Multi-sport water purification.
MSR's Trail Base Gravity Filter System doubles between long-haul backpacking trips and fast-and-light trail runs when frequent water sources don't require you to carry a whole lot of water. When you're backpacking, set the reservoirs up as a gravity-fed purification system by placing the full dirty water reservoir above the clean water reservoir and letting the hollow fiber filter and gravity do the rest. When you just need a quick 20 ounces to get you through your hike or trail run, simply place the hose in a water source and pump the filter into your water bottle to quickly filter out bacteria, protozoa, and particulates.

Perfect design for small rivers and streams!
Worked right out of the box and very easy to use and set up. First trip was a canoe camping trip end of summer where we have very dry conditions, and the first camp spot (ocean not lake) had a known stream but this year was very very dry. Had to hike up and luckily this new system of just placing the end of the hose into the small trickle was camp saving. I had been frustrated in the past with scoop type of filter reservoirs this summer (Jasper also had very light trickles in a lot of streams) so this design is perfect! Having the larger bag to scoop when there are larger flows of water is awesome too.

Quick and easy filtration
Great filter system which offers maximum speed and efficiency when base camping or through hiking. The whole set up doesn't weigh that much so unless you are trying to go ultralight it is easy to bring the entire filter system with you. If you do want to go lighter the option for that is there as well.

Fast, but cap string is
Fast, but cap string is cumbersome and connector on filter falls off spraying water everywhere.

Failed on 4th backcountry trip...
Fantastic product design and size out of the gate, was the envy of mates who were still using pump systems... until the seam opened (not ripped) on the dirty bag at the bottom of the bag rendering the product useless. In addition to the seam opening, the filter flow all but failed after 3 and bit trips following the recommended approach of using source water with low sediment (lots of wet feet as a result). After putting in a quality assurance claim, the response time is 12 weeks!!! Basically my only option is to purchase another water filtration system for upcoming trips as I await a response from MSR. The bags need to be of much higher quality, especially for the price paid and need a more accurate sales pitch (1500L claimed) on the amount of water that can be filtered per cartridge, its probably 20% of that max.

Works quickly on gravity.
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- 2L
Tested it at home on both hand pump and gravity methods, and had no problems. Took it to the field and got water from a small creek without a lot of sediment. I was surprised at how quickly the gravity method filtered 2L of water. Just a couple of minutes. I've filtered about 10L of water total, so perhaps it will slow down over time or if using it with more silty water. Both methods are intuitive and easy to use after reading the instructions. 2L system is light weight and packs fairly small.

Old design was better
I'm super bummed that they got rid of the old system that didn't include a clean bag and didn't require the Trail Shot filter. Most people have existing containers that they favor, and this package requires the purchase of unnecessary and undesirable components. It's unfortunate, because the 2L dirty bladder with its roll top design is the best in the business. I recently lost mine, and I will simply have to go with another brand as this combination doesn't work for me. Too heavy and complicated.

Great for the SHT.
I backpack on the Superior Hiking Trail in Northern Minnesota. Water sources there seem to have a larger percentage of silt than other locations. This system worked very well.

Light weight & versatile water filter.
Bought mainly for the Trail Shot. Haven't used the gravity system, but the filter fills a 32 oz Nalgene in about 30 pumps.

I would not buy this product again
The gravity system works OK, but can be a bit finicky. The trail shot component used alone is useless. The flow rate drops significantly only after about 6 liters. I even purchased a new filter after a couple of backpacking trips... same results with second filter. I'm forced to get a new system.
