Type 2 Fun 3/4-Zip Hooded Jacket - Men's

Excellent design but poor manufacturing

Received this as a Christmas gift two months ago, with the sole purpose of cold weather running/hiking. It’s an amazing layer but after just one trip through the washer according to manufacturers recommendations the breast pocket is falling apart. It appears to be glued, not stitched. Kind of sloppy for a company that I’ve known for the highest quality products for over a decade.

Good micro grid fleece. Very close to my r1 just not as soft. My only major gripe is the hand cuffs are super loose.

Nice Idea, Poor Execution

The idea of a grid fleece pullover with a hood and long arms with thumb loops is fantastic. I think most climbers would love a top like this as a mid layer. Sadly, this is not it. The fit is poor and the fabric is just not right. Too narrow in the shoulders, too wide in the torso, too short in the sleeve length, and too wide in the arm girth. Something about the fabric is not right. You would expect it to have a softness but it is not very soft. For reference I am 6'4" and 175 lbs. I wear a 16x35 shirt and a 41L suit. I bought this in size large. The fit is just not right. Narrow in the shoulders and far too big in the torso. The sleeves are oddly not long enough to use the thumb loops which are a horrible design. It was like this was designed without them and at the last moment this was added as an after thought. Even if the arms were long enough (need to be close to 2" longer) the thumb loops just would be a poor choice. The sleeves are also far too wide in the lower arm as another review mentioned. Raise you arm above your head and this slides down to your elbow. If you have narrow shoulders with 33" arms and a 38" waist this might work but it is not for tall and lean. Then the fabric.....not thick enough, not soft enough. Go back to the design on this. Get it right. With the right fit and fabric this is an item that would be a top seller. Sadly, this is just not it.

The Type 2 is one of the more comfortable fleeces I ever worn. It's extremely soft and seems slightly warmer the Patagonia R1. Also the the thumb holes are extremely comfortable and well placed. I normally wear a large but I like these type of fleece shirts to fit tight so I sized down.

Better than Patagonia IMHO

This fits great for me. I’m barrel chested at 5’8” and I don’t find this too long or restrictive at all. The sleeves and torso fit great to allow for ease of movement while staying close enough for moisture management and just loose enough to be effectively warm. I have only 2 things I wish were better: 1 - I wish the hood zipper came up over the mouth like the R1. That built in gaiter is super useful and keeps your equipment simple. 2 - after about a year of heavy use, the chest pocket de-laminated from its zipper and is now useless. I don’t think it’s a big deal honestly because I never really used it. I’ve since just cut out the pocket material and by extension shaved a few grams off its weight. All in all, this is my favorite technical fleece. I would recommend heartily.

I really liked this hoody! It is perfect for alpine climbing. Similar warmth as the R1, but slightly cheaper. Fabric seems a bit more stretchy. My big complaint is the front pocket. It is glued in place and the glue failed on me after using about 3 times. I went to unzip the pocket and the zipper came right out. Also the pocket doesnt quite fit my phone. MH should sew this piece in and make it slightly bigger.

I really enjoyed trying this on. The build quality was phenomenal, and I could tell this is built to last. Sadly, this hoody feels a bit too tight. I should have realized from the images here, this really hugs the person wearing it. I do enjoy form fitting, but could not do this hoodie personally. If there was a bit more room, would be almost perfect. I loved the thumb loops and the material.

TL;DR: Almost perfect: fix the loose wrist cuffs and make the chest pocket larger, and this would be a PERFECT 5/5, and a serious contender to competitor pieces like the ?Patagucci? R1! FULL REVIEW: A pretty good hoody overall, but requires some improvement to make it a perfect 5/5. It?s not as thick as other hoodies, but I like this for layering purposes. The poly/pro waffle grid fleece is decently warm, definitely cozy, and breathes well too. I like this for a layering piece on cold days or standalone on warmer days. I am 6'3" tall and 180 LBS, so tall and thin, and size Medium fits me great. It?s long enough for taller people, and I love that about this hoody. The fit is athletic with just enough room underneath for a T shirt or your favorite long sleeve base layer (I prefer merino wool base layers), and yet still fits snug enough to throw on top a shell, puffy, or insulated outer jacket if it gets really cold. It looks sharp too, so whether hiking, fishing, rowing, or heading to the local brewery, you?ll look good no matter what the activity. The thumbhole loops are hidden so when not in use, they cannot be seen at all, which is pretty cool, but they?re also not the greatest thumbhole loop design either because of this. It?s a trade off and I?m totally fine with it, as I?d rather have thumbhole loops than no thumbhole loops at all. People love thumbhole loops! And if you're the rare person who doesn't , they can't be seen when not used, so hooray for that. Where this hoody needs improvement: the wrist cuffs are far too large and depending on the size you buy or how thick or thin your wrists are, it will be loose and will slide down over your hand as other reviewers have mentioned. The Medium is okay for me, but if I was a bit heavier and needed to size up to a Large, I would?ve been returning it: when I tried on the Large, the wrist cuffs were way too wide and baggy. I can see a lot of people returning this hoody because the wrist cuffs are too loose (unless you like the look of when your girlfriend wears your clothes and the wrist cuffs extend over her small, cute hands). I?ve also noticed this problem on a lot of other MH pieces such as the Keele lineup. Such a shame, stop making the wrist cuffs so loose MH! A solution here would be to make tighter fitting wrist cuffs with elastic to make it stretchy. I?d rather have a tighter fitting wrist cuff that can stretch over time, than one that is too loose from the start. Lastly, why is the chest pocket so small? It will just fit my iPhone 6S and leave room for one or two other very tiny items, but why not make the chest pocket extend all the way across the chest to give it that much more room? If you look at the images, you can see they designed the chest pocket with this weird angled shape, making the pocket smaller and not a straight rectangle design that extends fully across the chest. This seems silly to me because all it?s doing is making the chest pocket smaller than it could be. Devil?s advocate says what the heck are you storing in your chest pocket that it needs to be so big for? It?s a chest pocket. But still, why make it smaller than it needs to be? I?d recommend buying 2 sizes like I did (M and L. I kept the M), but then you are having to eat the return shipping label cost. So might be better off to try on in store first.

Great fleece

I like the weight of this fleece, stretch, movement, etc. It feels great, and is warm without being too warm. I'm 6'3" 185 lbs and the Large is great, with a bit of room for a baselayer underneath, and not constricting for movement. The only reason it's not 5 stars is that the sleeve openings are just a bit too wide. They bunch up a bit when you layer over them. If they were a bit tighter with some elastic they would be perfect.
