really stuff the pack the top still fits on with gear inside it as well. I've used this pack in the Himalayas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, British Columbia. So far it's lasted a couple years going strong. The side access zippers are great. Bomber.

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Got this pack to use for a traveling trip later in the summer & some light backpacking/hiking. Used it last weekend for my first backpacking trip up to the white mountains and it was perfect! It made hiking and camping a breeze.
The top pocket is great for quick access (while the pack is on!) to snacks or a phone. The hip pouches are super comfortable and provide just enough padding that they aren't overwhelming. The side access to the main body is key, makes getting things in the middle really easy! Same as other reviews, I found that the bladder needs to be put in the sleeve before packing up, but I was using a bulky bladder so I'll blame that.
Aside from the very minor issues I had, this pack got me to fall in love with backpacking and I can't wait to put it through the ringer this summer!

          Traveling RTW

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is my third backpacking backpack. I traveled with a Columbia 50 L pack during my 6 month stint around the world, but loaned it to my sister who never returned it. That pack was great - but had some flaws. These flaws were addressed in my purchase of the Osprey 46L Kyte pack.

It fit as a carry-on in all my international flights. Local flights I had to check it in. The hip belt has great easy access to essentials. The top loading opening and front opening make it easy to access your stuff. The material is very stretchy and i was able to push several space bags into it. I fit about 10kgs of stuff into it, and I only felt tired once, when i had to run from the International terminal to the Domestic terminal at LAX. The straps are very supportive and the weight bearing helps distribute it throughout your hips and shoulders.

One small negative is that the cinch at the top is very difficult to grip and it seems like a huge nuisance to use your fingers to pick out the strings to loosen. I might be loosening it incorrectly, but i haven't figured out a better way to navigate loosening the top opening.

I'm going on a hut trip in two weekends and will be testing out the pack then as well. Can't wait!

Also, many thanks to the Backcountry customer service representatives for their supreme help in getting my pack to me in time for my trip!

          Update (12/14/16)

I took this baby on a backcountry hut trip in Breckenridge, CO. Cross-country skied 7 miles each way to a hut at Boreas pass. I'm not a terribly efficient xc skiier, so it took awhile to get to our destination. My shoulders were pretty sore at the end of it, but I fixed most of that by restuffing my pack so the bulk of the weight was to sit at the bottom, tightening the hip belt above my hips, and tightening some of the other straps. The back panel helped my sweaty-self aerate and the rain cover helped keep my pack clean and dry on our hike back in the snow storm. I only went for the weekend, but had plenty of room for maybe another day's worth of provisions. Great pack!

          Hey Candice,

Thank you for the review. The cinch at the top is an easy one: just grab the tab and pull out - it should happen easily! Please reach out to me again if I can help further!

          Thank you again,

          Osprey Rep

          Perfect Weekend Pack

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I maybe had my eye on this pack for a few months before someone finally noticed and gifted it to me! I LOVE THIS PACK. It's perfect for weekend trips (camping, backpacking, or otherwise) or as a carry-on bag for longer trips. I had it packed for an overnight down the Narrows before we were flooded out, but it was incredibly easy to access everything I needed to rearrange my pack for a camping trip instead. I am not a fan of the zero-gravity packs from Osprey and was nervous about a different Osprey pack, but this one fit like a glove. I highly recommend this pack, but that also might be because the black/blue coloring is gorgeous.

          Great so far

I bought this for my girlfriend to take on a backpacking trip through Europe. It's a great size and fit and and all the straps pack it down to make it a larger bag that will still fit European carry-on sizes.

            Great Pack!

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I used this pack for a two-week trip to the Philippines at the end of May. The top pocket is great for easy access to snacks, ear buds, etc. The straps are very comfortable, especially the hip belt because I overpacked a little and my pack got heavy and would tighten that up to put the weight on my hips. I would say when your pack is filled, the bladder doesn't fit well and is uncomfortable against your back. Other than that the pack was great. I did use some Eagle Creek Stuff sacks in there to keep my clothes organized and packing a little easier! I used this for a carry on and it fit well in the overhead storage on all planes, even smaller ones we used to go to other islands.

