The lightest, full-featured down jacket on earth.

Weighing in at a mere seven ounces, Mountain Hardwear’s Ghost Whisperer Hooded Down Jacket is a weight saving addition to your backpacking kit. The lightest down jacket on the market, it’s packed with 800-fill Nikwax treated hydrophobic down. You won’t need to worry if the jacket gets wet in a light rainstorm while you’re out in the backcountry or in an alpine environment as water will shear right off.

With a low profile slim fit shape, the Ghost Whisperer makes a great layering piece to wear under a shell jacket when skiing or it can even be worn as its own layer and works great with a harness. The down insulation is packable as well and the jacket can be stuffed into its own pocket for easy storage. A carabiner loop adds convenience and clips onto a pack or harness while it’s stuffed away into its storage pocket.

    • A warm, weight saving jacket for backpacking trips or alpine environments
    • Stay comfortable at elevation with 800-fill down
    • NikWax Hydrophobic down repels light rain on the trail
    • Packs into pocket with carabiner loop for convenient storage

    Very bulky

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: L
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 150lbs

The other reviews say it fits true to size, but I got an L (I am 5.11/150/athletic) and it was way too bulky. The shoulders fit fine and I liked the sleeves that were long enough, but otherwise it looked like a trash bag on me and nothing like in pictures. Bummer!

    Perfect Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: X-Large
    • Height: 5'10"

LOVE LOVE LOVE this jacket. Perfect fit, sleeve length wasn't an issue when it normally is. Easily stuffed into its own pocket and tucked away in my pack. Kept me wonderfully warm both around the campfire on a cool night without overheating as well as on 4,000+ foot peaks in the White Mountains.
Although it could fit true to size, I did go for the x-large because I have broad shoulders and long arms, a medium would've probably been a hair too tight for my tastes, plus I took into account all the layering required hiking in winter.

    Light Weight and Great Fit

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: S
    • Height: 5'2"
    • Weight: 115lbs

I'm 5' 2", 34A and this jacket fits comfortable on me. I have been using it every day in SF especially during the rainy season. It's been amazing so far that it is warm and breathable. I've washed it like 4 times now and it's very easy to dry and cleaning the jacket. My only concern is the feather can sometimes poke out from the fabric, everything else is great!

    Love it!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 5'2"
    • Weight: 155lbs

I purchased this jacket after my puppy chewed off the zipper on my black North Face (I'm sending it in to NF to be repaired!). I had been wanting a navy jacket anyway, and this proved to be the catalyst. I have 6 other jackets (all North Face), but this has quickly become my 'go to'. It's light weight warm (I haven't used it in the coldest part of the winter yet, so can't attest to viciously cold temps), and I love most things about it. One thing that I wish it had is an inside pocket (like NF) where I can stash $ or hotel key, etc without fear of losing it out of the basic hand pockets!! I also find the length to be a little difficult, but I'm on the short side.......I thus had to get a larger size than usually do as it comes down past my hips.

    Really tight armpits

I very truly wanted to love this jacket, but unfortunately the armpits were sooooo tight that I definitely could not wear it. I’m 5’4” 120lbs and ordered the small. The body was a little looser than I expected, but the armpits dug in really tight. The color was awesome and the price was too 😭

      Fits perfect

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XS
      • Height: 5'6"
      • Weight: 123lbs

I bought the Stone Green it looks exactly like in the photo, it is very very very light weight, packs super small, fits perfect. I have use it for hiking, traveling or just hanging around, it does a great job keeping me warm.

      Shoulder fit issue

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: small
      • Height: 5'8"
      • Weight: 130lbs

I received this jacket as a gift and loved it despite some sizing issues. I am 5'8 athletic and the medium was almost baggy on me. I exchanged it for a small, which fit much better everywhere except the shoulders. Disclaimer: I have wide shoulders. But after a while I realized that the jacket pinched around the shoulders and underarm area. However, if you have a slimmer build, I would highly recommend the Ghost Rider! It didn't wear out despite surviving winter bouldering and kept me warm the whole time! Plus it is lightweight and packs down into its own pocket

      My favorite Jacket

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XL
      • Height: 6'2"
      • Weight: 180lbs

I love this jacket! I wear this jacket all the time and it is great for whatever I am using it for from long backpacking trips to just hanging around town. It is so light weight that it feels like it isn't even there all I know is that im not cold. It is warm enough to keep you from getting cold but breathable enough to keep you from getting too hot. I love the fit of this jacket because it is slightly fitted so it doesnt git in the way when I am doing technical things like climbing but it is also loose enough to give you a comfortable full range of motion. I would highly recommend this jacket no matter what type of activities you will use it for.

