    Burly, burly, burly.

Some people wonder why hiking shorts need to be so durable. For those who know the answer, there's the Mountain Khakis Men's Alpine Utility Shorts. These burly shorts are made with super-durable 10.4oz cotton canvas and use triple stitching in all the seams to reduce the chances of a blowout. Alpine Utility Shorts also have a long 11in inseam to make them comfortable while wearing a climbing harness, and their gusseted crotch increases freedom of movement on the trail or the rock.

    If you like Carhartt pants...

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 38
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 225lbs

If you like Carhartt products you'll love these.
They are great, tough shorts that can take the abuse. However, they are thick and don't breath. Great casual short or construction short but not a great hike/bike short.
Four stars because velcro on anything is lame, and the back pockets have velcro tabs.
    Other than that, awesome short!
Fit is relaxed and pretty close to true but I 'd say size up if you're a tweener.
    I will buy again.

    Durable work shorts

Bought these for my boyfriend and this is what he said:
Awesome, durable shorts for outdoor or work use. Perfect length and color.

    Bullet proof

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 36
    • Height: 5'6"

These short pants will last forever. Super thick, super stiff, built like a Sherman tank. I wear 34 but bought 36 because of other users reviews. They are a little loose but not in the hood droopy saggy. I guess I kind of like that. They dress up well and great for long hiking days too. My only small complaint is that the material is so thick it kinda makes my junk sweat. I'd recommend.

    Alpine Utility Shorts

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Overall very happy with these. Great durability with tough material that can stand up to long days on rock. Fits true to size, good length for tall guys. Pockets are well sized. Only thing I would change is the double pocket on the right front, I can't really think of a time I would need two pockets in the same place, and so far it has only led to me checking both of them for where I put my phone / keys. Still, for the durability etc worth the small hassle. Back pockets are velcro for those that care, I don't use them so no comment.

    Great ahorts

These are the best shorts I've ever owned. Very durable, and very comfortable. Love the oversized pockets, and their location, very unique

Used to love these. . .

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Well I used to love these shorts. Had a pair that lasted forever and became really comfortable to wear. I wore them out.

The ones I just bought have been changed. They replaced the button on the rear pocket with velcro. As far as I am concerned, velcro should only be used on three items of clothing: kids light up shoes, diapers, or baseball hats. Clothing designers who use velcro on clothes should have to walk main street wearing only those three articles of clothing.

    go anywhere, do anything

for sure my summer go to. they are tough but super comfortable. They have all the cargo room of cargos but the pockets hold everything in place so much better and they look good doing it!

    Not for hot weather

Well made - high quality material and workmanship. But not advised for hot weather. The material is thick and does not breath freely, which makes me uncomfortably hot. Looking forward to using these in the fall, and spring. But for the rest of the summer I think they are going to be sitting in my drawer.

      Tough and Soft

These shorts are some of the best I have owned. MK is a great brand, and it really shines through in these shorts. Plenty of pockets for all your stowing needs, and just the right length so they are good for the trail and the town. The 10-oz canvas is unstoppable, but the folks at MK made it feel like supple cloth. At first I thought the shorts were a little chunky in the crotch due to the gusset, but I got used to it. I'm wearing a 36 where I am usually a 34, so size up. Looks great with a patagonia friction belt!

        Maybe too sturdy for hiking

I like these shorts for about everything but hiking in hot weather. Unfortunately, that's what I had in mind when I bought them. They are very thick, so they don't breathe very well, take a long time to dry if they get wet, and weigh enough that you can feel them on you. The construction of the shorts really is excellent from a durability standpoint, but the heavy inseams chafed my inner thighs after a couple hours hiking in the heat in them. I prefer lighter shorts even if I sacrifice some durability.

          Awesome as always...

            1. Size up. If you are a 34, get a 36. If you are a 36, get a 38 etc.
            2. The 11" inseam is perfect. I am 6'3" and they sit right at my kneecaps. Do not worry about the shorter inseams offered on the MK web site.
            3. They are just like the pants. The only difference is the Velcro on the double back pockets. Some people have said that it "stabs" them, well they should put on some underwear.
            4. The leg openings are perfect. I have big soccer thighs and there is no problem with the legs being to tight.
            5. The MK shorts seem much lighter than the Alpine Utility pants due to the fact that there is no double knee, so don't worry about feeling to hot or sweaty in them.
Awesome shorts from MK, my new favorite, better than the Prana and Mountain Hardware cotton canvas shorts I own.

I'm a Mountain Khaki fan and these shorts are tough

I have a couple of pairs of Mountain Khaki's and so when I saw these, I wanted a pair. They're great. Tough triple stitching like MK's jeans and khaki pants. Comfortable and solid. I can understand the other comments about the back velcro sealed pockets - it feels like the velcro was an afterthought. The pockets themselves are a great size, but the velcro feels a bit of a cheap solution to keeping them closed.

Despite that, I still think they're perfect. I wear them when it's too hot for the MK pants.

              Quality shorts from Mountain Khakis

After wearing MK Alpine Pants for a couple of seasons I decided to break down and buy some of the shorts. They have the same solid build as the Alpine pants and the same fit. The gusseted is nice for climbing and hiking. My only complaint is that the stash pocket on the side of the right thigh doesn't have a cover so my cell phone falls out regularly when I'm sitting down.

great, just what you'd expect if you've owned the long pants

I was nervous that the pockets would be too short, or the length too short, but it's great. It doesn't look like short shorts, and the pockets are plenty deep just like the long pants so your wallet and cell phone won't fall out in the movie theater. Great quality as usual from MK, no complaints. Note no cargo pockets.

These shorts are both as stylish as they are tough. They have rock solid contruction and feel great! Purchase them with the confidence that you are making a sound investment in a superior pair of shorts.

                    what are these shorts like??

                    Best Answer

Think of a softer lighter version of Carhartts. They're good for cooler days as there are multiple layers of pockets on the front and back of the shorts, so I avoid wearing them when it gets really hot out. I wear these shorts pretty much every day in weather cooler than 75 degrees.

From the image on this site the "granite" color appears to be blue-grey. On other sites it appears to be a more light slate grey color. Can anyone attest what the granite color actually looks like? Thanks

What size is the leg opening on the Shorts with a 38" waist. I prefer a narrower opening because I am not that beefy in the thigh area.

                    I usually wear a size 34 short/pants, but...

I usually wear a size 34 short/pants, but I keep reading how MK has some funky sizing. I'm 6'1" and 170 lbs, not ripped but in decent shape. Any suggestions?

I'm a 32 in Grammicci, but they ride pretty low. My MKs, also a 32, sit a lot tighter. They sit at about the hip bones, whereas the Grammiccis are a bit lower. I'd say if you want them to sit where your normal pants do, get them an inch or two larger.

Would you say the leg openings are generous?...

Would you say the leg openings are generous? I have some thighs and tapered openings don't fit me well...and they look silly. On me and in general. Thanks for the help!

I am in the same boat as you, I wear a 36 normally but in my MK Original Mountain Pants I have to order up a size to a 38, I just ordered a pair of MK ASU's and forgot about ordering up and got the 36, to sum it up, my friend is getting a nice pair of shorts that fit him good, he wears a 34 normally!

Write your question here...Do they run true to waist size? In Some Mountain Khakis short/pants it tis necessary to go up a size, because the waist runs small.