            Lady Pack for Life!

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

There are so many great technical reviews on this pack already so I will just let you all know how amazing, durable, lady-friendly, and comfortable this pack is. It's my go to day pack and my multi day pack when I'm packing lighter. I truly cannot give one negative thing about this pack just because it has been with me through so much and has lasted beautifully over that time. Please consider this pack when you are looking for your next day or multi day pack!

            Awesome pack, great size!

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I really chose this pack due to it being for women and the size of it. I really did not want to get above 50L, and at 46L this pack is perfect! I have taken my pack into Yellowstone, the Superior Hiking trail, on airplanes, the list is endless! I really do enjoy this pack. I have found a flaw with a design feature. If you plan on having a water sack with a hose attached be prepared to be slightly uncomfortable. The pack will stick out into your back, especially where the hose is connected to the sack. Also, if you have your pack filled with stuff there is no way of getting the sack out to refill or putting the sack back in. While I don't think it is a deal breaker, I do find it quite annoying. My friend has a 50L viva and does not have this problem, but her compartment to fit her sleeping bag in is impossible. The bonus with this pack is that it comes with a rain-fly and has its own compartment so it never gets lost or damaged by stuff in your pack. The color of my rain-fly is red, I have a green pack and I think it kind of clashes but it still works. Overall, I love my pack. This pack can carry enough stuff to get you though a week if packed correctly, so I wouldn't rule it out as just a weekend pack.

            Awesome pack, great size!

            Great pack!

            • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a wonderful backpack for traveling or a short (2-5 day) backpacking trip. I took this pack on a 3 week trip to Thailand and a couple of backpacking treks in California. I also let my friend borrow this for her trip to South America, and she loved it as well. It has many useful pockets and compartments to store different items and tools. The material and zippers are made with great quality and will last for a long time. The hip belt fit comfortably around my waist, and the back mesh provided good ventilation between my back and the backpack. If you're looking for a quality backpack for traveling/backpacking, then this is the one to get! I love Osprey backpacks so much that I'm planning on getting the Ariel 65 or 75 in the near future for longer trips.... can't wait!

            Great pack!

            Great pack, not for me

            • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I purchased this pack along with the Osprey Tempest to compare the two. In the end I decided to go with the tempest but it was a close call.

This pack has nice thick shoulder and waist straps that will keep you comfortable when you are carrying a lot of gear.

This pack is great and has so many awesome features. In the end it was a bit more than what I was looking for and I decided to go with the more minimalist tempest.

Not for my body, but an amazing pack!

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This pack traveled with me around the world, and it rocked my world. I cannot say, however, that I was happy every second of it....Nothing to do with the pack itself though, just make sure to weight a your bag and walk around before you leave on your expedition!

Other than poor weight distribution on my wonky body, this pack was absolutely incredible. I used it for a backpacking expedition through Europe (SUMMER) and it proved to be everything I needed, and more! The pockets on the side were awesome to store toiletries, snacks, sweaters, swimsuits, pants, really whatever your heart desires- they're pretty huge! The internal cavity is awesome, especially with the option to separate into two separate sections (I wasn't using a sleeping bag, so it allowed for easier organizing.)

The top pockets are also super convenient for things that you need to access easily, and it is a dual compartment, the top providing quite a bit of space!

The hip belt itself was really comfortable, and the little pockets on it were perfect for a phone and passport. I will definitely be sorry to say goodbye to this bag :(

            5'8, 125- S/M was great

            Love it!

            • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This pack is perfect for shorter trips! There's enough room for my Marmot Trestles sleeping bag in the lower compartment and a couple days clothes up top. I wouldn't say that this will carry more than a weekend's worth of supplies unless you pack ultralight and then you could likely get a week's worth of supplies stuffed in.

I love the fit of the pack on me as well. Super comfortable and even stuffed full, I could tell the back wasn't going to get sweaty while hiking due to the mesh material.

All of the different pockets are really nice! Lots of nooks and crannies for various items that you'll need throughout your hike.

            Love it!
