BSB 9 RDO Cyclocross Frameset
The crew here at the office has a soft spot for 'cross. Don't get us wrong, we love road, gravel, and mountain bike racing too, but 'cross racing allows us to shift our gears and prepare for the shorter days and cooler temps with the excitement of competing every weekend with likeminded friends on different courses, all with a pretty chill vibe. Plus, with races only lasting up to an hour, we can sneak in the sufficient time to train and be competitive that’s not as easily afforded as when we want to do well in 4 to 5-hour road events. Niner gets cross too which is why it builds its BSB 9 RDO Frameset, a purpose-built cyclocross machine that takes all of your power and channels it directly to your 33mm tubulars as you deftly drive your machine between the course tape.
BSB or Blood, Sweat, and Beers is its CX mantra, proving that it doesn't take itself all too seriously, meaning you'll sacrifice a little blood, sweat some (at least until the snow begins to fall), and share stories of how the race went with your fellow competitors over a beer or two. Its RDO carbon layup satisfies the cyclocross racer that's after a frameset that's nimble handling on those off-camber slopes, lightweight for suitcasing over the barriers, and has a backbone for sure tracking through the mud and sand and sprinting on the start and finish chute. This model benefits from the updates we saw in 2018 with the move to flat-mount discs and is basically a new colorway so you can look fresh turning quick laps on course.
Carrying Niner's Race Day Optimized moniker, or RDO for short, the BSB 9 RDO uses its unbelievably stiff and lightweight construction for uncompromising acceleration the instant you put power to the pedals. RDO carbon benefits from Niner's Carbon Compaction System (CCS), in which a rigid internal mold yields tighter, more consistent compaction of the carbon layers during the manufacturing process. This high level of control allows Niner's engineers the ability to dial in the exact qualities they're after, namely unrelenting stiffness, high levels of strength, and an impressive ride quality.
Its more aggressive geometry is what makes the BSB 9 RDO different from its gravel-oriented RLT (Road Less Traveled). You'll find the BSB 9 RDO has a steeper head tube, slightly higher bottom bracket, shorter wheelbase, and snappier chainstays than the RLT, giving it quicker handling, a little more pedal clearance, and a racier overall feel. That being said, the frame does clear up to 40mm wide rubber, so if you do need it to pull gravel double duty, it will happily comply. The frame's flatly sculpted tubes enhance the bike's torsional rigidity and also makes it easier on your shoulder on the runups. Front and rear thru-axles provide precise tracking and less possibility of rotor rub with its solid attachment of the axles in the dropouts. The rear brake and derailleurs' housing routes internally which clean up the aesthetics and prevents things from getting snagged when your heart rate is 190BPM and you aren't always riding the best line. Lastly, the frame is compatible with electronic drivetrains, adding a futureproof element to this cyclocross frameset.
