Why We Like The Phantom Hooded Down Jacket

You won't notice the Mountain Hardwear Phantom Hooded Down Jacket packed away when you're hiking into the alpine, but you will notice it missing when you wake up in high altitudes. Morning's frozen dew might keep you cowering in your sleeping bag without this jacket's lofty 800-fill down insulation. An 800-fill rating is one of the loftiest out there, which means this big puffy compresses small and maintains a surprisingly lightweight for how warm it is. As if that wasn't appealing enough, Mountain Hardwear treated the down with Q.Shield for hydrophobic properties that retain the puff's lofty warmth in moisture-riddled environments. All of these attributes situate the Phantom as Mountain Hardwear's warmest climbing-oriented midlayer.

Massive disappointment.

Did not match description. Zero hood adjustment. Non-two way zipper. Flat and not warm. Returned item.

Too little Insulation

The jacket is so thin that I cannot wear it below 40 degrees. If I could, I'd return the jacket for a beefier version.

Super warm jacket.

This jacket is so cozy and warm, I love it. The construction seems really solid and I look forward to using it for years to come.

Nice, but odd cut

Pros: I like the purple, build seems as expected for a tech puffy like this, harness compatible (high) pockets, helmet compatible hood that isn't too floppy. Light enough. Cons: Boxy narrow cut. Essentially straight down from shoulders to waist. Im short with athletic build 5'6" 39" chest 30" waist and the M was the correct size but it pulls along my chest/armpits. Not enough of an issue to return, but annoying. Especially as this usually goes over stuff when you are stopped or at a belay. I would NOT size down as they recommend. Sleeve length is a little long, but im short so I understand. No elastic cuffs to keep them back though, and no drawstring for the hood. Outdoor gear that doesn't have an athletic tapered fit is bizarre to me. Bottom line: Fine puffy when purchased on outlet discount. Good if you are narrow shouldered and average to long height. Lack of finishing (elastic cuffs, drawstring hood) is a detractor at MSRP and it can't compete at high end.

A Little Off

The jacket is very light and packable, which is nice. It's noisy. It has a weird crinkle sound, not like regular nylon. It's more like the wrapper on a package of cookies. Also the red is not red. It's orange. On the spectrum of highway construction cone to fire hydrant.... this is more the color of highway construction cone. The MH photo is filtered.

Really great jacket

I was on the fence about ordering this jacket because the reviews are so/so. However the jacket has far exceeded my expectations. It’s very warm, lofty, and fits great. I usually wear a medium, but the small fit me great (5ft 9)

Surprised

I've purchased many MHW products over the years and have always regarded them as one of the higher quality outdoor companies out there. This jacket has me questioning that (even after buying it at a huge discount). I purchased this to replace an old Patagonia down jacket. I agree with the other reviewers; the overall fit is just... Weird. The sleeves are way too long (reminds me of Marty Mcfly when he puts on the jacket from the future in the second movie, before the arms self shrink), the hand pockets are way too high (almost chest level), but worse of all, the high loft down isn't very lofty. It's pretty thin. Which is a bummer because this was going to be my new backpacking jacket, but not sure how I would feel depending on this as my primary layer in remote northern latitude locations. Shouldn't have donated my Patagonia jacket. I do commend MHW though for the purple color which I absolutely love. Most other companies produce pretty bland and routine jacket colors. This one stands out for sure.

Proceed with caution

I think MH messed up with this one. Spec-wise the jacket is tops, and look and feel is exceptional for this price point like other MH products. However, like other reviewers have said the jacket is pretty tight across the shoulder blades, chest and armpits. I'm within the size range for the medium, bought it, and found the same holds true for me. I'm 5'10" 170lbs with a 39" chest. The jacket is ok through the waist and abdomen, but very constrictive in the armpits, chest, and shoulders....just enough to notice and be very annoying while wearing and going about normal activities. I bought the large to see if it would fit better, but like other reviewers, even though it's more comfortable in the problem areas, I found I'm swimming in it everywhere else. Returned it and will return the medium, too. Bottom line, if you're between sizes or have broad shoulders don't get this jacket. It's designed for a very specific build, not for an avg build. For reference, I also have a Phantom Jacket size M (no hood) that's a few years old that doesn't have this problem. Something went wrong with this latest edition.

Lightweight Warmth

Got this jacket (black medium) in early March for days on the Northern California coast (read: cold, foggy, windy). The warmth to weight ratio is phenomenal, and the upgraded material over the ghost whisperer is well worth the extra ounce, and feels very durable. Like others have said, besides the waist adjustment, nothing else is adjustable. It would nice to have Velcro cuffs, tighter elastic on the wrists, or an internal cuff/thumb hole as the opening is quite large and needs to be gripped if putting hands in pockets. Speaking of pockets, they are just big enough to fit clinched fists, and if just hanging around the fire or at the beach, they can get uncomfortable. Minor issue, but something you’ll notice after a few hours of wearing it. The jacket does compress into either pocket, but there is no drawstring like in the photo, and the zipper does not flip around like some jackets, so you’ll just have to pull it from the underside. Overall, a great jacket, and a solid purchase. 5’9” 170lb 32” waist, long arms (6’1” wingspan, no issue with arm length) P.S. soak it for a few minutes and throw it in the dryer when it arrives, it’ll loft right back up.

Love it and everyone loves the color

Great jacket! Very warm. I am 6'3 and thin, got the medium. The sleeve length is perfect. People comment on the color all the time with how much they like it.
