    Enlighten your feet.

Northwave built the Nirvana MTB Shoe as the ideal piece of footwear for hardcore trail riders who demand both efficiency and comfort. Taking cues from the race-proven Extreme Tech, it tailors the formula for use off the race track with a slightly more forgiving carbon fiber sole, and a beefed-up upper that’s built for abuse.

The Nirvana is built on Northwave’s Speedlight 3D carbon fiber sole. It has a higher nylon content than the Ultralight sole found on the Extreme Tech shoe, which adds a degree of flex and enhances comfort for long rides. In other words, it’s perfect when you want the efficiency of a race shoe, but you need a more forgiving setup for your trail rides. The trail-oriented focus of the Nirvana is reinforced when looking at the upper, which is built from a blend of breathable microfiber, and durable polyurethane. It’s augmented with Super Shield panels at the toe, side, and heel of the foot, which adds significant durability against trailside debris.

Foot retention is handled by two hook-and-loop straps at the forefoot, which allows for fine tuning the fit over the course of a ride—essential if your feet start to swell. And the upper closure is Northwave’s SLW2, or second generation Speed Lace Winch. This click wheel provides added security, to combat efficiency-robbing heel lift. The Performance Pro footbed uses a blend of supportive EVA and microfiber to cradle your feet throughout the duration of your ride.

The Northwave Nirvana MTB Shoe is available in 18 sizes, from 37, to 47, with half sizes between 39 and 46, and in the colors Black/fluo green, and Black/white/red.

    Initial Impressions

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I bought these because they were on sale...because who pays full price these days!?

I received these today and right out of the box the fit was awesome and not too tight as expressed by some. I went with a 46 in red and white, because green and black was not available. I'll be riding trails this weekend to decide if they're as rad as they seem on first impression. Unfortunately I live in MN, so testing will be tame, but I look forward to a return trip to my home state of CO to put these through a more in depth test. More to follow.....

A lot of bang for the buck. Super happy with my choice. My main warning is sizing. I normally wear size 11 shoe, 44 European. I bought a 46! They fit perfect. I don't know why. For the record, all of my cycling shoes are a 45 or 46. In my opinion the sizing chart is wrong. Get the right size and you'll love these shoes!

    First pair of MTB Shoes

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 44

I don't have much to compare these to, these are my first pair. I bought mainly based on price and the fact that they had carbon soles and a neat ratchet system. Sizing I agree is a little weird. The chart says that a US 10.5 = 43, but I ended up with a 44 and it fits perfectly...kinda. My heel will not stay put in these shoes. Hiking my bike is a joke. I guess the stiffness of the carbon soles don't help much for hiking, but they feel great while on the move. They look great too. For the price I'm happy with the purchase, I just might try out more pairs next time.

    So Far So Good

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I got these to replace a 10 year old pair of Kameleons that finally fell apart. It's way too early to comment on durability, but they're solid, well made shoes, so I'm hopeful.

While size-for-size, they run smaller than other brands, if you follow Northwave's sizing chart, you should land on the correct size. They are not as wide as other Northwave shoes I've owned. For me, this makes for a slightly crowded toe box, but adds some appreciated snugness in the heel.

The winch works well, particularly as the foam has compressed with use. Because you can't completely "undo" the winch cables, it makes the shoe a bit more difficult to put on, but it's not a deal-breaker. They're pretty light, and are plenty stiff for my needs. They breath well despite the extra protection material. The hard toe and guard are a nice touch, and will certainly come in handy.

    Decent shoe.

If you want to blend in with the crowd, don't buy these shoes. They're bright! If you're more concerned about having a solid shoe with a good closure system, these will meet your needs. I found the shoe to be slightly narrow through the forefoot and was lucky to order one half size larger than the chart suggested. I like the boa closure system and its hold on the mid foot, though the release takes some practice.
