Tent and Gear Solar Proof
High-altitude camps and long trips in sunny climates will wreak havoc on your tents and other gear, so protect them with Nikwax Tent and Gear Solar Proof. This spray-on protector works on all weatherproof textiles and increases water repellency and UV protection. Simply spray evenly on your chosen fabric—using a sponge or brush to spread evenly—then wait a couple minutes and wipe away the excess with a damp cloth. Use about 2fl oz for each square meter of fabric, and be careful to wipe away the excess as it can sometimes alter color.
- A spray-on fabric treatment that adds waterproofing and UV defense
- Convenient protection for wet or dry synthetic materials
- Most effective if used on clean or brand new gear
- Avoid use on backpack straps and cotton materials
- Item #NIK0060

This stuff works
I've been using nikwax for years now on all my gear. After a year of tough weather I started to notice my tents and shells where not reflecting as much moisture as before. After a coat of this stuff I have seen a great improvement

So far so good
Got this to do upkeep on my Marmot Firefly tent and Noah's Ark tarp. Both still going strong, so I guess it's doing the job!

Keepin' it fresh
I have used this for years on all of my tents. It works great on old tents to bring back their water repellency. It is also great to use on your new gear to keep the UV breakdown to a minimum. I recommend using this on all of your tents every year or two depending on use.

I use this regardless
Nikwax makes great products. I put this on all of my tents. It increases any tents waterproofing capability. I have used a lot of waterproofing sprays for camping, hiking, and backpacking such as scotch spray and Nano. I love Nikwax because it has extended the life of my older tents and flys. I'm excited to see how much longer this product is going to increase the life of my gear.

3 year old tent is now brand new
I just applied this product to a few of my prize possessions including my Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3. The solution made my rain fly feel, look, and perform like a brand new fly. I could not be happier with how easy the application was and how awesome it performed on the first trip out in which we had a significant thunderstorm roll through in the night. Give me a shout if you have any question on revitalizing your gear or anything with the Nikwax line. Eric Watford Expert Gearhead 801-736-6397 firstname.lastname@example.org Instagram:@ericwatford

Question. I have a North Face Venture jacket, a REI Half Dome 2 tent, & a REI soft shell jacket. All of which could stand a fresh coat of waterproofing. Will they all require different types of Nikwax or is there one specific style that will work on all three? Thanks in advance
December 18, 2015
Hey Scott, Each Nikwax solution is made to work ideally with different types of fabrics. That being said, Ideally you would use the solution specific to each piece. The TX Direct wash in(http://www.backcountry.com/nikwax-tx-direct-wash-in-waterproof) is a safe bet to use on all three items you speak of.

Solid extra protection
I use it on my all my tents and packs that see a lot of use, and love paying such a small amount to get a lot of extra life out of them. Besides looking like a crazy person creating a tent city in the front yard once a year, nothing to complain about over here!

Used it on my big agness UL3. It seemed to cover well and was easy to apply.

I use it on a big 70L backpack and a small 30L backpack. It make them waterproof (the canvas not the seams) waterproof for one winter...don't know for the UV proof, can't see the difrent

Douse all your gear with this
This will keep the sun off your gear. This keeps it looking fresh from day one! I put this on all my gear as soon as I get it. Protecting my 700$ tent for this minimal amount is a no brainer. You should do it as well!

Worth the $20 bucks!
I cleaned my gear with the Nikwax Tech-Wash before adding this solar proof to my tent. I just set up my tent in my yard and throughly sprayed the proof all over my tent, trying to get it as even as possible, then let it dry in the sun. This stuff really works, it's like a brand new DWR coating on your gear. It's pretty cheap and very easy to apply!
April 25, 2013
I have always been ever so suspect of the whole "just spray it on" type of products but this stuff really works. Plus it is the product that one of the very best tent makers recommend.
March 5, 2013
It's like an invisible UV condom...
Very easy to apply and cheap compared to purchasing new gear.

Keep your gear in top shape
Weather and solar exposure take its tole on camp gear, such as tents and rain flys.Pitching your tent say once a year(if used frequently) in your back yard on a sunny day in the shade.A lightly spray mist of just the tent and let set and dry even over night if need be.Then put the rain fly on and do the same, again leave pitched over night if not thoroughly dry.Backpacks love this stuff too(anything exposed to the elements).

How to Waterproof your gear with Nikwax
August 26, 2011
It works really, really well - all I can say...
May 27, 2011
I recently purchased a laptop pack from backcountry and found out that the fabric absorbs water like a sponge. After adding 2 coats of the solarproof, I took it out back and and put the water hose to it for about a minute. There are few things more beautiful than seeing water bead up and run off like it did. I will have to post a video of it soon to share this gleeful sensation.

How does this differ from TX.Direct?

