    Bigger than the average pad.

The Metolius Recon Crash Pad folds small for easy transport, but when opened it offers more landing area than standard-size crash pads. Its cleverly designed shape manages to be four inches narrower when folded than most pads, yet its new sandwich foam design allows excellent shock absorption when you have to bail from above. Ballistic nylon on the bottom boosts durability, while a small external and larger internal pocket give you easy spots for your shoes, chalk bag, and keys.
    • Internal pocket provides a places to stash shoes and a chalk bucket
    • Padded shoulder straps for easy carry
    • Drag handles for quick relocation while you climber is topping out a problem
    • Unbreakable metal buckles

    Quality and function

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Metolius always seems to make quality, durable gear and this is no exception. Large pad with a unique tri fold design that is no frills and just works, making it easier to navigate through tight trails and fits in the back of my three door Hyundai hatchback easily. A small gripe is that the carpet square to wipe your shoes became very piley (?) upon first use but after pulling off the excess it's not so bad now and still works to clean your shoes. It would be easy to get pads mixed up if other people at the boulders have the same pad but after tying a bandana around one of the numerous handlebars ( a good thing!) I can spot mine out of a pile easily.

    My Favorite

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've done a lot of bouldering and have used a lot of bouldering pads and have come to the conclusion that the Recon is my favorite. It is a large pad but doesn't feel to bulky to move around or carry long distances. It is slightly smaller than the Black Diamond Mondo, but not nearly as bulky to move around. Definitely a great pad for the money!

If you’re looking into climbing gear and are looking for a recommendation, give me a call or shoot me an email and I’d be happy to help you out with some recommendations.

I’m typically in the office Monday-Friday and would love to talk, but if you call and I’m not in, make sure to leave the best number to call you back at or your email address in the voicemail.

    New best friend!

Holy cow, she's become my new bff. The quality is top notch and worth the price. I love the tri-fold crash pad feature. It gives a little bit more padding than regular bi-folds. It does make it sort of thicker but it's actually a lot less wider than the bi-folds so it's comfortable to carry around. It's durable and there when I need her. I love the carpet like fabric in the middle that is so helpful to wipe of your climbing shoes! I would definitely recommend this over a bi-fold pad any day!

      Big and mobile

I really like this pad and am glad I finally decided on this Metolious Recon. The pad is trifold so it packs up pretty small to fit in the trunk of your car and to not be too cumbersome carrying on your back. While it packs and carries small it protects a large area and its extremely solid. It is stiff enough to handle the higher falls but still soft to cushion the lower stuff to. I really like the shoe cleaning mat thing that is in the middle and the pockets are large enough to carry most things you'll need (beer.) I love this pad.

A lot of pad for the price

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

By far the most pad you can buy for the price. It is thick enough and firm enough to provide cush landings from "highballs" but soft enough for low overhanging roofs. However, even with the huge area, it is always nice to have at least 2 pads while bouldering. Your spotters can move them around easier and you can put them at crucial landing areas rather than just one. Love the carpet for wiping shoes and buckles for quick clips. Also have to love the hybrid hinge. Enough room inside the pad to transport the essentials but not as much as most people like to take on their bouldering adventures. Comfortable backpack straps with waist strap. Good foam that has lasted and should continue to last a long time. Buy it and likely won't need an additional to get out there and crush some boulders! Otherwise, you can buy 2 pads and strap them together while walking in (I find this more useful than just having one pad)

A lot of pad for the price

I fell and it was there to save me...

Easy to carry for the size and awesome surface coverage. In several occasions I have used only this pad as protection.

The only minor ringer of this pad is that fact that it is a tri-fold. To make it flat and sturdy you will need to attach and use all velcros, otherwise you risk of hurting your ankle by getting your foot stuck. It takes valuable effort and time. Nevertheless this is a very minor price to pay for such great pad. In fact, the tri-fold is actually a plus: it makes it easy to carry and in uneven ground, you can leave one of the sides up for a better fit to the terrain.

I love the size of this crash pad. It's pretty large but not too heavy to handle. The padding is durable but soft enough to soften the fall. Easy to clean as well!

      Awesome crash pad!

Super durable and takes falls as good or better than anything else I've ever used. What more can you ask for. For the quality, you really can't beat the price.

      SO SICK!!!

This thing is the perfect size. I feel as though the MAGNUM is far too large to carry around, especially if you have to trek out to a boulder field rather than hop out of the car and get spoiled like in the Yosemite Valley or Bishop areas. It offers the same soft catch as the magnum and is durable as hell.

I appreciate the copious amount of room to store shoes, chalk, etc as well. One of the only pads on the market that can boast this space for sure!
