    Tasted like Thanksgiving in July

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

As a Ranger for from time to time I get to review different products and during my last backpacking trip I rewarded myself for the hike into the campground with Mountain House’s new 2-Serving Homestyle Turkey Dinner Casserole. I’ll admit that at first after reading the description I was a little skeptical, however, I think the best way of describing this meal is that it tastes like Thanksgiving!!

I really enjoyed the combination of turkey, stuffing, vegetable and spices. They really did add up to what I think a true Thanksgiving day meal tastes like. While like any dehydrated meal you have to be good at mixing it, this one is no exception. If you don’t mix it up properly (they suggest at least twice in the directions) you could definitely find yourself with a ball of spice or a piece of stuffing that isn’t fully rehydrated, but that’s easily fixed by mixing it up some more.

As my final thought, I would definitely recommend that anyone looking for a meal that tastes home cooked with little effort, you take this one along with you on your next backpacking trip. As it weights less than 4 oz, you’ll be able to bring quite a few!

    Tasted like Thanksgiving in July

Just like Mom use to make!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Mountain House’s Homestyle Turkey Dinner Casserole was thanksgiving in summer!
As with othe Mountain House freeze-dried pouch meals, I enjoyed the balance of meats, vegetables and other this case...stuffing. Disclaimer: I’m not now, nor ever been a “stuffing” guy...but I thoroughly enjoyed its place in this casserole.
Did it really taste like thanksgiving dinner? It does to me...and transported me back, in thought, to my mother’s Thanksgiving Day meal.
I did receive this meal to test from TheDyrt, but in my recent MH purchase, two more pouches of this Homestyle Turkey Dinner Casserole made the list for an upcoming backcountry trek.

    Ranger Review: Good Stuff!

Gear Review: Mountain House Turkey Dinner How wonderful it was to eat “Thanksgiving Dinner” after a long day and many miles in the desert! This meal really hit the spot! I would recommend letting the meal stand for a bit longer than the 9 minutes total, the veggies were still a bit crunchy. The stuffing and turkey was tasty and I would definitely purchase this for future endeavors. Meal 5 stars!

    Thanksgiving in a pouch!

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - this weekend I tested Mountain House’s Homestyle Turkey Casserole. I’ve been a long time fan of Mountain House and their products, so I was really excited to try the casserole. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, so you bet I was stoked to bring a little bit of that holiday comfort food with me while camping. As always with all Mountain House products, this was so easy to make -- literally as easy as boiling water. Directions were simple as to be expected and the ingredients inside looked like real food. Once I add the water, the smell was phenomenal. Everything rehydrated perfectly and evenly. There were very nice large pieces of turkey, lots of harvest vegetables, and a heaping amount of stuffing. For two people, the serving size was generous and this was a very satisfying/filling dish. While my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this, it’s not one of my favorite Mountain House meals.

      My New Thanksgiving Dinner

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time – on this trip I tested the Mountain House Homestyle Turkey Dinner Casserole. This wasn’t my first freeze dried meal but it was definitely my favorite! While I myself have not started backpacking yet I will be defaulting to the Mountain House meals when I do. Before preparation, the bag weighed about as much as a slice of bread and all it required for prep was some boiling water. This trip was very windy and it was hard to get the water hot enough to boil but once it did I followed the directions to add it in, zip it up, and wait. After 9 minutes (including a half time stir) I opened the bag and it smelled like Thanksgiving.

With it being a 2 serving size I scooped half out into a bowl to share with my husband and I ate mine straight from the bag. I had the better end of the deal, with as windy as it was the bag helped keep the heat in and it was hot until the very last bite. I was really surprised that the bag didn’t burn my hand at all even though we had used boiling water in it 10 minutes prior.

The food itself was very well flavored and needed no additional seasoning. The turkey chunks were moist and you could have fooled me that they weren’t’ freshly carved from an oven roasted turkey. The amount of turkey and veggies to the amount of stuffing was perfect. I definitely didn’t feel like I got shorted on the good stuff.

We opened up a can of cranberry sauce to eat on the side and it felt like a genuine Thanksgiving dinner. I am super impressed by the ease of preparation and how good it was. Maybe I will host Thanksgiving freeze dried style this year!
