Helping you stay on the surface during an unexpected slide, the Ortovox Ascent 38L Avabag Kit is a practical addition to your backcountry safety toolkit. Designed for demanding adventures in the backcountry, this fully-featured pack has a smaller frame to comfortably fit women's backs. The Avabag system itself is impressively light and compact, and has an unlimited activation training feature so you can practice deploying the bag without the cartridge, meaning you'll be better prepared in an emergency situation. The glove-friendly handle is easy to pull whether you're left or right-handed, and a safety leg strap ensures the pack doesn't pull up over your neck when the system is deployed.
Besides boasting an avalanche airbag, the pack has the space and features for long ski tours and multi-day trips in the mountains. Its full 38-liter capacity offers enough space for a down jacket, extra layers, food, water, first aid kit—and more—while three internal pockets keep everything organized and a circumferential zipper means anything in the pack is within easy reach. A designated external compartment for your avalanche safety gear allows easy access to your shovel and probe in an emergency. On more demanding tours, your rope, ice axe, and other gear can be fixed to the outside of the pack, and when the terrain requires a boot pack the diagonal ski and snowboard carry reliably holds your ride of choice.
With all this space for gear, you'd hope that the pack can distribute the weight evenly so your back and shoulders stay comfortable on long days in the backcountry. Ortovox doesn’t disappoint. The Ascent 38L has a soft 3D foam back system and padded, adjustable shoulder straps for reinforced comfort. A wide hip belt evenly disperses the load across your hips to reduce strain on your back so you can tackle huge days of elevation gain and steep, technical lines.

I returned this before using it. It's very nicely designed, light, well made. The features cover everything essential without excessive add-ons. The main body unzips like a duffel bag, seems like it would be a nice feature while packing. The description says there's stowable helmet carry, but I wasn't able to figure that out. The pack is too big for me (5' 4"), as is every other avy airbag pack I've tried... If you're tall enough, or have enough torso, seems like it would be great!
