LESS MESS
I like chalk balls for indoor climbing because I don't end up getting chalk everywhere. I did notice that the chalk could have been better though. Still nifty little ball at a great price.

Nifty Little Ball
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I really like that i don't have to mess around with a bag of chalk dust or a block of chalk. It was a little hard to get into my bag, but it works like a charm. Definitely not an overkill with the amount of dust that comes off.

Wonderful chalk ball. Of course it's like any chalk ball, I do wish it would give off more chalk, but wasn't expecting anything different. Sets in on my hands nicely, give it a nice feel and gets the job done!

leave less trace
it is probably a good idea to minimize climbing's impact on the rock and landscape.

I prefer more chalk
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I really loved the idea of this chalk ball with the idea of making a little less of a mess than I normally do with loose chalk.... but I was disappointed with the amount of chalk that comes out of the ball. It lets out a decent amount, and some of my friends still like this one, but it doesn't get enough chalk on my hand very easily. I will be sticking to loose chalk going forward.

Great Chalk Ball

The Material that this ball is made out of is great, and the chalk is good quality. Cheap and effective.

I Like Lots of Chalk
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I know some people really love the chalk balls and some gyms I know prefer them, however, I don't ever feel like I get enough chalk off of them. I prefer the powder chalk due to having more chalk on my hands.

Very Light Chalk
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I boulder 3-4x a week and I did use up the whole chalk ball before moving to a different brand. Pros - Gets the job done Cons - Very light chalk (no matter how much I try to pack the chalk in my hands, I can never seem to get enough chalk as I would like) - Tough to get chalk when the ball is new

BUSTED!!!
I just took this ball out for the first time yesterday and it broke in my bag and almost all came out. On top of that it doesn't really dry my hands as well as regular chalk.

Beginner's thoughts
- Familiarity:

I just started indoor and outdoor climbing a few months ago and recently realized the benefits of chalk. I have never used loose chalk, but my experience with this product has been very positive. Dries out my ridiculously sweaty hands and doesn't cause a mess in my bag. I find myself reaching for chalk a little more than I would want to, but no mess, no stress, and most of the gyms by me don't allow loose chalk anyway. I'm a fan of this product

Do you remember your dream project? Good but not excessive protection along the gorgeous looking line. Just right amount of steepness and hardness. And fun. Lots of fun. You had been training really hard. You had been dreaming this line for months. And finally you got there... WHAT THE [censored]?!?!?! Chalk line. Hidden holds? No way - this is the chalk line. Every and any hold is chalked. Really they are over chalked. You can see every move from the quarter mile distance - this is the chalk line. You barely need to carry your chalk bag - at any rest spot you can dig enough chalk to chalk up your fingers, and your palms, and even your butts if you by any chance need it. Do you remember it? What to do? Begin with yourself. Stop using chalk that marks rocks. Get Metolius Eco Ball. Convert to non-marking chalk today and tell your friends to do the same tomorrow. I used Eco Ball a several really hot days and did not notice any serious issues with it. Just get it and stop mark your favorite rocks.

Great chalk ball! Larger then most, but still fits chalk bag fine. Non-refillable, great for indoor climbing

Not Good

I bought the Eco Ball because a couple of locations here in Colorado have banned white chalk. It is okay, but not even close to regular white chalk.

These are great
I've taken to using these all the time now, not just in the gym where I told to. They are pretty big so make sure you have a large chalk bag. It's gotten to the point where I use it to start, then when it gets smaller I pass it down to my wife and her smaller chalk bag, then it ends up with the kids. It works just as well as any other chalk and but doesn't cover the rocks and your clothes with marks.

If I buy baby powder will that keep my hands dry the same as climbing chalk? I am 95% sure that it would but I'm not certain what the makeup of the chalk is..

No. climbing/gymnastic chalk is Magnesium carbonate, which is super drying and abrasive. Baby powder (Talcum powder and corn starch) will make glue on your hands, and probably be slick.
Steve Tibbitts

That's exactly right Sam. Baby powder will keep your hands very dry but it does make them slick!

As I understand, it is the same chalk which is dyed so it blends in better with the rock. It is considered "eco" because it comes in a ball, and the ball causes you use less chalk because you only get chalk on the parts of the hand it touches. You also waste a lot less when you accidentally drop your bag. (no more white piles at the crag)

Updating this a bit. I don't know if Metolius is using a different material or not. I older ones I used were greenish black and worked great. I started using a new white one a couple of days ago and couldn't get much chalk to come through the material. It was very frustrating being 40' up a route and not being able to get any chalk on my hands. I won't buy again.
