According to fables of yore, the blood of a dragon held a special endowment that could make your choice in armor completely and utterly invincible. However, many years have passed since these giant, mythological reptilian creatures were pursued for their blood, so we speculate that if a knight required modern-day armor, the Mountain Hardwear Men's Dragon's Back Jacket would be his top choice. Built for enduring fickle weather and wayward winds, the Dragon's Back is a fully featured ski jacket that offers paramount protection.

Crafted with the waterproof yet breathable Dry.Q Core shell fabric, this jacket's exterior consists of a unique, engineered fabric that is crafted layer by layer and in turn combines both face and backing materials with contrasting assets to ultimately meet the demands of your adventure. The helmet compatible hood, underarm zippered ventilation, and adjustable hem provide a fine-tuned fit and ample protection should your adventure require a little extra personalized calibration.

    Great jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 5'7"

Replaced my 20 year old North Face jacket. Well made, and the bright orange allows my kids to spot me at the ski resorts! ;-)

    Good stuff

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Finally, a hood that can be pulled on and off without unzipping the jacket, with elastic pull-cords to keep it in place through the nastiest of winds. Great jacket, with all of the essential bits, and pockets to spare. It is only a shell, so prepare to layer up for the cold days.

    Great coat!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 155lbs

Have worn this coat quite abit on various ski trips and it is great! Is well fitted but is loose enough to accommodate a thick puffer underneath.

Only complaint is that there could be one or two more pockets.

    Favorite shell

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: large
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 175lbs

This is now my go to shell for pretty much everything snow related. It lets absolutely no wind or precipitation in when fully zipped up. Took it high in to the San Juan's with 40+ mph winds and felt completely protected. The pit zips dumped heat when I was skinning up. Mountain Hardwear stuff seems to be super bomber, so I imagine I'll have it for years.

I have two minor issues with this jacket though. The first is that the hood cinch doesn't grip very tight. In the winds mentioned above, I pulled it as tight as I could, but it kept working loose which kept the hood from staying on my dome. The second problem was that the powder skirt bunches up high to my belly button when moving. If it had a loop that would connect to my belt, this would alleviate the issue. These two problems only happen in high winds or high powder though, so for 95% of the time I'll be using it, this jacket will be perfect. Paired with a Stoic wool base layer and Patagonia R1, I felt completely comfortable exerting myself up the mountain and hanging out at the top.

    Initial Impressions and Update

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 170lbs

Hood is a bit large and I agree that not being able to tuck it away could get annoying. Powderskirt isn't removable however I found that if you just unsnap it from the four snaps inside it's like it's not there. 6'1" with a +1 ape index and 170 and the medium was spot on. Will update once I put this through the wringer in Crested Butte in a few weeks.

Update: Charged hard in this for a week in CB and it met expectations. The hood that could flop around, didn't, even when heading down the Head Wall and cruising blacks like International. Even stand alone as a shell it was warm, cutting the wind nicely. By the end of the week I was in this and a t-shirt running laps. (weather was in mid 40s with bluebird skies). The advertised wrist pocket for your lift ticket is minuscule at best (not sure what lift ticket would fit in there) and there is nothing inside the pocket to tether it to. Thats really the only complaint. It was warm so it breathed well and with the snow melt, I was dry. What more you could you ask for! upgrading to 5 star. I really can't leave it at 4 for the lift pocket.

    Great Deal and Great specs

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 193lbs

Excellent shell .......plenty of room for base and/or midlayering ..... the specs are in line with much more expensive tech shells ..... RECCO, vent zips, ticket pocket on sleeve, goggle pocket inside with removable cleaning cloth, helmet compatible hood, powder skirt ....... on and on and on ....... really looking forward to it ........ 4 and a half STARS until it goes through a rigorous test while making tracks ........... if it lives up to my previous experiences with MTNHARDWARE gear I'm sure it'll deserve the other half star

    I've got your 'Dragon's Back'..

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

After years of begging my husband to buy a new ski jacket for himself, he did and chose a winner! He loves his Dragon's Back jacket! He says roomy and warm. Has kept the wind out. Loves all the pockets it has, inside and out. And was psyched there was an attached goggle lense cleaning pad. Has worn it a few times. The true test will be after the "guy's weekend" skiing and all the ski antics involved...

    Unanswered Question

Should I size this jacket up? Looking for a shell to wear over my size L EMS 800 puffy for added protection when skiing in the back country.

    What size should I get?

    5'11" 175 lbs.

    Hey Chris,

Based on your measurements, I would recommend you go with the Medium in this MHW jacket. Feel free to contact me directly with any more questions.

Does this shell have integrated insulation? I am curious to see what the inside looks like when jacket is unzipped
