Head beyond the beyond.
The Mountain Hardwear Cyclone Pants are certain to inspire bold acts in the wild beyond. With construction burly enough to stand up to wind-tunnels themselves, they conquer blizzards and sandstorms alike, and an articulated fit that has stretch where you need it so you can focus on the trek ahead instead of your pants below. The Cyclone Pants are designed to tackle mountaineering feats, climb frozen waterfalls, and ski deep into the backcountry, where the tastiest lines involve rappelling down massive rock faces.
When you slide on the Cyclone Pants you'll find that your legs are wrapped up nicely in Polartec Neoshell Stretch, offering 3-layer protection from harsh elements without restricting your movement. The seat and knees see reinforcement with NeoShell RipStop that lends its abuse-proof characteristics to the pants, so you have backup in areas that are prone to being beat up. But that's far from where the tech stops, these pants are loaded with bells and whistles that take them from your standard resort pant well into the backcountry.
Extra-large hand pockets are strategically placed to accommodate a harness for when things get a bit hairy, with 2-way zippers, so you can easily access necessities while on a pitch. The legs feature 7/8th side zips, enabling you to fix and adjust layers on the fly, or dump massive amounts of heat when the going gets warm. Moving down, the cuffs are reinforced with 330D Cordura guards, tough enough to take on hits from sharp crampon points, and underneath a gaiter with snap adjustment and webbing loops fits over an array of mountaineering boots, keeping the elements outside so you can stay toasty and dry.

I've worn these as my ski pants the last few times I've skied here in Colorado. The first thing to know is that these pants have no insulation. You'll have to rely on a base layer to keep you warm. Then again, that would also make these ideal backcountry pants. They use MH's proprietary breathable, waterproof fabric, with extra padding on high-wear areas like the knees. They have full-length, double-sided zippers so you have the ability to vent exactly the way you'd like. They use MH's amazing self-sealing zippers, which I admittedly have never tried to submerge or anything, but which seem to do a great job of keeping snow out. I have skiied in powder almost up to my waist with no intrusion.
They also have the best fastening system I've ever seen at the base, letting you get a good seal around a ski or mountaineering boot, with lots of control over how tight the fit is around the boot.
The fit is fantastic. Like a lot of MH gear, these pants are great for lankier people like myself. I really appreciate having ski pants that aren't absurdly baggy. For me, wearing the size of Cyclone pants that I would wear in jeans, I have just the right amount of space beneath for a wool base layer and a pair of stretchy synthetic pants. They look great, and the RECCO tag is a good plus as well.
I bought these as ski pants, but I think they will be fantastic for snowshoing, winter hiking and ice climbing as well.
Can the adjustable gaiter of this pan fit for the the alpine ski boots?
Are these waterproof? Or are they a soft shell?
Hey Clinton, these are a 3 layer soft shell pant. So the answer to your question is yes.
