Emphasizing harmonious organization and protection for demanding tours, the Ortovox Free Rider 26L Backpack carries everything you need for staying safe in the backcountry, all while offering built-in padding to dampen the harsh consequences of falling. This 26-liter pack is sized just right for spending multiple hours in the backcountry, whether you're lapping your favorite tree stash or rigorously breaking trail on a dawn patrol session.
Ortovox uses viscoelastic pads that disperse crushing impacts for an extra degree of safety, should you take a nasty spill in the trees or tomahawk down steep terrain. These pads remain pliable in the cold, so you won't be restricted when you're ripping soulful turns and picking up speed down steep terrain. Best of all, the pads withstand multiple successive impacts, meaning you won't have to replace the pack after tumbling down the mountain.
Seeing it's destined for backcountry terrain, the Free Rider 26L Pack features a zippered front compartment that organizes your collapsible shovel and probe within quick reach, so you can access your snow safety tools within mere seconds during an emergency scenario. For additional storage, there's a zippered top compartment that's ideal for stashing extra base layers, gloves, goggles, or even a compact puffy. Additionally, you'll find convenient features such as multi-configuration ski and snowboard carry, ice axe/trekking pole attachment loops, deployable helmet carry, and hydration tube routing through the shoulder strap.

Can?t say enough about this pack. I don?t typically post reviews, but I?ve had two friends tell me that I should let people know how great this pack is. My main uses are for early morning ski resort skinning/hikes and also for all-day use on the chair lifts, so I?m not putting the most technical capabilities to the test, but it?s a great design for these situations. I?m certain it would also rise to the challenge in the backcountry. Highlights from my experience: -Full zip back access allows easy access to main compartment and packing -26 L is a nice size in that I can comfortably carry extra layers for several people, water, snacks, etc -Velcro waist belt is very comfortable while skiing and makes on/off quick for chair lift situations (without removing gloves) -Gear straps stow or bundle neatly to stay out of the way when not in use -Fit is great (I?m 6?) and it feels snug and low-profile, even when fully packed. I have let others try to wear it for a run and they actually didn?t want to give it up! -It looks great too I?ve used it for a light-weight skinning trip and also for a fully-loaded hike carrying a snowboard, and it felt like the perfect pack for both situations. Kudos to Ortovox for putting so much thought into the design and features. Highly recommended if you?re looking for a pack of this size.
