Ascent 22 Avabag Backpack

You had your fun indulging in sinfully delicious, lift-accessed powder shots all morning, but now that the resort is chewed up it's time to head to the backside to milk a little more fresh snow from this week's storm. For backside missions and quick ski tours, Ortovox created the Ascent 22 Avabag backpack. This version is compatible with Ortovox's Avabag airbag system, but it is not included.

Built to carry just the essentials, this technical ski pack keeps your load light so you can knock out laps in record time. The Ascent 22 is small and low-profile, so you won't mind riding with it in the resort, and it features a ski and snowboard carry when you're ready to take the direct route and head up a quick booter. The abrasion-resistant nylon material can handle getting tossed around amidst all of your rowdiness in the mountains, and the circular zipper gives you quick access to the main compartment where you've got your carefully selected items stashed away. While this definitely isn't the pack you'll take on long tours or overnight missions, it's a great option for speedy dawn patrol laps or half-day adventures.

The best for fast laps!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I have owned or have been issued most of the major airbag systems on the market. At work I?ve used Black Diamond Jetforce airbags, and personally owned the BCA Float series, Mammut Light and Ultralight, and now I have owned and used the entire line of Ortovox Ascent Avabag airbags. I feel that Ortovox has done the best job at balancing light weight, with necessary features to have a safe and comfortable day in the backcountry. The packs fit and carry well, they are organized but not cluttered. Ortovox Avabags are only minimally heavier (if at all) than the lightest most stripped-down options, which in my experience are fussy and don?t carry as well. The Ascent 22 Avabag is the option I grab when I?m looking to move fast with minimal equipment. This is my pack for days when I?ll be making multiple laps in an area and skiing powder. I have used this pack at times to make observations and dig snow pits and have easily fit my snow study kit and additional gloves and layers I prefer when spending time in a pit. On a few technical missions, I?ve been able to fit a lightweight rope and compact harness for lines involving rappels. The Ascent 30 is likely the most versatile pack in the line. With enough volume for a long day of skiing technical lines involving ropes, ice axes, etc, or if I just want to bring extra layers and a really big lunch, the Ascent 30 is the Avabag I go to when I?m carrying quite a bit more gear. In addition to using this for big days, this is also my preferred pack when doing avalanche control work at the resort. This is the Avabag that I believe most people will prefer. It provides the best balance of volume, weight, and features of any airbag currently on the market in my opinion. The Ascent 40 Avabag is the one I grab for overnight and hut trips where I?ll be carrying more gear than my standard ski touring, or ski mountaineering kits. It has ample volume for this type of endeavor but doesn?t gain much weight over the Ascent 30 Avabag and carries these types of loads exceptionally well. I?ve also used this airbag for avalanche control work, but always end up carrying extra bombs as my partners seem to run out of room in their packs and make me carry the extra. I hope this run down of the Ortovox Ascent Avabags helps someone make a decision as to which pack to go with. You absolutely cannot go wrong with the Ortovox Avabag system. *I am a member of the Ortovox North American Team, a professional ski patroller at Powder Mountain and paid observer for the Utah Avalanche Center. I received this product to test and use from Ortovox.
