Phantom Alpine Sleeping Bag

Mountain Hardwear's Phantom collection consists of ultralight, packable sleeping bags, and the Phantom Alpine Sleeping Bag is optimized for alpinism, big wall climbs, and portaledges. It has 850-fill down insulation that boasts a 15F temperature rating, packs small, and weighs around two pounds. Mountain Hardwear wrapped this insulation up in ultralight fabric, and Pertex Y-Fuse adds rugged water-resistance around the footbox and back for extra weather protection. This Phantom's alpine-specific design includes dual side zippers that accommodate your harness when you're anchored in.

in love

First and foremost, the Phantom Alpine's insulation capabilities were truly impressive. Despite facing chilly temperatures at night, I remained comfortably warm and snug inside the bag. The 15-degree Fahrenheit rating proved accurate, providing reliable warmth even in sub-freezing conditions. The bag's innovative insulation technology effectively trapped heat, ensuring a cozy and restful sleep every night. What sets the Phantom Alpine apart from other sleeping bags is its exceptional lightweight design. Backpacking requires careful consideration of weight, and I was delighted to find that the Phantom Alpine didn't compromise on warmth or quality while being incredibly light. Carrying it along the trails was effortless, enhancing the overall convenience of my backpacking experience

Great but not perfect

I am local to the Canadian Rockies and the gear is used year round. I recently took this bag in for a 10-day expedition at the end of September. Overall satisfied with bag and I really enjoy the double zipper system. However, a critical part of mummy sleeping bags is missing and that is the draught collar. Several of my other mummy bags have the draught collar and it is instrumental in a good night rest, I had to sleep with a pair of pants as a draught collar. Draught collar integration should be strongly considered as a necessary upgrade

The best of the best

Quality is superb and it feels super soft and silky against the skin. Every detail is well thought out. Only spent one night in it so far and I 100% believe its temperature rating. It got down only to about 7C (44F) and I was literally roasting in this bag and couldn't do it up but rather draped it over me. I love the dual zips as it makes it easy to roll from side to side. As other reviewers have noted MH went a little too tight on the cut. For reference I am 5'9" 180 pounds and when I zip up the bag fully it is a little too snug for my tastes. That's OK and I can live with it as I rarely ever zip my sleeping bags fully up anyways.

Next Generation Sleeping Bag

It's obvious the developers of this bag were given the freedom to create a no-compromise design...with all the best ingredients. First class materials, stitching and design throughout. I normally modify my gear, but in this case I simply can't see anything I'd change. At 5-9, 200 lbs with wide shoulders and muscular build, I was a bit worried about the alpine cut. Yes it's snug, but once I spent a little time in the bag getting familiar with the hood and excellent zips (best ever), I decided this is a keeper! There's not a lot of extra room, but I was able to get in with my Ghost Whisperer jacket and pants and zip it up with no problem. The zippers (and nice long cord pulls) are easy to access from inside, won't snag, and if necessary you can get an arm out through the hood without unzipping. With a zipper on each side featuring three zipper heads, you get full venting control, ability to use with arms outside the bag, and of course the ability to be secured cliff-side. On top of everything else, this is a great-looking bag...the red interior is gorgeous. Hats off to the designers!

Alpine use only

Let me start with the good. The bag is well designed and features high quality materials that I'm sure will stand up to many years of use (and abuse). The innovative dual zipper system seems like it would work well for climbers and the tongue flap design offers flexibility when venting. The bag also packs down quite well. Overall call me impressed. Now for the bad. Its an EXTREMELY snug fit. I have other performance mummy bags, including the "regular" Mountain Hardware Phantom 0 bag, but those performance bags look down right roomy compared to this "Alpine" bag. I'm a fit 6'2" 180lbs with broad shoulders and while I could zip the bag closed, my arms had to be straight at my sides. i.e. I couldn't even fold them over my chest. I'm not looking for roomy, but I'm also not spending nights hanging off the side of a mountain where I can justify this tight of a fit. To me the bag is built for exactly what it says - Alpine Climbing. If looking for a good 15* bag for backpacking or camping I would suggest looking at other more comfortable options. I'm not going to ding the rating of the bag because it is quite high quality, but be advised on its intended use and fit.

I absolutely love this sleeping bag. I'm 182 cm and 67 kg, and the fit is just right.

Not a mixed bag here! A+

This bag is the future. After owning this I won’t consider another bag. I’m 5’11 165lbs, pretty average climber build although commonly between most companies M and L due to broad shoulders. I bought the long version to be able to stuff clothes in the bottom and definitely happy with that decision. Shoulders fit fine. Love this bag, Mountain Hardwear is back!