      Warm n' Lite

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Holy Ghost Whisperer. I cannot get over the weight and warmth of this jacket. Hydrophobic down boosts impressive loft and packability. My only concern is the zipper - I would not call it flimsy, but it's not exactly heavy duty. Have not had any issues yet! The face fabric material is incredibly thin, and it is hard to believe it has an durability, but the way this is manufactured results in surprising durability. Oftentimes jackets in this weight class will skip pockets, but this jacket has two pockets to keep your hands toasty, and the jackets stuffs into its own pocket. Be sure to storeyour jacket unstuffed so it does not compromise the loft! A boxy fit that is a bit on the slim side. A bit tight in the arms, so I might suggest sizing up if you want to layer. The hood also does not have a drawcord, but its it fitted enough to keep your noggin warm. The tradeoffs for weight (no drawcord cinch on hood and not-so-burly zippers) are minor and overall I'm loving this jacket! The olive color (Green Fade) is beautiful!

      Angels must have made it.

      • Height: 5'9"

I swear I am being hugged by angels every time I wear this jacket. The hood is great. All of it fits nicely under my shell.

      Solid Jacket

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size

The ghost whisperer is so light! It's easy to squeeze it into my pack when I'm worried about cold temperatures at night or on the summit. It has held up well so far, although I have been concerned at how durable it was given how thin the fabric is!

      Keeps You Warm

I wore this jacket almost every day when I was trekking to Base Camp in Nepal during October-November. I needed to travel light but have gear/clothing that would be sufficient to keep me warm. This jacket is lighter than a feather, and it's the warmest thing I own. I camped most nights of the trip and often wore this to sleep as well. Highly recommend.

The Ghost Whisperer jacket is the best down coat that I have ever owned, so naturally I had to get my Girlfriend one so she would stop stealing mine ! When you bust this out of the package and try it on you will not be able to believe how light it is! Mountain Hardwear has really honed in on the weight to warmth ratio of this coat. One of my favorite features is how packable this coat is. It stuffs down into its own pocket making it about he size of a 16 oz Nalgene water bottle. I use this coat almost every single day, all the way from backpacking/ essential mid layer while skiing to just wearing it around the town. The hood is very form fitting but keeps your ears incredibly warm when the temps begin to drop. The only feature that this coat is missing is an inside chest pocket for a cell phone for easy access while skiing. I would highly recommend this coat to anyone who is looking for a light down layer that is highly functional and packable! She is 5'6" and 120 lbs and the medium fits her great!

      Still feeling it out

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 5'7"
      • Weight: 168lbs

Since buying this jacket a few weeks ago, I've used it almost every day. Moving to a place prone to cold weather from Florida has been quite a challenge. Not knowing anything about winter jackets I went ahead and purchased this after hearing a recommendation.

Still deciding on whether I like the hood or not but besides that it definitely does the job of keeping me warm.
The fit is perfect. Originally, I ordered a large thinking I need the extra room for long sleeve shirts and wiggle room but I had to return it because it was way too big.

The jacket is super compact and great for outdoors activities.

My only wish is that it had more than two pockets. I've also started to notice feathers falling out which could eventually become an issue but it hasn't made a difference for now.

      Worth it

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this jacket. The most impressive part is the packability and weight. I am 5'2", 116lb and the small is perfect for throwing on over a tshirt or using after the sun goes down for fall/spring backpacking. I have yet to test it in colder than 35F, but will definitely use this as a staple layering piece. I've climbed, hiked, and camped with it already.

      Packable Warmth

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

First - I LOVE this jacket. It goes with me on any trips or jaunts up in the mountains. It easily stuffs into a pocket and has a loop so can be clipped to a climbing harness. It's slightly wind resistant so that's nice as well. I always run cold, so was worried that this thin of a jacket wouldn't do well for me in most conditions, but was wrong! I have the unhooded, but can see uses for both.

My only complaint with this jacket is the fit in the shoulders. I am usually a small, but have fairly broad shoulders so sized up in this jacket. So now it's a bit loose around my torso, but still a decent fit. Keep that in mind if you have broader shoulders, but highly recommend!
