    A backcountry essential.

High loft with high warmth, the Mountain Hardwear Women's Ratio Down Jacket is a great everyday down jacket that can also tag along on your climbing, backcountry skiing, and backpacking trips. Stuffed with 650-fill Q.shield down, the Ratio's down won't loose its loft or insulating properties if it gets wet, and with Mountain Hardwear's Hi-five 30D ripstop nylon, you won't have to baby it when you're out in the field. A soft Velboa lining in the color lets you zip it up all the way without the collar rubbing your chin raw, and center front reverse coil zipper allows for easy adjustments.

    Wrong size, wrong color

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size

This jacket was ordered during the summer, as my daughter will be going to school where winter is much colder than here at home. First, an explanation of the title. She ordered the color/size she desired, but shipment #1 arrived in a different color AND the wrong size. Notified Backcountry, who promptly provided a prepaid return label and shipped out the right color/size. Received the replacement and guess what? Shipment #2 was the same wrong color/size. So much for quality control. Another call and the CSR confirmed an inventory problem. The desired color/size combination was not available. Another return label, another credit.

The only available color in the size desired was not appealing, so she actually tried on the wrong size just in case it was close enough. No luck, but it did reveal that the jacket was probably not going to be as warm as she had hoped. I've had many winter jackets in my lifetime, and there are 3 words that still ring true for true cold-weather gear: bulk is warmth. No matter the quality and filling power of the down/feathers/synthetic fill, the jacket is not going to be really warm if it doesn't have some bulk. This requires both a sufficient quantity of fill, as well as a design and construction which will allow the insulation to provide the maximum amount of dead air space. The Ratio is a quality jacket, but I would not view it as a really warm jacket, by itself. That's hard to tell online, so maybe this review will assist another customer.

Perhaps receiving the wrong size and wrong color was a fortunate mistake.

OK but leaks too much down feathers.

Jacket is warm and comfy but constantly emits white and beige goose down feathers that stick to your clothes (and feel itchy poking through your clothes).

I've been wearing this jacket every day for two weeks.

    Kinda Bummed

I purchased this down jacket last season with high hopes. I didn't get a chance to wear it, so when it started to get cold, I was stoked to try it out! As far as warmth, it works well for a mid-layer. No complaints there. It's the quality that I'm disappointed with. From the moment I took it out of the box it was losing feathers. Like, a lot of feathers. I look like I'm molting every time I wear it. Then I washed it (according to the instructions of course). Before washing, there were no visible marks or stains. When I pulled it out of the dryer and put it on, I noticed giant dark splotches on one sleeve and next to the pocket. There are also random marks on the back now as well. I don't know if I just got a lemon, but I'm really disappointed in the quality of the coat. Some loss of down is expected but I've never had a down jacket that loses as many feathers as this one. As for the mystery stains, I've never had a jacket do this and to say it looks bad is an understatement. Would I recommend this jacket? Probably not.
