Why We Like The Thru-Hiker Mesh House 3

Every ounce packed on thru-hikes that last months must be carefully considered, so needlessly throwing a three-pound tent in your pack when you could opt for single-pound MSR Thru-Hiker Mesh House 3 instead is a no-brainer. Its ultralight design delivers protection from bugs when your thru-hike takes you through the High Sierras on the PCT or through the buggy Blue Ridge Mountains on the Appalachian Trail. A versatile design allows it to be pitched under MSR's Hiker 70 or 100 Wing (sold separately) when you need protection from bugs and rain, and the non-freestanding design means you'll want to bring trekking poles for setup. The Thru-Hiker comes with six MSR Needle stakes, so you can be sure the shelter's secured before you climb in for the night.

Too Small

The thru Hiker 3 is better suited for 2 people. The Thru-Hiker 1 provides approximately 33" width for 1 person, Thru-Hiker 2 provides approximately 26" width per person where as the Thru-Hiker 3 only provides approximately 21" width per person, adding only 14" to the width for an additional person. In my experience, 26-28" is the minimum width for me to be comfortable (depending on side wall slope), so the Thru-Hiker 3 is unrealistic for average adults, but may be doable for some. Quality is as you'd expect for a MSR product.

Well made and spacious

Positives: Build quality is high, zipper runs smoothly, easy to pack and light. Reinforcement ribbon along the long axis allows it to be set up taut, and solid rear wall is nice for putting towards wind/water. Cons: Pricey for a mesh inner, and 15D floor is thin! Consider using a polypro groundsheet to boost longevity.
