Take only what you need to survive.

Two-day summit bids and quick overnighters through desert canyons don't require a lot of gear, so pack light and move fast with the Osprey Kestrel 48 Backpack. The Kestrel's LightWire frame and Airscape backpanel comfortably support loads up to 40 lbs, making it ideal for two-day backpacking trips, while its feature-rich design lets you carry just about any piece of gear you might need to safely reach your objective. Two daisy chain gear loops run down the front of the pack, and the side is fitted with Osprey's Stow-on-the-Go trekking pole loops, so you can quickly free your hands up when you need to do a little third-class scrambling to gain the summit. Osprey also attached an integrated rain cover, so you won't have to hide under a tree if it starts rain when you're out on the trail, and the external hydration sleeve accepts a three-liter bladder (sold separately) for quick, on-trail hydration.

    Mini Backpacking Trip Goals

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 6'
    • Weight: 165lbs

I have always taken 60L packs out on backpacking trips that are longer than 3 days... but this summer I decided to downsize and make things more efficient. This Osprey pack was great for backpacking all over Canada and Alaska this summer! I even somehow managed to fit a bear canister with all of my other gear inside. After multiple weeks of hiking/camping with this pack, it will continue to be my go-to day pack and backpacking sack for up for five days.

    Durable and Versatile

This was my first *real* backpacking bag after making the leap from a casual car camper to a semi-serious adventurer and I'm still using it years later. There are hardly any signs of wear, even after many, many uses, including a week-long rafting trip in the Grand Canyon. That particular trip concluded with an 8 mile hike out of the canyon. The pack's numerous pockets and compartments ensured I could carry a week's worth of stuff yet was supportive enough on my back that I didn't feel terribly fatigued from lugging it all out. For anyone looking for a good, all-purpose pack with which they can easily fit their tent, sleeping bag, cookware, clothes and any other necessities, this bag will work great for you.

      My favorite pack!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used this pack to do everything from extended backpacking trips, traveling, long approaches for climbing, & mountaineering. This pack is light weight, durable, has a ton of pockets & has the ability to suit your every desire. I highly recommend this pack to anyone who is weight conscious and wants a durable pack!

This is my go to pack , if its a weekend camping trip, strapped to the back of my kayak, bouncing around the bed of my truck, or my carry on for a flight this bag does it all. I love it! all the pockets on the hood and the sides work well to organize everything, the bottom zipper part for a sleeping bag works will for storing a pair shoes as well.

My only issue is the front mesh, granted i've had the bag now for a few years and now have multiple patches to repair the rips in the mesh. Not sure if the mesh front is covered by Ospreys warranty, if it is I think I'll hold on to it for a little while longer, Id hate to get a replacement since this bag has been with me on three continents , countless countries and states and god knows how many weekend trips.

      Worth every penny!

      Made for a Happier Adventure

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My fiance ordered this backpack in Dragon Red for our two week trip to Europe and it was the best choice ever. He never complained about a sore back after carrying it for six plus hours in Hallstatt, Austria. When I would offer to wear it and relieve him, he would refuse, telling me that he didn't notice it there because it was comfortably positioned. We were both able to enjoy our trip and do more because of it.

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Used it to hike some of Shenendoah so far, with big future plans. This bag is excellent, carried everything I needed and distributed weight extremely well. My only complaint so far is that there are very few built-in small pockets for organization, but that could be taken care of by some creative situation while loading up. Definitely recomended.

The one pack to do it all!!!!!!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I got this pack the night before my trip. Iv always lived by ospreys I have 3 others to for skiing and one for biking out here and Colorado and of course this has been nothing But amazing I'm a hammock/bivy camper so this pack works wonders I can easily do a week or week and a half with this pack when hammock camping a couple of my friends have tents and use the sleeping pad holder for them and a side pocket for there pad. I can fit my sleeping bag and hammock in the sleeping bag compartment at the bottom of the pack. My only complaint about my order is I didn't get a goat sticker and Ontrac shipping in the west is the worst please stop using them! but the pack is awesome I'm using it as a carry on at dia right now! Super nice pack worth the buy!!!

The one pack to do it all!!!!!!

How big is the sleeping bag compartment in this pack?

Susan, I am sorry for the delay!!

I do not have the pack in front of me, but can you tell me how big your bag is? What size compression sack are you using? I can dig in more after I hear back!

Does kestrel 48 meet size requirements for carry on..air Canada (9x15.5x21.5 inches )and Lufthansa(22x16x9 inches)

Hi Kay, The dimesions of this pack are [S/M] 26 x 13 x 13 in, [M/L] 28 x 13 x 13 in, so it looks like it is going to be a little big to meet those carry on requirements. If you want to give me a shout we can look at some other options that might fit your needs better. - Matthew Pizza - Expert Gearhead
