    Top Soft-shell Rain Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'4"
    • Weight: 195lbs

I bought this jacket because I needed a waterproof jacket that provided some warmth. The Dragon is a solid design. Great fit - not to tight, but not too loose. There is plenty of warmth, but the jacket is not suffocating. The double pockets on the inside ensures all the valuables can stay dry.. This jacket does run large, but that is the exact reason I purchased it. The extra length in the torso is exactly what I was looking for. Overall...solid jacket and I would strongly recommend it for anyone looking for a sturdy, all-around soft-shell.

    The "in-between" jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 170lbs

I dig many things about the construction here. The hood has some semi-sturdy wire inside it so you can mould it into a shape you want. It is lightly insulated (but not over-insulated). The material has some light stretch to it which is great for moving around.

However, this jacket has 2 big caveats. The first the description makes it sound like this jacket is fully wind-proof. It is important to note that only SOME of this jacket is AirShield meterial. The chest pocket, front waist, and pit areas are actually made of air-permeable material so note it does not windblock (at all) in those areas. That might be okay if you are moving hard and generating a lot of heat. This kind of puts it in a gray area, not robust enough to be a true shell layer, but not light enough to be true active layer.

The second is sizing. This is the second MH jacket I have owned (the other was a Sharp Chuter). Just like that one, I had to get this in a small. The medium had crazy long sleeves and way too much material in the chest. However, unlike the Sharp Chuter jacket, this jacket in a small was VERY tight around the waist (too tight to use practically). So if you are lean/athletic you have to make a choice on fit. I actually had mine tailored to add additional softshell material in the waist but if you finicky on fit you might have trouble with this one.

    worth it

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 155lbs

So far, so good! I got a small due to liking a fairly slim fit and don't plan to use it in a lot of heavy layering conditions. Spring/fall, occasional mild winter days, spring skiing etc. The arm length is longer than normal, but I've got a wingspan to accommodate. Worth keeping in mind if you've got t-rex arms or simply don't like lengthy sleeves. Ample pockets with good interiors, as MH usually does. Material has some good, but not too much, stretch to it. Plan on getting to know this jacket for years to come.
