    Prepping for Chamonix to Zermatt.

The Haute Route is quite possibly the most popular European ski tour, and while the Ortovox Haute Route 32 Backpack isn't large enough for a weeklong tour, it will certainly help you train by carrying all the gear you need for full days in the backcountry. Like all backcountry backpacks, the Haute Route features a separate compartment specifically designed for avalanche safety gear like probes and shovels. Unlike most backpacks, the Haute has an O-Flex back panel that moves with you as you skin, boot pack, and drop down wicked chutes.

The Haute Route carries ice axes, snowshoes, ski poles, snowboards, and skis diagonally or at an A-frame. Front and rear access points to the main compartment allow for easy access to gear with skis strapped to the pack. The helmet net is stowable when you're skiing down, and the hip pocket stores small essentials like compasses or energy gels. Ortovox made the Haute hydration compatible, with a sleeve for the reservoir and a port for the reservoir's tube.

Two seasons so far and loving it!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my everyday pack for teaching avalanche courses in the Northeast. 32L can seem tight for full day tours but I save a lot of space by carrying high end gear/clothing. With careful planning I carry a full avalanche kit, bivy sack, group first aid kit, etc. The dedicated avalanche tool pocket easily holds my shovel, probe, and snow saw. The full panel back access makes organization and retrieval of extra gloves, goggles, climbing skins, etc super quick and simple. The fit is great for my 5'9", 180 lb build. I am a full time mountain guide and Ortovox Ambassador so I was given this pack to test and use.

Great until haul loop failed after 10 da

I looked at a lot of packs and this was the best. It carries extremely well whether with a relatively light load or a long day at -5 degrees with extra layers and 2 liters of water. Things I like include the helmet carrier that can be stowed, the large goggle pocket that holds hat and a snack plus goggles with room to spare and the decent sized waist belt pocket and gear loop. You can rig it to carry a rope, 2 ice axes and more but you if you don't need it, there are not a lot of excess hanging straps.

BUT...After 10 days of regular use, the haul loop/handle tore. See attached photo. I am waiting to see how this product defect is handled to see if this review goes back to 5 stars

      too small

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It is 32L split between multiple compartments. The main compartment is too small to hold all the gear I need for a day tour. Not sure, whats the deal with the back entry. Zipper is harder to open since the material around it gets in a way. When I open it, my stuff sprinkles all around and snow gets in. Also, the fit is funny. Other then that it is a very good looking pack. People always ask if its an airbag.

      too small

      Best ski pack

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I think by far this is the best Ski pack I have owned. It is just the right size where it is not too big for a day at the resort, and smartly designed for all your essentials for a day in the backcountry. Well made and stylish. I love this pack.

      I wish I liked it

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This pack may be 5 stars for other people but not for me. I am 6' 210 lbs with a big athletic build for reference. I also think I have longer legs and shorter torso which may be why I don't like this pack.

I bought this pack after running out of room with my Osprey Kode 22. My BC kit was getting larger and I needed a 30+ liter backpack to hold a snow study kit, crampons, puffy, skins without bursting at the seems.

      Dislikes:
-Lots of pockets but none of them were just right. Like i usually keep sandwiches in the zippered hip pocket with my Kode, but not with this. It's a really small hip pocket.
-I always ski with a bladder and on this pack the tube for the bladder goes through the main storage compartment where as on my Kode it went through the shoulder strap. It's really odd and I can't get used to it.
-The fit is just not right for me. with my Kode I never felt the weight of the pack it fit me so well. I feel the weight on this pack.
-When I'm carrying my skis up a boot pack, the chest strap is so high on my chest it feels like its strangling me.

-The construction is amazing. everything is high quality. I especially like the zippers and the padding on the back.
-It packs really well and the shape doesn't become bulbous. It's very neat and tidy. very pro.
-It looks amazing. It's a really nice looking pack.

overall 3 stars but for others it may be 5. Just didn't work me.

      Look pro fresh!

This pack is awesome, it's my first rear access. Skins fit in with just one fold, everything is easily accessible. Simple, elegant, light, low profile, it's a great day pack.
