Air Zoom Pegasus 36 Trail Running Shoe

A Nike classic takes to the trail with the Air Zoom Pegasus 36 Trail Running Shoe. Offering the same cushioned comfort and all-around performance as always, the Pegasus now gets a trail-ready makeover thanks to the addition of a lugged rubber outsole. You'll have no problem darting through dirt, mud, and rocky trail sections thanks to the unique outsole design and grippy rubber construction, while a set of Zoom Air units in the heel and forefoot ensure a cushioned and responsive ride that'll make rugged trails feel like they're a set of puffy clouds.

Nike knows that on the trail you need to adapt quicker than on the road, which is why they've outfitted this shoe with a few extra features to help you thrive in rugged terrain. The outsole features a flex groove down the center that not only ensures a more smooth and stable ride, but also lets your feet roll and flex how they need to on uneven surfaces. Meanwhile, a wider forefoot lets your toes splay out better for a more natural stride and greater control on the trail. The breathable, perforated mesh upper keeps your feet cooler on warm summer days, and delivers a lockdown fit as you bound over technical trails.

I was expecting these shoes to be a nice hybrid of mixed trail and paved/hard surfaces, which they are. What was a pleasant surprise was finding they work pretty well for me on more technical rocky and rooted trail. I was not expecting this given the taller stack height and higher drop compared to my other shoes (Kiger 5's and Altra Superiors). While they aren't my first choice, they are pretty solid for a lot more conditions than expected.

Awesome Brian, so glad to hear they are working out. I am surprised to hear they are good for rocky trails too- but a pretty good surprise for sure! Thanks for the review!

Really good hybrid road / trail shoe.

This shoe is an effective combo of the new Peg 36 road shoe and some of the new trail technology Nike dropped into the recent Terra Kiger 5 and Wildhorse 5 shoes. The fit feels relatively low volume up front, but the material and elastic anchors for the lacing system allow for some stretch in the forefoot. The heel cup works well, and it seems the whale tail flip above the cup is mostly for looks. Tough overlays surround high-wear areas fore and aft, fitting for a shoe that likes to head into the woods. There's smart usage of modern lamination / welding around the lacing loops which spreads stabilizing forces evenly without hot spots or thread-bunching.. I've used these on the road, on hardpack dirt and in the woods: my sense is that the Peg's 10mm drop is less ideal for highly technical trail situations (this is where the Terra Kiger 5, with its 4mm drop, shines) but is superior to Nike's other trail shoes when the ground is primarily packed dirt or pavement. Given the moderate tread pattern and speedy roll, this shoe is my go-to for all but the most technical or slippery situations.
