Merino Windbreaker Jacket

Combining the unique performance properties of merino wool with trusted outdoor technologies, the Ortovox Merino Windbreaker Jacket will keep you comfortably shielded from the wind on blustery hikes and climbs. Its durable yet ultralight fabric is made with a blend of merino wool and nylon, which delivers reliable windproof performance in alpine environments while maintaining a comfortable internal climate, a soft next-to-skin feel, and moisture-wicking performance as you sweat on steep ascents and rugged climbs. A DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating provides water-resistant protection against light rain when you're out in grey and drizzly weather, and the snug elastic hood, cuffs, and hem ensure that you've got total coverage from chilly winds. Plus, when blue skies and gentle breezes return you can stuff the entire jacket into its own chest pocket and keep it in your pack until howling mountain winds find you again.

Nice Jacket, strange fit in armholes

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Fit:

Feels like excellent quality out of the box. I got the Large (5'7", 150 lbs) and the fit isn't perfect, the armholes/armpit area is really constricting. At first I thought it was tight across the chest which surprised me because I'm not large chested but after wearing it while driving I realized it was bunching up under my armpits and it seems the arm holes just aren't positioned in the proper place, or they're not deep enough, making for a sweaty and uncomfortable experience. (If you look closely at the two pictures in the reviews from the women on Ortovox's team, you can see the bunching (armpit wedgie?) in their armpits also, so its not just me) Too bad, I love the feel of the fabric and the warmth to weight ratio.. I like the idea of a super warm and packable outer layer, but I don't if I'll be able to get over the weird fit.

Breathable, soft, perfect fall piece.

Full disclosure, I'm on the ORTOVOX athlete team so they gifted me this layer. That said: I can'™t recommend this thing highly enough. I'™ve worn it on everything from summer ski tours to crisp fall cragging days, and love how it blocks the wind but still lets me breathe. I'm really stoked that windbreakers are no longer synonymous with being inside a sweaty shell. As a bonus, the chest pocket perfectly fits a phone, the color options are all rad, and it stuffs down to about the size of a single sock.

It's Wool?!!!

This jacket doesn't even make sense to my brain... It's windbreaker made from more than 50% wool making it so comfortable against my skin and super moisture wicking! It looks sharp and performs super well. I stuff it into it's pocket and bring it along to every crag, trail run, and spring-time ski tour. As far as the fit goes, I usually wear medium in Ortovox jackets but I wanted a more athletic fit for this piece and got a small instead. It's a little snug across my shoulders but I like the trimmer fit since I am rarely wearing anything more than a t-shirt underneath. As a member of the Ortovox team I was given this product to test and use.
