T-100L Backpack

Colossal, massive, huge. All these are worthy descriptors of the Mystery Ranch T-100L Backpack, a durable pack that's more than ready to tackle solo thru-hikes, extended treks in the backcountry, and expeditions through the great ranges of the world. It has the same basic silhouette and design as its younger brother, the Terraplane, but is sized to handle your boldest backpacking adventures.

This massive pack has enough room to keep you well-stocked when you know you won't be able to resupply for many days or weeks. The top-loading design helps you pack efficiently and the side-access zipper lets you reach items on the bottom without taking everything else out, which is pretty important when you have enough gear to fill this thing up. Meanwhile, Mystery Ranch has updated it with their Astral Frame. Already used in their military-grade packs, it ensures support and stability so you can carry extremely heavy, bulky loads comfortably over technical terrain. Plus, if you want to head out on a short day hike after you've established base camp, the detachable lid can be equipped with the detachable yoke to create a decent daypack.

Back-saving Mack truck!!

Don’t consider any other pack. Period. I worked as a backpack guide for about 12 years all over the U.S., and went through multiple large volume packs, of different “top” brands, and they ALL hurt and eventually broke. Zippers, clips, and I even had a shoulder strap rip off once. It wasn’t until I ordered Mystery Ranch’s largest pack, that I realized my pain and frustration was unnecessary. The harness system felt like it was custom made for me. The hip belt didn’t pinch or bite. The load never felt like it was a child squirming. It immediately felt like I had been lied to my whole life, And I had finally been told the truth. The sleeping bag system at the bottom is world changing. The accessibility and additional strength was worlds better than the crappy zippers other companies used. The split lid is so convenient, and the top turning into a day pack is great when you are base camping, and want to day hike. The long tube Pockets are essential for rain gear other items you might need quickly, or in a pinch. I 100% believe That if I would’ve started with this pack, I Would’ve saved years of wear and tear on my body. Eventually, I got married, had kids, and settled down a bit. I held onto the pack for a few years, as I loved it so much. Eventually, I couldn’t stand seeing it unused in my closet, so I sold it to a former coworker that was still guiding. As a side, bonus, these packs are like Toyota trucks, they don’t lose value overtime. Because they’re bombproof.

Solid backpack, well constructed, heavy duty

Solid backpack, well constructed, heavy duty Construction and well thought out design and placement of straps to hold needed items. I would have liked this backpack to come in different colors in the future, maybe a Forrest green or any earthy colors.

It's a comfy haul

I've only used it for a weekend snow camp so far but, so far, it's a quality product. It's COMFORTABLE! I can't believe how well this feels on your back. The zippers are solid even in sub-freezing temps. The pull tabs opposite of the zippers on the lid are a really nice touch. They really make for easy open and closing the zippers. The only reason for the 4 star instead of 5 is I think one of the long pockets on the front should be further divided into two pockets giving 3 pockets in front. Overall, If you're a gear hauling pack mule like me, this pack is great.

Excellent Pack for 4 Season Backpacking

I have used this pack for weekend backpacking trips and it has been fantastic. Trips are typically 20+ miles over 2.5 days on challenging trails. Typical full load, including water, is 35lbs for me. I am 6'1", 195lbs have an athletic build. I was able to get this pack to fit very comfortably given the built in adjustability. Pros: Durable. Comfortable to carry. I like that you have the option to create the separate compartment at the bottom for putting things you need easy access to like extra layers of clothes. The long exterior pockets on the back are great for storing things like a puffy jacket, and the top pockets are perfect for snacks and all the small misc. items you don't want buried inside the pack (first aid, multi-tool, chapstick, etc). I have used the pack with a 3L Camelback as well as with 2x 1L Smart bottles in the side pockets. Both work equally well. There is a mesh pocket on the inside for the bladder and a small bungie clip on the should strap to secure the drinking hose. The pack is definitely big, but has been perfect for winter trips where I am bringing my heavy/large sleeping bag, and extra layers of clothes. There are several external straps to tie down things like trekking poles or a foldable sleeping pad. Cons: It's heavy (6.5 lbs), but I would not say it is overly heavy for it's size. I will probably get a smaller/lighter pack for summer backpacking, because this thing will be overkill. I messed around with the "day pack" configuration of the top pockets, and will never use that feature. It is way too time consuming to reconfigure and is not comfortable at all. The compartment for the Camleback bladder is a pain to get to and makes refilling difficult unless the bladder is completely removed from the pack. A couple of very minor things: Wish it had the small pockets on the hip belt and more elastic rings on the straps to manage the excess length when straps are cinched tight.

Great features, but more than needed

Bought this a month ago, but have not used it yet. Look forward to the tent-trek in the Northwestern Wind River Mtns next summer to put the T-100 to the test. As a whole the backpack is enormous and made of high-quality material. It has tremendous features: the lengthy strap to buckle down the entire load inside the main bag; 2 hood pockets, sizable 'bullet' pockets, roomy H2O pockets made of pack material. On the other hand, it contains bells and whistles it needn't have, which w/o them would help reduce weight overall: 1] the sleeping bag divider w/ fastex buckles inside the main bag is completely unnec.; 2] the 2 flaps of pack that clip into a fastex buckle, sitting around and outside the bottom zipper of the main bag seem unnec. Also, there are 2 things missing: a] small straps on both shoulder straps to hold the sipping straw from a reservoir in place; b] a key clip in one of the hood pockets.

FANTASTIC Pack with Short Attachment Straps

I bought this for 8-12 day expeditions into the mountains, and it does well to hold all my gear in conveniently accessible ways. My *only gripe would be how short they made the straps for attaching sleeping pads (since I carry 2 and they barely fit) as well as compression straps (I use them to attach my tent fly and other various things to the sides) It is still a rockstar pack and would highly recommend

Quality product

After one season using this pack I am more than happy with the product. Reasonably comfortable, even with heavy loads. Plenty of room. Good features. Seems very duarble. One thing I would change is the length of the straps that attaches the lid to the pack. If they were a bit longer it could be packed higher.

Big and sturdy

This pack is really big and is erverything I was hoping for. The frame is sturdy and allows me to have a wide range of motion. I am going to be backpacking in the Grand Canyon and will post an update after I return. My two areas of improvement I would suggest is that I could have ordered one in a different color than Black, and a lack of a pocket on the hip belt for storage of chapstick etc...

Straightforward and Dependable.

I work for a Wilderness Therapy company and spend half of my year on the trail. I have warrantied quite a few other packs over the years but have never had to go through the trouble with Mystery Ranch. I have used a 65L pack the last few summers and was so happy with the performance I picked up a 100L for winter and a 35L for use outside of work. Perhaps most importantly they come in all black.

Thoughtful, durable design.

I bought the T-100 Backpack to support winter mountaineering requirements in Northeast portions of the USA. The bag meets the volume needs easily, and its pocket system allows for critical items to be accessible during the day without a full dump of the pack along the trail. The Backpack material is very durable and easily withstands sticks and thorn bush encounters along the trail. My axe, and trekking poles swap places easily on the thoughtful daisy chain with 2 loops at the bottom and my shovel can also be lashed to the system. I have snow shoes strapped to the side of the bag, and am using the diagonal side compression straps to hold them securely. Sleeping bag compartment is very much appreciated, and the hidden sleeping pad straps emerge to bring everything together. My full kit with liquids and food weighs in at about 65 lbs (29.5 kg) and once properly fitted the load floats on my hips and a little on my shoulders nicely.
