Dirt on your bag, not your rope.

A good rope bag needs to be durable, simple, and easy to load. The Metolius Dirt Bag II delivers on all the criteria. Ballistic nylon construction is tough enough for dragging the bag around the crag, and the increased capacity provides plenty of space for a 70-meter rope. Plus, the integrated tarp pocket keeps the rope in place for easy loading.

    durability is an issue

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

this thing is OK as a gym bag, I've used it for more than a year. The draw string broke early on. The snap that is supposed to hold the things together so that the thing doesn't unzip when it's on your back doesn't work, and if I don't use a couple of half hitches with the left over arm strap sling to the zipper, it opens while I'm carrying it. Barely fits a 70m and harness and shoes, 70 is (long for the gym, just happens to be my beater rope. Rope tarp itself has ripped out where it attaches to the bag.

    The best bag

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This thing is a great value and has a big tarp and is easy to carry along with a backpack or anything else, strong material and easy put your rope away. I have 2 of them now

Perfect for the Dirtbag in your Life

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Despite hearing some mixed things about this bag, I am a cheapskate at heart, and couldn't pass up the price after my old rope bag died in a tragic "I actually just lost it" accident.

After spending a weekend giving this bag some TLC, I'm super impressed. I had heard that the bag is prone to opening and unzipping spontaneously, I had no problems over a long, adventurous approach hike. The padded shoulder bar is surprisingly comfortable, and the tarp is huge! Much bigger than what I had been used to. It was easy enough to cart around from route to route, and the tarp folds into the chute with ease. The outer fabric feels very sturdy, and the strap stitching is confidence inspiring.

Perhaps my only complaint is this thing is a little bulkier and more spacious than necessary, I'm pretty sure I could fit two ropes in it. Additionally, I wish the closure were a little more secure, the button does seem like it might be more prone to opening spontaneously after some use. But at the price, it's hard to be worried about it.

    Works great and efficient

I have a 70m rope that firsts in the bag no problem. Could probably fit a 80m comfortably as well. The tarp is big and is great for keeping your rope off the ground. It also has a a place to tie off the ends of your rope so they don't get tangled up. Zipper seems solid as does the quality of the rest of the bag. If you are comparing to the old dirt bag the tarp on this one is much bigger and easier to use. I don't think anyone can beat the price and functionality of this rope bag. Great buy.

    Versatile and Easy

I love this bag so much. Super quick if you want to jump over to another crag without making a thing out of it. Also, even with a 70m rope in it. I can fit my harness & shoes in this bag as well! The only thing I liked about the old model more, is the pouch that was built in to the tarp but even without the pouch it's still super easy to stuff your rope away.

    Versatile and Easy

    Really like the simplicity.

Got this bag as a gift. Love the size of the tarp and how easy it is to get the rope inside*. Just flake the rope, tie the ends to the provided loops and fold it in. The outside material is tough and can take a beating. Easy to carry, even if I have a backpack on, I can just sling it over my shoulder and carry it around the front. The only thing I wish it had was an outside pocket to put my wallet, phone and keys. I've thought about sewing one on, but haven't yet. Otherwise, this bag is great and will keep your rope out of the dirt.

    *I have a 9.8 60m rope.

    love the shape

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

basic rope bag but I much prefer this to many other rope bags on the market. The shape of the bag helps keep the profile long and narrow, which I find is easier to stuff under the lid, or on top of a larger pack. Pretty light but material seems very durable. I tossed this off of the top 100+ route and it survived with no damage. Folds up pretty small to put in the followers pack as well. So far so good.

    Great Value for the Price

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I like the design of this bag compared to the other Metolius rope bags. I have a 9.8 70m rope that fits fine in this bag. The only thing that you have to get used to is how to lay the rope out correctly to get it to fit nicely in the bag. A regular flake pile does not like to be packed into the bag, you end up a lump and you don't end up filling the entire length of the bag. A more organized lengthwise flake or coiling the rope seems to get the rope fitting in the bag right. Otherwise, bag material is tough, and the rope tarp is huge! With the shoulder strap design this bag is hard to use while you wearing a backpack already. I prefer using a backpack large enough to fit it in, but some people don't mind wearing a backpack and wearing the rope bag around the neck, just all preference. Buy it! It's a great price for a well constructed bag. Totally worth the money and your rope will appreciate it!

    It works!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Just used it at the gym so far. It does it's job. Easy to get the tarp and rope out and just as easy to wrap it back up. The tarp is a sufficient size as well, compared to the others I've seen. I do wish it had another strap so you could wear it almost as a pack. Hiking up to a crag with this only around one shoulder doesn't seem all to comfy.

I have been using this bag for about 3 months and it serves its function but the tarp is rather small. Aside from the small tarp the bag functions well and it includes a little plastic window on it so you can see which rope you have in the bag. The durability of the bag is also not the best because I noticed on the second used that the threading on the tarp where it connects to the bag is unraveling. I do appreciate the tarp sleeve that keep the rope in place when you go to pack/unpack the bag.
