Don't let rain put a damper on your plans.

Spitting rains might make your hike a touch more difficult, but a rainy day in the mountains is a heck of a lot better than an afternoon spent glued to your couch. So even when rain's guaranteed, count on the Mountain Hardwear Rainshadow 36 Outdry Backpack to keep all of your essentials protected from the precipitation as you enjoy the misty mountain views. The main compartment is made with Mountain Hardwear's OutDry waterproof membrane to ensure waterproof protection, while the water-resistant, zippered top opening ensures water can't easily seep through the cracks. A quick-access front stash pocket is an ideal spot to store a rain jacket and is equipped with drainage slots so it doesn't hold water when the rain really starts to come down. To assure a comfortable carry, Mountain Hardwear fitted this pack with a padded mesh back panel that sits close to the back and contoured shoulder straps to keep everything comfortable when you're on the move.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Had this pack for over a year and still really like it. I use it almost everyday of the week, mainly for climbing/adventuring and what ever else.
I think the size is great I can fit a pretty fat rack and other gear and strap the rope on the back even strap on the ice tools no problem! Or scrunch it down to hold just a layer and some beer bottles. And it works good for one nighters with the hammock. It will not fit more inside than a UL tent, sleeping bag & pad, and Jet Boil.

As far as the water proofness goes I have no complaints, I wouldn't consider it a full on dry bag, but its close. I did some canyoneering with it and swam through some pools and everything was dry still, but I know water can trickle through the zipper if it was submerged for more than a 10 seconds.

Which brings me to my favorite feature, it is the ultimate winter pack, I can take it off and set it anywhere on snow or wet ice with no worries.

The water bladder section is great, and over all pretty comfy for how light it is.
If you put more than 40 lbs in it though it gets uncomfortable after a mile but that's understandable, it doesnt have really any padding in the hip belt and its certainly not a rigid frame osprey, so that's more of a usage issue not a product isssue.
The only complaint I do have is the zipper top, sometimes is not the quickest way of closing a pack, and can take some awkward yanking on if the packs loaded up all the way I think the roll top version may be better in this regard.

The fabric is very durable, it's been grated up chimneys, hauled up sandstone slabs, bushwacked in thick lodgepole and better yet safely carried my dog while shredding pow pow.

    all around decent pack

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

the pack was light, comfortable and gear inside stayed dry while fly fishing and wading through rivers in Montana. I would have hoped for beefier hip belt pads and the top opening is awkward to open, difficult to zipper closed if the pack is stuffed to capacity. the loop closures for trekking poles are useful but often poles often slip out on laying the pack down if the pack is not completely full.

    Comfortable and secure

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a well designed pack. I just got back from a 6 mile hike in the rain, and everything inside stayed dry. It also rode very comfortably, and can be tightened down snugly enough that there's no shifting at all. Good work, Mountain Hardwear!
