Best sunshirt
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Size Bought:
- Medium
I wore this shirt for a hike yesterday and was amazed how light it felt. The sleeve length with thumb holes are the perfect fit. I like that the shirt wasn’t too tight and the draw cord makes the shirt attractive and hides any small belly roll.

Worked well
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer

I purchased this shirt after reading many positive reviews and was not at all disappointed. Paddled in Baja for a week with it. Washed it out once, it dried rapidly and back on it went.

My favorite outdoor top layer for spring and fall
I’ve had this hoodie for two years now and I absolutely love it. I’ve taken it on numerous multi day hiking trips and I ran a spring morning 10 miler in it. Super lightweight and soft. The perfect weight for cool mornings. Transitions well into daytime higher temps because of its breathability. Highly recommend. I’m about to order another. I’m 5’1” and 117#. The xs size is perfect.

I recently purchased this top for sun and wind protection and it didn’t disappoint. I wore this for my long run last weekend and it was wonderful. It was cloudy with north wind gusts and it kept the occasional sun and dirt off of me the whole time. It’s thin enough to be cool but yet it also kept me comfortable temp-wise. I like the drawstring at the waist as well. It fit true to size in my opinion. The zip pocket on the side is really small though. I think one energy gel or a car key would fit and that’s it. I see another Crater Lake hoodie in my future.

Love this sun hoodie so much! Fits like a dream and keeps me protected and surprisingly cool hiking under the Arizona sun. It’s so comfortable I can easily sleep in it, which makes it invaluable during backpacking trips. So far, no pilling or damage from pack straps. Also, I can wear it into town without feeling like a schlub.

I purchased the Crater Lake hoodie for warm days of hiking in Arizona. It fits and performs as advertised. It will be my go-to shirt for warm, sunny day hikes. I love it.

BEST Sun Hoodie
Love, love, love these. They’re the only UPF hoodies I’ve tried that I can tolerate in 100+ temperatures. My only complaint is that the stitching could be better quality, especially around the thumb holes and hems. Mine started unraveling in small areas after only a few months. But these are still far better than the competitors, and I absolutely plan to repair these until they fall apart, then buy more. I’m around 5’10” and 140 pounds, and the small fits well. The arms are even long enough for me to use the thumb holes! It helps that the material is pretty stretchy, so the fit is forgiving.

Fashionable Protection
Very nice light weight sun protection, used this when rafting for sun protection without overheating and having to slather sun screen all over my body.

Great value Sun hoodie
One of my favourite baselayers out there. I love how soft the material feels against the skin and how it wicks sweat and dries off quickly. The best part for me though is the hoodie. Love that it goes over the helmet and covers my neck and ears from the sun. Mine has gone through several washes and fabric is holding out well.

Best Sun Hoody Ever!
This shirt has been my favorite sun hoody for all things mountain! It's great for the summer super hot months, also great in the cooler months of winter and wet spring. When it's hot this long sleeve hoody keeps me cooler than a short sleeve swiftly (Lululemon) on it's own. The fabric is cooling and not to mention has SPF which is a must when we are climbing outdoors and in the sun all day. I have this top in 15 different colors because I love it so much! I wear it every single time I go out for a hike, multi-night climb, glacier travel and at the crag. The lightness of the fabric and stretch fit so well on everyone and different bodies. I also enjoy the ties at the bottom so that I can make it fit exactly as desired. Without the ties it wouldn't have such a great shape. I've tried other brands in comparison, the Outdoor Research Echo long sleeve hoody is much thinner, often see through and doesn't have the great stretch component. The Patagonia sun hoody is either too tight in the smaller size or wayy too big in the next size. It's much thicker, bulkier and not as cooling as the Crater Lake. During the winter, I use this as my base layer and add a fleece on top. If it's really cold, I'll put a thin wool layer under the Crater Lake. I am happy that Mountain Hardwear has continued to make this wonderful shirt for so many years!
