Saddle Peak Backpack

Slim and chairlift-friendly, the Mystery Ranch men's Saddle Peak Pack is a great fit for extended backcountry tours as well as deep days at the resort. The specially streamlined avalanche compartment keeps your shovel and probe ready for deployment in case of need. Both a diagonal ski carry and a vertical board carry are optimized for uphill travel—and, speaking of uphill travel—the Saddle Peak is fully compatible with your hydration bladder, so you can keep sipping without stopping on the way up to claim some turns. Plus, the Saddle Peak has a rear-access back panel that allows you to get to your stash without de-rigging your skis.

  • A burly 21L pack for backcountry touring and in-bounds pow days
  • Diagonal ski- and vertical board-carry for hauling your planks
  • Whistled sternum strap lets you raise alarm in an emergency
  • Tough 500D nylon wears well and resists sharp ski-edge abrasion
  • Streamlined pocket stores and organizes shovel and probe
  • Zipper to main compartment is laminated for water protection
  • Back-panel zip lets you access main stow without de-rigging skis

After skiing all season with a ‘make do’ pack, I started shopping for something I could use both inbounds and out. I started by listing the things I didn’t like about the pack I was using. It didn’t fit (too short). It didn’t comfortably carry my avalanche gear. Then I looked for any added ‘bells-and-whistles’. Easily accessible dedicated avalanche-gear storage. Helmet carrier. Finally I looked at the reviews. I’m happy to say that I’m impressed. I highly recommend this pack if what you’re looking for is a well-fitting, chairlift-friendly, well-built day pack that’ll carry your skis/snowboard, avalanche gear and everything you need for a day.

Solid Resort/Side-country Pack

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently used this pack for a long weekend skiing Steamboat resort and the neighboring side-country terrain. I like that it is a slim fit, so you can ride the lift with it on your back no problem. The harness system makes for a great fit that moves well with you body while skiing, it adjusts well to any size body frame, and it is thick enough that I felt like I would have good back protection if I took a tumble. The avy safety pocket is easy to access and easily fits a probe, shovel, and saw. The main compartment is plenty big for some water, food, an extra layer, and a couple other items. The 840D nylon is ultra durable so you don't need to worry about branches or falls ripping up your pack. There is also a nice top pocket for an extra goggle lens, multi-tool, Voile straps, etc. My one gripe with this pack is that this pocket is relatively small and only fits a couple small items. Other small/loose items have to go in the main compartment and can be tricky to fish out of the bottom of the pack. I did not use the helmet carry or the ski carry systems, but they look like good designs and I'm sure they would work well. Overall, a good pack for resort and side country use or a shorter, half day tour. If you want something that is durable and fits well this is a great pack for you.