I have a Nikwax Solarproof 1L and a Mountain Hardwear Hammerhead 2 tent. Exactly how many ml of water and how many ml product (I get confused when they say "parts") do I need to mix to make a solution for my Mountain Hardwear Hammerhead 2 tent
October 6, 2014
My experience with this product has been that there is no mixing required. Ready to go right out of the bottle as you get it.

I just bought a nice, new REI backpacking tent in white. I read one review somewhere that this product will turn white fabrics into a dingy yellow. Is this true? If so, is there another product you recommend for treating a new tent?
September 11, 2014
Of the products I've used, I'd say this stuff is probably the best at what its designed to do. I have not found it to distort color on anything I've used it on, but none of it has been white. The way I would think about is that your white backpacking tent is eventually going to become discolored anyways, so why not make sure that it at least keeps you dry?
August 28, 2014
I still have half a bottle left. Unfortunately, it's 1 mos from the expiration date. Supposing I use it, I know Nikwax cannot guarantee its effectivity. My question would be, would it do any harm to the tent fabric? If it won't I might as well use it, and hope it still works.
August 29, 2014
Hi Hans, Here is Nikwax's official statement on the matter: Nikwax guarantees the performance of all its products for 4 years. Every bottle is marked with the date of manufacture. An older product will not harm your garment. Back to Wayne - Basically all that means is past the expiration date the solution may just lose its potency. It doesn't become dangerous to use. Maybe test it out before you head out and see how it handles.

Planning to use this to double my tents protection. Is it safe to be sprayed on flysheet and tent zippers? or do I have to avoid that?
May 30, 2014
Hey Hans, That is the exact application that this product is made for. Have at it.
May 30, 2014
Wayne, so unlike seam sealers, the solarproof is safe on zippers?

I have a vintage Swiss canvas and leather...
I have a vintage Swiss canvas and leather backpack, two actually. They both are typical Swiss-made, bombproof and built to last forever. I want to clean and restore both the canvas and the leather. Leather is pretty much a no-brainer and there are lots of products but I've read about "never washing canvas" or using only a 50-50 mix of vinegar and water and a medium bristle brush to clean it. Obviously I cannot machine wash something with all that leather. Any suggestions? Tech Wash by hand? Woolite? Maybe then spray on the Nikwax Tent and Solar Proof? These are great packs and I want them to end up water-resistant and clean.

I have brand new backpack but the instructions assume the pack needs to be washed and follows as if the pack is wet. Do i need to rinse the pack before applying the Solarproof or can it be applied to a dry pack.

It does need to be wet.

Will this work to waterproof (water-resistant-ify) ballistic nylon? It's what the guide on the nikwax website led me to for waterproofing backpacks.
February 16, 2011
Jared, this product will add a DWR finish to most materials. It will help it to repel water but most backpacks are not going to be waterproof and you will still get moisture in the seams and zippers. Most people spray the exterior of their packs and then use a weatherproof cover.

Roughly what is the coverage of a 16.9oz bottle ?
December 6, 2010
Hi Ansbug! This size bottle will be sufficient for a 3-4 person tent. A conservative estimate would be approximately 150 square feet per bottle. I hope this helps! You can also contact us at Nikwax at (800) 563-3057 if you have any other questions! Thanks for your question! Stay Dry!

How effective is Nikwax Tent and Gear...
How effective is Nikwax Tent and Gear proofing on tent floors? Blue skies, Findoon
June 22, 2010
It will work, Nylon is Nylon afterall. If it is a large tent and you expect heavy foot traffic with shoes on, you will see it wear down. If you apply this stuff really thick, you will also notice it will be tacky to the touch, so just be careful of that. Not entirely sure what your situation is, but you may not NEED to do this. Does your tent have a footprint? A footprint will cut the condensation down in you tent dramatically. My situation in niner-niner-zero, there's a Plain wrapper sitting at the 57 taking pictures and he's not squaking.
July 4, 2010
Um, this product is meant to protect your gear from damaging UV solar rays. So I dunno why you'd be applying it to your tent floor. If you're looking for something to help seal your tent floor, check for tent floor sealant.

Can this product be sprayed on outdoor...
Can this product be sprayed on outdoor furniture cushions that are 100 per cent polyester.....We bought patio furniture and now have to waterprroof te cushions as they are no idifferent from pillows. no coating on them to prevent moisture or mildew.
June 10, 2010
You could spray this on but it won't prevent moisture or mildew as it is a sun protector. Tents tend to get faded and worn by long days in the hot sun, and this is meant to prevent that (sunscreen for your tent).
July 14, 2010
Here is the product's website: http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/productdetail.php?productid=498&activity= It is a waterproofing and solar blocking product that can be used on a variety of products. I would say so, but I would read what the product's site says.
November 8, 2010
Hi Carol! You absolutely can. This product is a waterproofer that will add a durable water repellant finish AND protect from UV damage. So, treat away! Use any extra on your tent fly, backpack or anything else that spends a lot of time outside! Thanks for your question. Stay Dry!
