Only the finest.

When you spend long days in the backcountry hustling up skintracks in search of pow, you can't have some sticky, crinkly shell making you feel like you're wrapped up in a plastic bag. The Ortovox Guardian Shell Pant provides the waterproof, windproof protection you've come to expect from touring outerwear, but they also treat your legs to a buttery soft surprise—a 100% merino wool liner that wicks moisture away from your body while you climb. This year, the Guardian is considerably lighter and has flatter seams, so both you and the pants will last longer on ascents and descents. A plethora of pockets keep ski day goodies close at hand, so your lip balm, ski straps, and energy bars are never out of reach.

My favorite ski shells

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large
  • Height: 5'6"
  • Weight: 145lbs

These are the perfect weight (the wool is lightly insulating, but they're mainly just a shell), and the fit is AMAZING! The high cut at the waist keeps the snow and chilly winds out (even on a faceshot powder day!!!), and they are roomy down the legs which fitting my "strong" legs great! With the roomy legs and high waist, these are hands-down the most comfortable ski pants I've ever owned. The side vents are great on the uphills, and they work equally well in-bounds as they do in the backcountry. I am a member of the Ortovox team and have been given this product to test and use.

The best hard shell pant.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Small
  • Height: 5'9"
  • Weight: 135lbs

For reals, these are the most comfortable hard shell pants out there. They are incredibly breathable. Though I prefer to ski tour in soft-shells, I'll take these pants out on a particularly cold day and they still breath incredibly well during high output activity. I love the high waist feature-- makes for a perfect fit, especially for those of us with ski thighs. I don't think I'll ever actually be able to wear these pants out. I've had them for three seasons now and they still look great!
I originally got a size medium but had to return them for a size small because they were too baggy around the waist. If you're on the fence between two sizes like I was, I would size down. In other Ortovox pants I wear a medium. As a member of the Ortovox team I was given this product to test and use.

Flattering and Comfortable

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium
  • Height: 5'5"
  • Weight: 155lbs

First pair of Ortovox and so far am extremely impressed. I have athletic legs and a small waist so was tough to find a pair of pants that were baggy but not going to fall off me. The high waistband on these pants are awesome and the fit on the leg is perfect. They are warm without being ridiculously insulated and the color is soo cool! Can't wait to try them out in Wyoming this year!!

Like bibs without the straps

  • Fit: True to size

The Ortovox Guardian Shell Pant replaced my wife's long-time Spyder's. After trying a number of different pants, she found that these had the best fit due to the high waist and large, easily adjustable velcros. It makes it easy to tighten the pants around your waist in a position that's high enough so that snow doesn't get in even when doing somersaults through deep powder.

The lower cuffs are baggy to fit readily over boots, but they still look good. There are also large, readily accessed pockets.

Functionally, they are everything you'd expect from Ortovox -- extremely waterproof! There is also a very thin wool lining that makes them more comfortable against the skin than Goretex, but it's not enough to add much insulation (which is good for touring!).

Best Ski Pants I've Owned

Man - where to start? The cut is amazing! They're roomy enough for my "powerful" thighs, but slim enough so it doesn't feel like they're billowing around you as you ski. The high cut not only keeps the snow out, but it gives my hips full flexibility while I ski and hike. Speaking of hiking, I use these both at the resort and in the backcountry - side zips keep me ventilated on the ups. I hope to use these for a long time...

Technical Pants with POCKETS!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: L
  • Height: 5'4"
  • Weight: 145lbs

I am a big fan of cargo pants. Yes, I will admit it, I am a child of the 90's. These pants have room for my Kinko gloves and then some, which is something so many womens pants lack! They go up really high, which is cool if you're a fan of skiing deep snow in sketchy terrain, and they zip into the
Guardian shell jacket, which is perfect, because let's be honest, we all take a tumble or two from time to time... The fabric in the Guardian line is amazing-it breathes like nothing else, yet seems to repel water like a champ. Two thumbs up
