Lightline Down Jacket

Designed to meet the needs of mountaineers who routinely spend time in harsh alpine environments, the Mountain Equipment Lightline Down Jacket is designed to shield you from the cold when staying warm isn't just preferable, but essential. The windproof and water-resistant DryLite outer shell is packed full of 700-fill down, stitched in horizontal baffles to ensure that the insulation stays where you need it most. The down itself is an incredibly warm 90% down/10% feather mixture, which is the warmest down/feather ratio generally commercially available. Mountain Equipment gave the Lightline a fully-adjustable zip-off hood so you can trim weight if you need to, and used stitched-through construction to ensure that it isn't carrying any extra bulk that can be a hassle on serious alpine expeditions. An insulated baffle sits behind the zipper to prevent drafts and heat loss, and the zippered hand pockets are covered by insulated flaps for the same reason.

Way warmer than I expected

I got this jacket a few weeks ago and hadn't been able to test it due to a warm winter. These past couple days our temperatures dropped, and today I decided to go on a little photoshoot with my family in the canyon. Temps dropped to -11F (yes that's -11 degrees Fahrenheit) with a windchill warning and the sun had already dropped, I decided to put it to the test and only wore a short sleeve shirt underneath. This jacket kept me so warm, I forgot it was -11F until I took my hands out of my pockets and they froze after just a few seconds. I spent around an hour or more standing at the same place, sometimes walking but nothing to increase my heart rate, and was still incredibly warm. The jacket is very well made and fits like a charm, I could've gotten away with a small but I've been super happy with a medium. The jacket is also stronger and more durable than I expected it to be. After several uses, I haven't had problems with the zipper, as Peter M mentioned below, you just have to make sure they engage well first. I did test it several more times around the 20-30° range with just a shirt and I got too hot and had to zip it open to vent a bit. I tend to run a bit cold as well but I'm extremely happy to have found this jacket.

Almost Perfect

Looked around quite a bit and read review after review before I bought this jacket. It was to replace a 20 year old goose down puffer jacket that is aging gracefully. Love the style of the Mtn. Equip. Lightline jacket. Wore it for a few days in 30°F, wet snow mostly. It repelled most of the wet very well. Windproof as advertised. Pretty sure this jacket is meant to be worn as part of a layer system. I want to add my confusion as to why the zipper is so small. Hard to zip without looking down and fumbling with it. Don't let it be a deal breaker though. My shoulders got cold and I could tell the jacket was at the edge of it's warmth with a t-shirt on underneath at 30°, not unbearable and should be good for most applications but we get some pretty low temps here in Michigan and I've been spoiled by my old jacket. I did return it, which was smooth as silk. Great customer service.

Reported zipper prob. ..other reviewers

Some reviews have complained of the zipper design? The jacket has a very good zipper of European design? But it takes a while to understand how it functions? Press both zippers on left side down all the way until you feel them engaging..then set the right side in all the way? Hold and pull up? Once you get the hang of it it?s just as fast and zipper quality is actually way superior to other jackets?have had a favorite jackets from Patagonia etc..? Their zippers had to be replaced? I have had similar jackets from Patagonia, Arc?teryx, etc.....This may not be as lightweight as other jackets but it?s superior in its warmth.. The hood quality is fantastic? If you pull the zipper all the way up, your neck and chest stay very toasty in windy, cold weather? It?s also roomy enough to put a middle layer underneath if you need it? Hope it?s been helpful folks!

Great Winter Down Jacket

This jacket is very well constructed and very warm, especially for the it's price range. I wore it in 15 F weather last week with only a t-shirt underneath and I was toasty. I really like the removable hood so I don't have a bunch of hoods to deal with when I use this as a mid layer. The size medium allows me to wear this jacket as a mid layer or on top as a belay jacket (although it is a little tight around the chest area for this). The jacket is rather large when packed down especially if you compare it to a lightweight down jacket. However, you will actually be warm in this jacket below freezing and not just pretending like someone wearing a down sweater.
